Well im watching Summer league and i loved what i saw from Thad, He dropped 27 points. Loved how our rookie C/PF looked dropping 22 points and 13 rebounds.

Sixers Fall in Summer League Opener

Las Vegas, July 11 - The 2008 NBA Summer League Presented by EA SPORTS tipped off on Friday, July 11 with the Golden State Warriors hosting the Philadelphia 76ers at COX Pavilion on the campus of UNLV.

The Warriors earned the 96-89 victory in a game that saw 11 lead changes and 11 ties. Anthony Randolph, the 14th overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, led all scorers with 30 points while Thaddeus Young chipped in 27 points for the Sixers.

"I had a lot of fun, "Randolph said of his first game in a Warriors uniform. "My coaches told me to come out and be aggressive and let the game come to me and that’s what I did. This is a dream come true for me I am having fun and I am enjoying myself."

The Warriors held a 24-18 lead at the end of the first quarter and were up at by two at the half. The Sixers came out strong in the second half earning a seven point game early in the third however it was the Warriors that earned the two-point lead heading into the fourth.

The Sixers kept the game close until midway through the fourth quarter when the Warriors opened up a 11-point lead and never looked back.

"I thought it was a typical summer league game," said John Loyer, Head Coach of the Sixers. "I thought both teams competed for 40 minutes. We like some of the things our young guys did; we’re just looking to get better."

Also of note were rookie Marreese Speights’ 22 points and 13 rebounds in his professional debut. The Sixers will continue their Summer League schedule on Saturday at 5 pm against Denver.

The game marked the first of a nine-day, 53-game schedule for the summer league.

Its looking like Speights should have went top 5 more and more to me. Jason smith is dominating also. We have talente bigs for days. Was a fantastic game the other night vs Toronto with a last minute lay up by Gordon i believe. Who i like but have to see if he can shoot consistantly. Carroll appears to be a shooter that we could use but hes shy and does not take many shots. Young gets to the rim at will. Had a bad game last game but hit the game tie shot for us in a pressure moment.

    Speights plays with confidence
The Sixers rookie was averaging a double-double in the summer league.
    By Kate Fagan

    Inquirer Staff Writer

LAS VEGAS - Shortly before his summer league game, Marreese Speights hurried from a concession stand with popcorn in one hand and a crumpled wad of dollar bills in the other.
He spotted 76ers coach Maurice Cheeks.

"Coach Cheeks!" Speights called. "Your popcorn," he said, giving the contents of each hand to his new coach.

"Look at this little thing," Cheeks said of the popcorn. "You're going to have to go back at halftime."

The newest Sixer shrugged - unsure of Cheeks' seriousness - then went out and scored 26 points in Wednesday night's NBA Summer League victory over the Washington Wizards at Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

After the game, Speights said he has "adjusted to this level real fast."

"I'm coming out there with a lot of confidence," he said. "This is the best I've played."

The Sixers played their final game of the summer league last night against the Toronto Raptors. Speights averaged 19.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game in the first four contests.

The 76ers drafted the 6-foot-10 Speights, a forward-center from Florida, with the 16th overall selection in the 2008 NBA draft.

Speights, who presumably will play behind center Samuel Dalembert and newly acquired all-star power forward Elton Brand, adds depth to what is shaping up to be a formidable frontcourt of Thaddeus Young, Brand, Speights, Dalembert and Jason Smith.

"He's a skilled kid," Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski said of Speights. "There's a definite upside for this guy.

"We thought his strengths were on the offensive end. We thought his weakness would be defensively, learning the pace of the game because the defensive end moves faster."

Speights said that has not been a problem.

"I think that college was faster than this, but this is summer league," Speights said. "I don't know about the actual league."

"He's not tentative at all," Smith said. "He's been aggressive and played really well. He'll be just fine."

The best indicator of future behavior is past behavior. I know ya wanna be positive about a dude on your team, but just cuz he says he won't be lazy, doesn't necessarily make it so. More power to em if he gets it together, but if yer lazy in a 30-40 game season on a squad like Florida, what would make him come to play every night in an 82 game marathon for an NBA team?

I don't usually like to judge someone after seeing just one interview of them...but he doesn't strike me as the sharpest tool in the shed or a guy that I would really want on my team.

The sharpest tool? This is basketball nobody is asking him to go teach calculas at the University of Harvard....I get it though because a guy can slip to 16 and Philly is an upcoming team guys want to Nit pick at my boy. Does not matter though because everything you all are saying is bullshit untill proven otherwise. As far as right now goes? He is dominating and playing with heart on offense and defense. Hes the one playing with the most emotion. Imagine an NBA GM saying they dont want great talent because he cant trach calculas in college or something. Lol. You dudes just keep hoping for the worst while watching him at his best.
