    Around the League 6/14/2008

I’m going to try to do this every Saturday (or maybe Friday) during the NFL season, and every now and then during the offseason. I’m a big fan of baseball, as most of you know, and one of my favorite blogs to read is Buster Olney’s on ESPN. He takes a quick snap shot around the league, and links to various newspapers and television stations so that you can read what the local writers and reporters are saying. It’s a quick, easy reference point for people to see what’s going on around the league. As a side note, I’ll always hit the AFC West teams a little more than other teams around the league,.

    So, without any further ado…

The big news around the league, is of course, the indefinite suspension of embattled Cincinnati Wide Receiver Chris Henry. Henry’s brushes with the law are well-documented, and there’s not use going over them again here. Here you can read the AP story, via the Cincinnati Enquirer, but meanwhile, Cincinnati is on the field and new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is looking for a “new direction” for his defense, which has struggled in past seasons. WCPO has video footage of Chad Johnson practicing.. Yes, we talking about practice.

Columnist Tom Sullivan at signonsandiego discusses newly acquired Jeremy Newberry’s meanstreak.

Former Raiders coach John Rauch passed away on Tuesday, and sfgate.com eulogizes him here. Sfgate also reports that the Raiders have signed Linebacker Grant Irons. Nnamdi Asomugha has still yet to sign his $9.8 million offer sheet after he was franchised by the team.

Kansas City Star beat reporter Adam Teicher gives his video blog after the week of Chiefs mini-camp. And, as we all know, the Chiefs are trying to find a way to cope with the loss of Jared Allen in the offseason trade.

Mark Gaughan, of The Buffalo News has begun a series of stories that addresses the Bills’ financial situation. Former Buffalo Bill Mitch Frerotte passed away this week. And the Marshawn Lynch hit and run investigation continues.

Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald reports that Tony Sparano's offseason conditioning program isn’t a walk in the park, and Ronnie Brown is back, practicing at full speed. Armando Salguero writes an “I told you so,” blog on former Dolphin Marcus Vick, who’s in trouble with the law again.

Vaughn McClure, of the Chicago Tribune, reports that Tommie Harris thinks long-time friend and free agent Kevin Jones can help the Bears with their running back situation. Mike Mulligan of the Sun-Times tells us that Benson is the biggest bust in Bears history, as he cleared waivers on Friday.

The 49ers feel very confident in DeShaun Foster as their No. 2 back behind Frank Gore.

The Seattle Times Seahawks Blog breaks down the Seahawks depth chart after mini camps ended. Mike Holmgren lit into the team at the end of the final mini-camp practice, and the Post-Intelligencer’s blog reports that a German player will go to camp with the Seahawks.

Mr. Irrelevant may have a shot at making it on the Rams squad this season. STLToday.com blogger Jeff Gordon reports that the signing of Brad Gradkowski will bolster the team’s quarterback situation.

The Texans Tim Bulman talks with the Chronicle’s Anna-Megan (Wannabe Diva?) about the NBA Finals and his hometown Celtics.. The Texans also let several players go after mini-camp ended. Mario Williams looks to continue the impressive learning curve he experienced from year one to year two.

The Titans see another player in trouble with the law. Paul Kuharsky is leaving the Tennessean, and his beat job which he has held for the Titans entire time in Tennessee, for ESPN.com.

The Jaguars, as most other teams, finished up mini-camps this week, and a somewhat uneventful offseason is now leading to a lot of anticipation in Jacksonville.

Colts Insider answers the mailbag, and comments on Marvin Harrison’s run-in with the police this offseason. And, it didn’t take long, and it didn’t take much for the Indiana Hall of Fame to jump on the Colts’ bandwagon.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel set out to prove that there are a lot of other issues with the Packers other than the retirement of “he who should not be named.”

Personal favorite Jordan Dizon thinks he fits in well in Detroit. They also reminded me of why I loved to watch him play at CU.

The Star Tribune in Minnesota decided to just go ahead and ask the Vikings if LeCharles Bentley might be a Viking, and Brad Childress thinks this is his best Vikings team.

Kurt Warner is still messing with the Cardinal’s Leinart era, even though the Cardinals say Leinart is working hard.

The Times-Picayune (the greatest name for a newspaper ever) reports that Will Smith has signed a long-term contract with the Saints.

Chris Simms is apparently an afterthought with the Bucs now. The Bucs also hosted Cheerleader tryouts, which the Tampa Tribune faithfully reported on.
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.
