Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 7.5/10
I consider the first GOTG one of my favorite comic book movies ever, so maybe my expectations felt a little high going in. I went with a group of 6 who are all HUGE Marvel fans (one of which sees each Marvel movie at least twice on principle) and the consensus seemed to be that the first was better. Not to say this is a bad movie, it just didn't quite hit the heights of the first movie as consistently.
There is a LOT going on in this movie. And I mean that both from a story and visual standpoint. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that this movie was 90% green screen and sometimes it works better than others. If the first movie was about friendship, this one was about family. When Peter reunites with his estranged father (played by Kurt Russell) he finally begins to understand his place in the universe. But is everything as it seems?
When this movie hits on all cylinders there is nothing like it. The opening sequence alone is almost worth the price of admission. Drax and Rocket once again steal the show, and much to my relief the overly cute "Baby Groot" is used sparingly and to great effect. My main problems with this entry are pacing and tone. Just when things start to get fun, things come to a screeching halt to explain the (in my opinion) overly complex plot. I think the first movie worked so well because it focused on the characters and how they came together with a singular goal. Here everyone seems to have their own side-story and the one that interests you may not be the one they decide to linger on. While the first movie was effortless and self aware, this one tends to get heavy handed with drama OR comedy at really weird times because it feels like it "should" happen there if that makes sense.
All in all I wouldn't put this up there with Winter Soldier, The Avengers, or the Original Guardians of the Galaxy but it is still a good example of what Marvel does even when they don't hit all the high notes. Enjoyable, aesthetically pleasing, but maybe taking itself a little too seriously at times this is still a good, but not great movie.
