Gangs of New York is a truly great movie. An all timer. Better than Shawshank Redemption - miles better than that shit bomb of a simpleton film, Million Dollar Baby.

I've never watched it. The dichotomy of reviews keeps me from investing time in it at this point. It's all on your shoulders Hawg.

I love Gangs of New York. I don't know how much is the film itself or just DDL's performance. His portrayal of the Butcher is one of the greatest performances I've ever seen. You can not take your eyes off of him and every scene he's not in is just filler while you wait for another Butcher scene.

The Dark Knight is like that for me as well. I love that movie but mostly I just love the Joker scenes. If someone cut that movie into just the time that the joker is on screen I think I'd choose to watch that instead of the entire movie.

It's a well-made movie. DDL is great as always. Other than that? It's pretty unspectacular. It's fine. Scorsese has done much better.
Pretty much this, but I wouldn't say Scorsese has done *much* better. DDL is a 15/10. Maybe higher, or needs a different number system. He's acting and everyone else is reading lines, he's on another level. The costumes and atmosphere, also exquisite. The rest of the movie 8/10, averages out to 9/10 or a bit higher. Maybe like 9.3 or something. Leo was his usual excellent self but he's not DDL.

    Great movie.

    Great movie.
Your opinion of DDL is how I feel about Tom Hardy. DDL is a fine actor.

This is a review of GONY that I agree with:

All of this is a triumph for Scorsese, and yet I do not think this film is in the first rank of his masterpieces. It is very good but not great. I wrote recently of "Goodfellas" that "the film has the headlong momentum of a storyteller who knows he has a good one to share." I didn't feel that here. Scorsese's films usually leap joyfully onto the screen, the work of a master in command of his craft. Here there seems more struggle, more weight to overcome, more darkness. It is a story that Scorsese has filmed without entirely internalizing. The gangsters in his earlier films are motivated by greed, ego and power; they like nice cars, shoes, suits, dinners, women. They murder as a cost of doing business. The characters in "Gangs of New York" kill because they like to and want to. They are bloodthirsty, and motivated by hate. I think Scorsese liked the heroes of "Goodfellas," "Casino" and "Mean Streets," but I'm not sure he likes this crowd.
    It's a solid movie.

For good measure, better Scorsese movies than GONY:

    -Taxi Driver
    -Raging Bull
    -The King of Comedy
    -After Hours
    -Goodfellas
    -The Aviator
-The Departed (though this one is in the overrated category along with GONY and Shawshank)
    -Wolf of Wall Street

Pretty spot on with my opinion of the movie as well. If it wasn't for Daniel Day Lewis and his performance, this would have been a footnote Scorcese flick like Cape Fear. Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Casino are my personal favorites of his. I'd put Gangs of New York in the Aviator/Departed category of good but not great Scorcese. I think his most underrated movie was Shutter Island, I did not expect to like that film as much as I did.

Question for those that have seen "It"--will my wife like it? She's not into gore, but enjoys supernatural stuff like The Ring, etc.

I haven't seen it but if it stays close to the source material (which it sounds like it does), "IT" should be a good choice for her. It's not gory as far as graphic violence, and is more about psychological terror. More Stranger Things than Texas Chainsaw Massacre if that is what you are asking.
