I’m trying to figure out how to process this. It’s the current critics’ darling. It’s on Netflix, and was also released theatrically. It’s in black and white and Spanish with subtitles. It’s stunning and mundane at the same time. It explores the upper middle class clash with poverty and servitude in early-1970s Mexico, which is the setting that Director Alfonso Cuarón (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Prisoner of Azkaban, Children of Men, Gravity) grew up in. It also explores family, loss and grief. And relationships.

Yet, it took me two sittings. It is black and white. It does have subtitles.

    I’m going to give it a 9.

This is exactly the type of movie I’d like to get feedback from Buff and NTL.
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.

WWI was an absolute nightmare of a bloodbath.

Some of my favorite history books in my collection are about WWI. The craziest stories were always about how widespread cavalries still were and just the total carnage those types of charges into war would create. That war was spanning the old world and the industrial revolution so it was such a strange mix of old battle tactics and new war machines. Fascinating and horrifying at the same time.

When I went to Mardi Gras a few years ago there was a giant dude dressed up like Shonuff. He stayed in character the entire time to the point where I thought I was going to have start glowing in order to fight him.

*Not the guy I saw obviously, but the real actor may he rest in peace.

Shaun of the Dead is a masterpiece. Love that movie.

The bar scene where they are beating the owner with cue sticks in time to don't stop me now and the scene where they are beatboxing with the zombie prior to the outbreak being well known are both awesome scenes.

Just saw this Monday, 10/10. One of the things that amazed me was the almost complete lack of complaints from the vets who actually served. Some even said they enjoyed their time (?!)

I think this speaks to a couple of things. 1) Life in general was a crap-ton harder for everyone in 1914 than it is now, and especially the working class. It was noted that the average British recruit gained a stone (@14lbs) and an inch in height during training. Remarkable. When I went through basic back in the 80's the emphasis was on getting weight off the fatbodies who showed up at the reception center. The dentistry of 1914-18 looks pretty awful, too. Most of the guys have noticably horrible teeth

I was a stoner when I joined. I gained 20 pounds in 8 weeks of basic.
