    Yup.

Look, theres a reason why smart GMs and coaches draft players that fit their schemes and youre looking at one.

Who do you think Royal is......Jerry Rice?

    The guy.....DISAPPEARED.

If you have the wrong player in the wrong scheme, you arent going to get the same production you would as if they were in the right scheme, one that fits what they do best.

It may simply be a matter of Royal not being able to read the same thing that Orton does at the LOS.

Theres two possibilities here in my mind.

1.Royal could have a better year this year.

    2.Royal could tank it again.

    Lets look at those.

If Royal breaks out this year.....again......then we'll be fine. But when was the last time you saw a good receiver have a 37 catch season, with no touchdowns, after a 90 catch season, then went on to be consistently productive? Think about it. If you can find one, let me know.

If Royal has a bad year again, its over. We get nothing in return for him that we could this year.
Right now, I guarantee you that Shanahan thinks Royals bad year was due to the change in scheme. Shanahan is looking at Royal as a 90 catch receiver.
With his ego......with EVERY head coaches ego.........he is going to think that Royal in his hands is a player to be feared.

Will Shanahan give up his second for Royal. I doubt it cause its a high second. If he does, we score.

Outside of that, Hillis and Scheff provide us nothing we want. Scheff cause of his attitude, Hillis cause Josh aint playin him. If these guys will gain us their second rounder.....at number 4.....I can think of a TON of players we could use in this deep draft. Theres going to be some very good talent at 4 in round 2 imo.

I dont believe good receivers have 37 catch seasons with no TDs.

If we can get their second rounder, its the safest play. Id take it in a heartbeat.

Royal is a fine player. How many bad WRs have 90 catch seasons? This is another case of "a bird in the bush is better than the bird in the hand" syndrome. We think we can simply replace good talent with draft choices, and everything works out fine.

I would say there is absolutely no reason for Shanahan no to think of Royal as a 90 catch type of WR. But there is no reason to give up a 2nd for him. If he doesn't fit McD's scheme, then why would they need to get a 2nd for him for compensation? If he doesn't fit, he doesn't fit. I'm still trying to understand this 'system' that is better off with lesser quality players... whether that be at QB or at WR. Seems everyone is telling me that this system is so superior, that it doesn't need the talent like the rest of the NFL does. So lets just drop the best talent we have, for more draft picks.

You're putting it all on Royal and forgetting who quarterbacking this team. It's not like we have a top five quarterback in our backfield. If you can't give that consideration then I don't think you have a very good argument.

Right, I also know that Royal put up 91 catches and nearly 1000 yards just year earlier all the while his counterpart put nearly identical numbers to this past. You're apparently forgetting that Marshall was targeted over 800 times the past season so what's your point?

it took rod smith 5 years to break 90 catches and he turned out "pretty good"
i think the transition to the new system and the "sophmore slump" had alot to do with his down year.
also i remember mcD saying he plans on getting royal more involved in the O next season.

    800 times ?
what i am saying is orton's #s were not far off the mark set the year before so "somebody" was catching the balls he threw.
gaffney obviously took up some of the slack ,so to say that royals #s were down because we had orton in the game is not a reasonable arguement either.
playcalling had more to do with it than who was behind center.

I don't know how I got 800 times nevertheless I think actually was over 180 times.

Using the playing call as an excuse doens't hold water either, certainly not in every instance. Considering that it's spread offense you have more than one read on every pass play.

If he was so good, why did Marshall still excel while playing two games less than other years,(total with last game and time lost at beginning of season) and Gaffney line up at number 2?
