April 22, 2010 - Since its launch in November 2005, Microsoft has sold over 40 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide, the company confirmed to IGN this afternoon.

Microsoft earlier today released its third-quarter financial sales results, which saw its Xbox division generate $1.67 billion in revenue, a 2% increase compared to the same quarter the prior year. During the third quarter (January-March), Microsoft sold 1.5 million Xbox 360 consoles worldwide, a 12% decrease from the holiday quarter.

Microsoft hopes to increase sales momentum this holiday when it ships Project Natal, the motion camera add-on for Xbox 360. Heavy rumors suggest Microsoft may soon be introducing a new slim model of the console, possibly even revealing it at this year's E3 event in June.
