    Default The 2009 Draft: Safety?

OK, I know Taylor Mays is a physical freak. But playing S isnt ALL about athleticism. You have to be athletic enough but theres also some read & react to it, catching, and tackling which opens the door for some guys to compensate for being slightly less athletic. So then, it looks like next year could be a fairly strong class of safeties. Give us your thoughts on someone you would like Denver to take early or a possible sleeper in the middle rounds.

Off the top, you typically see the following names as the top safeties:

    Taylor Mays
    Myron Rolle
    Patrick Chung
    Kevin Ellison
    William Moore
    Nic Harris

One guy that comes to my mind is Derek Pegues, Miss. St.

I've seen him play a couple of times last year. Good speed, good enough for man coverage. Uses that speed to attack the LOS when playing the run. Physical player, he'll get his nose dirty. Good return man too.

ALL of those safeties are very good prospects.
I would put them in this order.
    1a Taylor mays
    1b William Moore
    2 Myron Rolle
    3a Kevin Ellison
    3b Patrick Chung
    4 Nic harris

Its that close! Of those guys, i want a smart, fast, football player, that can lay the wood, and be a decent coverage guy.
Taylor mays is a excellent coverage guy, but he must show everyone thats hes everything else to warrant a high pick.
Moore is the most accomplished of them all. As of right now, Mays just has physical measurables on him. hes smart, tough, and a INT machine! If he plays to his ability this year, he could be the 1st safety taken.
Myron Rolle also has measurables and some phyical issues to put to rest, but hes a very talented player. A huge safety as well!
Ellison is just plain EVIL! (Thats his nickname by the way)
A very smart, hard hitting safety, that is always in position to make the play.
Many consider him to be better than Mays right now! ( I am one of them, but Mays will shine this year)
If i had to choose, it would depend on if Barrett works out, (Big IF) But if he does, i would go after Ellison.
Chung is a very similiar safety to Ellison. Same style, and good in coverage.
Absolutely NO problem taking him. Hes a plug and play guy, and he would be a starter from day one.
Nic Harris is a servicable player. I havent seen much of him, but hes considered a blue collar worker who just has a great motor and is always making plays.
