    NFL Practice squad players are free agents and can be signed to any team's 53-man roster at any time during the season.

    I had always assumed a team could protect their PS player if a team claimed him by placing him on the 53 man roster but that's not the case.

    Technically true, but the team who the player is on the PS with can match any offer and retain them.
