Since angels aren't real I would say the answer is either 0 or infinity.

The question is a rhetorical one intended to highlight the absurdity of philosophizing about issues that would make zero difference in our daily lives if we knew the answer one way or another.

In Medieval Europe theologians debated the question as their cities were being sacked.

actually it will have a giant effect on humanity, considering dark energy.

And now that people are seeing computer code in equations that define the universe.

If we discover such a key to this code, we could literally define the universe as we see fit, dare i say, being able to control and shift matter or our physical makeup, genetics, disease, list goes on.

I don't think I have enough weed for this kind of a discussion.

I agree to an extent, but this is more theoretical than philosophical. Just over a century ago Quantum Mechanics was just a theory and now it is the basis of all of our technology from Super Computers to Cell Phones. These type of discussions could be world changing.

Isn't this an absurdly hypocritical POV coming from a man of faith? How is this any different than you seeking to know more about your creator, or having a relationship with god? It feels like the same exercise to me.

I don't think so at all. There is a difference in philosophizing about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, vs. how I should treat my fellow man, or how I should approach my life with my soul at stake.

I understand your criticism as someone who thinks my Faith in God absurd.

However, my Faith ideally impacts decisions I make every day and how I conduct myself continually. Worrying about how many angels can theoretically dance on a pinpoint does not.

Right - but I'm not referring to the angels statement literally - I'm referring to the implied critique on the OP. You are implying that it's sort of a useless exercise to debate whether we're part of a simulation - but my contention is that these people are merely seeking to understand their creator. Therefore - this is a theological debate and it seems like a dismissive attitude here is the same as someone stumbling into a thread on Christianity and declaring that it's all a silly waste of time.
