Star Wars: A New Hope.
9.5 out of 10. Just a lot of fun. Simple story that engages you. Vibrant world settings that you want to engage with more. Powerful villains that always feel like credible threats. A lovable cast of scamps and scoundrels as the good guys.
This was made when there was a reason to be optimistic. When we all had a chance.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald: 6/10 - My son who is a huge Harry Potter fan really enjoyed this, probably because of one extended sequence in an older location, but most of this movie had a hard time justifying itself. The biggest "Crimes" in this movie is that that characters insist on telling you the story instead of just showing it. Still there is enough here for fans to keep them engaged, the rest of us will just have a hard time keeping up with the story like me.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs: 9/10 Entertaining but sometimes uneven Western anthology from the legendary Cohen brothers. My favorite is the darkly comic opening salvo of the titular Buster Scruggs going from Saloon to Saloon dispensing singing cowboy justice. Nice little gem of a movie you can watch on Netflix right now!
