    Snowden

    6/10

Cmon Oliver. Stretch the truth some. Throw some lies in the movie so I’m at least entertained.

Captive is pretty good (Netflix). I will give it a 7 of 10. Ryan Reynolds is good in it. he's very good looking

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - 7/10

You've gotta suspend disbelief a bit to stick with the storyline and some of the characters, but I enjoyed it. It's kind of like Crash meets Hell or High Water.

I have this dvrd and have been meaning to watch it.

I decided to rewatch Fury instead. It was better the first time.

Yeah I liked Fury but I think part of what makes it good is the suspense/unknown. Three Billboards is a good tale about the duality of man.

    The Meg - 7.5/10

There are three types of shark movies:

    1. Jaws: focused on the human condition and just happened to have a shark as the antagonist
    2. Deep Blue Sea: Uses sharks as a plot device with a thinly veiled morality play about man vs nature
    3. Sharknado: "LOL. Sharks in a tornado!" - some executive snorting cocaine

The Meg gleefully rides the line between 1 and 2, taking a ridiculous premise and treating it with a seriousness that makes it feel like it could have came from the creature feature heyday of the 1950s and 60s. Unlike Sharknado which was ridiculous for ridiculous sake, this movie is made with an earnest nature that is both a blessing and curse.

There is some junk science, some good action set pieces, and some telegraphed moments but it all just is such a spectacle that it is easy to enjoy the ride. My personal favorite sequence was the initial tagging and hunt of the beast that leads to a twist that had me look at my son while we both just started laughing because of how we should have saw it coming but didn't.

There are some slow parts, but the buildup to the final showdown feels deserved and has a satisfying conclusion. I first read The Meg novel over 20 years ago so this movie was a long time coming for me since when I first heard about the possibility of it becoming a movie. A harmless good time at the cinema that is neither a Superhero flick nor starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson so it has that going for it by default!

    No/Vem/ber- 10/10

Interesting movie, a little bit of folklore a little bit of grim fairy tale but wrapped up in a twisted sense of humor and cool aesthetic. Think Eraserhead mashed with a little bit of The VVitch thrown in and this is what you have shot in black and white. This was a pleasant surprise for me this year.

    Summer of 84

    7/10

80s vibe, clearly playing on the success of Stranger Things, imo. Didn’t expect it to get as dark as it did at the end. Good flick.
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.
