Casablanca.
I think I'm too stupid to understand this movie.
I watched this with the highest of expectations as somebody who loves black and white foreign films and mundane "day in the life" movies.
It's beautiful to look at always. Pretty much flawless when it comes to visuals.
It is a slice of life movie meant to portray several months in the life of indigenous maid Cleo.
It does a great job of making you feel like how I imagine it felt in 1970s Mexico.
What keeps it from being a great movie for me is that I felt pretty much emotionally detached for most of it. It seemed as though the beautiful wide shots were more concerned with portraying 1970s Mexico than portraying the depth of the characters - which may be a product of watching it via netflix rather than on the big screen. Other than a couple of obviously emotionally significant scenes, I was disconnected from the movie. Which is fine. Not all movies have to be emotionally resonant, but that's how I gauge if a movie is a favorite or not. The main actress did a perfect understated job. I loved her and feel the style of the shots did not allow me to connect with her as much as I wanted to. It was almost voyeuristic in a bad way.
It is good. Gorgeous. Worth watching. But for me, it falls short of being a great movie. I'd still give it a 4/5, but it's not going on my all-time favorites list.
