The Irishman ★★★★1/2☆
Excellent masterclass in long form storytelling by Scorcese. I thought the de-aging effects for the most part were effective, and using special effects to recreate early and mid-century America was done very well and added to the overall character of the story. Once Pacino's Hoffa entered the story I went from really liking to absolutely loving this movie. I think it helped to watch this movie in two parts (there are some nice natural stopping points about halfway through) and is the first movie to really do as well with taking its time setting up a world, characters, and story as well as something like Breaking Bad or other top tier dramas.
I always thought it would be hard for a film to compete with television dramas that were able to draw out over a few episodes or a season, but the length of this movie is important because it gives everything time to breathe and marinate like those shows do.
The end result is an engaging capstone thesis from one of the best mafia storytellers of all time with some nice historical recounts, beautiful violence, and the sense of regret and power that comes with it all. An easy recommendation for fans of the genre, with a few caveats like splitting it up over a few sessions to really enjoy it.
I love this tweet about someone who watched it with their dad who is closer to the generation depicted in the film:
Uh-oh. Bad Takes McGee is here.
