I think it all depends on what they are looking for in such films. I think Inception is a superior movie but its also a bit weird and hard to follow at times if you stop paying attention. Kings Speech is pretty straight forward and has some exceptional acting which is why i have no problem with it winning. I love pretty much everything that Geoffrey Rush does.
I finally watched The Babadook. 10/10 but will probably never watch it again. This movie hit me on an emotional level which sounds silly and I sorta feel silly to type it, but it did.
I recognized the symbolism in this movie almost immediately. "If it's in a word. Or it's in a look. You can't get rid of the Babadook." This film is about grief and how it can destroy you if you let it. It is disguised as a monster movie but this movie is all about love and loss. I'd love to hear other's feedback if anyone has watched it.

Ive seen it but for me it was a pretty forgettable movie. But, perhaps thats because i went into it looking for horror and didnt get the same out of it like you did.
The woman who wrote and directed Babadook also made a movie called The Nightingale. That movie is also amazing. It is brutal and can be disturbing at times. It's definitely worth watching.

Have you ever seen The Iron Rose (1973)?
I would be curious to see what your take is on that. I personally love it but if you like films that are not straight up horror and have underlining themes than you should give this a gander. Its a very slow burn so be warned and if i recall its sub-titled. But, because it runs at a slow pace you wont get lost in the sub-titles of trying to keep up. But the atmosphere created is brilliant and the lead actress Francoise Pascal who is drop dead gorgeous and easy on the eyes (yes she gets naked) is worth the price of admission alone.
So for fun i went back in the list of nominees back to 2000 to see what picture i would have voted for. Only twice did i agree with the final result based on the films nominated and 3 times i didnt like any of the nominees. Granted, in some of the cases i have not seen all the films listed so that also plays a part. Here is what i came up with though in terms of what i would have liked to see in terms of winners.
