Logan was an outstanding movie. I am glad Shake convinced me to see it.

    The new triple x movie.

    0/10

A truly awful and obvious story with horrific acting.

It made me want to smoke crack

    Kong: Skull Island 7/10

MUCH better than the bloated love letter by Peter Jackson from 2005, but still feels like a relic of when the world seemed like a bigger place and there were things we hadn't discovered yet.

The setting is great. The movie starts in the South Pacific near the end of WWII and picks up at the end of the Vietnam War. Scientist convince a Senator to let them explore a new island that has been spotted with satellite imagery and they need a military escort because they know there is probably something bad there. As the troops are being sent home from Vietnam, a small group is called in for the escort mission (led by the always great Samuel L. Jackson) for one last mission before headed back to the states.

Of course once they reach Skull Island all hell breaks loose. They meet a stranded American who has been there for awhile (John C. Reilly who is really the highlight of the movie) and we are taken through all the big monster movie tropes as they try to get off the island. There is no damsel in distress, no New York City skyscraper climbing, just a lost world full of giant monsters on an island and Kong is definitely king there.

This is part of the same universe as the last Godzilla movie a few years back and the big M.U.T.O is even referenced once. I'm sure the next step is to get those two in a movie to face off against or with one another.

Fun popcorn flick and a good matineee with some awe inspiring visuals. I liked the Vietnam era setting and the music, but ultimately this will be one of those "Oh yeah, that came out" movies when I think back at the end of the year at everything I've seen.

Yeah I won't go out of my way to get people to see Star Wars or something if they aren't already fans, but if you like the character of Wolverine/Logan that movie is a masterpiece. I still think it is the best Western-style movie I've seen in years. At it's heart it's a cowboy flick.

It was fine, I just think he was too much in love with the original and the movie tried too hard. He was more passionate about the source material than I was and I was just bored by the exposition. I thought it was beautifully shot, but ultimately dull. The last third almost made up for it though. Kong Skull Island is a different beast altogether. More in line with the Lost Island/Forgotten World movies of the mid 20th Century.
