The Furies (Shudder app)- 9/10
Interesting slasher flick despite traveling down some familiar paths. However, there are still enough twists and turns to satisfy any horror fan and it doesnt shy away from some pretty gruesome death scenes. .
Spiderman: Far From Home- 9/10
Okay I havent been to a movie in the theater more than once since Star Wars the Force Awakens, and I've probably seen less that 5 movies multiple times in the theater, but the wife wanted to see Joker so I took her.
It's even better the second time. I really really really love that movie.
My two favorite movies this year easily were that and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. And for similar reasons, surprisingly. When you can get a slow-burn movie that is both engaging and entertaining its a rare treat. Both of those are easy purchases for me when they come out.
Hey, ok, so Joker. It's close enough to 10/10 that I'll round up. If my wife was to see it, the Grey's Anatomy fan that she is, she would probably give it a 5/10 on account of going off the reservation in terms of archetypal storytelling. It's an anti-hero story with an unconventional narrative progression--that's not for everyone.
What I really liked:
I laughed hard at parts of the movie when no one else in the theater was laughing at all, and I felt a bit like Mr. Fleck--the absurdity mixed with tragi-comedy was so strong that involuntary eruption of laughter(?) felt the only adequate expression.
I can't recall a movie ever doing that for me. Perhaps in fits and starts, but not so persistently. The producers and directors and so forth maintained a certain tonal quality that resonated through the acting, cinematics, plot, so forth.
Very thinky movie. Little eddies and swirls like micro-morality plays and statements about the human condition.
I might see it again in the theater, not sure. I feel like the movie was uneven enough--too 'challenging'; fibrous; stupidly human--that 10/10 is unmerited, but the unique amazements merit the high praise.
El Camino - 9/10
Great movie, everything breaking bad related is just gold
Alien - ??/10, never seen in theater
sisMad Max - Fury Road thing with Hardy.
Seven and a half out of ten. It was enjoyable, and pretty good. But it did not live up to the hype around it, and that diminished the experience because I thought it would. Or, I hoped it would. All the flasbacks or PTSD trauma, or whatever the **** they were trying to show Max, meant nothing to me because it was so loose. On one hand, that could be a strength. I just was like 'oh wow he feels bad because he failed people' and it meant so little. Outside of that it was a simple chase movie, which was its strength. Visually captivating, basic, but solid. I might be a little harsh on this now, and I will revisit it later.
Fury Road was less about Max and more about Furiosa.
I thought it was going to be about Mad Max. Because it's in the title, and I'm not very smart.
Oh, this did remind me though - I did like the big bad. He felt like he was an actual big bad and it was nice to have a villain who was both imposing, violent, intelligent, and understandable.
