Rush is definitely my favorite non metal band. However, I find their last two cd's really wander. Almost like prog rock/jazz. It just goes on and on and the songs all sound the same.Peart's lyrics are still solid but Geddy and Alex have dropped the ball in the music dept. Where their early stuff usually had really good hooks I find their newer stuff sorely lacking in that department.

Some of those are iffy as whether their not metal?
Def Leppard was NWOBHM in late 70's.
    Dokken not metal?
However Motley Crue, Stryper, Ratt are likely closer to hard rock.

I hate defining music genres, there not clear cut like movies comedy, drama.

Nah, at that time as a young teen i definitely thought all the bands like Crue, Dokken, Def leppard, and the like were metal. But as time has passed on and ive experienced a lot heavier bands and have heard the differences it has become clear that those bands I listed are more Hard Rock than metal. The only more well known bands during that era that eclipsed the hard rock mantra were Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.

Those bands can definitely be consider "Glam Metal"
I don't know about you but Dokken's "Mr Scary" or "Tooth N Nail" sound closer to metal than some of Judas Priest's songs like " Livin' After Midnight" or "Another Thing Comin'"

Certainly at certain spots in those bands careers it could be deemed metal. Tooth n Nail and Shout at the Devil were those bands heaviest moments no doubt. But overall i just cant find myself to really include them as metal bands.

What about bands like Saxon or Diamond Head?
Could you explain to me the difference between Black and Death Metal. I can't tell by listening.

When it comes to Death and Black the most obvious comparison boils down to vocals and lyrical content. Death Metal spends most times with deeper vocal growls while Black Metal is more screechy or higher pitched vocals. Lyrically DM concentrates on horror, personal, and political themes whereas BM deals with anti-christian, paganism, and national socialism themes. As for Saxon and DH i would consider those metal bands.
