Its crazy to think we are ONLY 10 back in the standings. Had we had any kind of winning over the past 2 weeks, we could be within maybe 5.

Anyway, back in like 78 or something the Yankess were 14 games out in the middle of July ( or maybe June ) and forced a playoffs to get in the playoffs.

So its not out of the question. Bring back Holliday, Tulo, and Hawpe and we have a deep roster.

    D-backs drop finale in Milwaukee
Owings struggles; offense musters just one run in loss
    By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com

MILWAUKEE -- This certainly wasn't the way the D-backs wanted to start off their three-city, 10-game road trip.

Arizona was steamrolled by Milwaukee, 10-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Miller Park, as the Brewers completed a three-game sweep.

The road has been an unkind place for the D-backs of late, as they have dropped 11 of their past 13 away from Chase Field.

"You've just got to keep moving on, keep grinding, keep playing," D-backs manager Bob Melvin said. "That's all we can do. It's not our best period right now, but the only way to get out of it is to keep playing and keep playing as hard as you can."

Milwaukee looked like it may blow the game open in the first inning, when its first three hitters reached base, but Arizona starter Micah Owings was able to strike out Prince Fielder before right fielder Justin Upton made a nice grab of Corey Hart's ball up against the wall and threw to second base to double up Gabe Kapler.

"[He] just got some balls up and [over the] middle of the plate," Melvin said of Owings. "The first inning was tough in that you look up and he's got 27 pitches and doesn't have an out yet. Justin ends up making a good play and getting him out of the inning, but it just seemed like after that, he struggled in the middle of the plate and the ball was up."

The Brewers made Owings (6-4) pay for every one of those pitches up in the zone in the third, as they collected five straight hits and scored four runs to bust open the 1-1 game.

"I looked at some of the film and felt like I was making pretty good pitches," Owings said. "And they were just able to string some hits together in the third. They got aggressive, and I should have used it to my advantage."

Instead, the Brewers turned the D-backs' aggressiveness against them in the fourth.

With two outs, a run in, and runners at first and third, Upton tried to make a diving play on Hart's liner to right. The ball skipped by him and rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Hart to register a three-run inside-the-park home run.

"It's a ball he's got to go after and try to make a play on," Melvin said. "He just missed it. Not for a lack of effort. That's one he's got to take a chance on. If he catches it, obviously, they don't score a few of those runs."

The D-backs are still in first place in the National League West, but have not played well on a consistent basis since April, especially on the road, and that has led to frustration in the clubhouse.

"It's not like we're not trying," outfielder Chris Young said. "We're out there giving it our all. We just haven't been getting the big hits in the big situations, and that's been giving the momentum to the other team, basically. We had quite a few situations today when we didn't get it done, and I was one of them."

If there's any consolation, it's that the D-backs looked bad against the Brewers in losing three of four here last July before turning their season around not long after that. After dropping the first game of a series with the Cubs last July, they wound up winning 21 of 26, en route to the division crown.

"I know we can get out of it just as quickly as we got into it," Young said. "I know that. It's going to take all of us together, though. We've got to go out there, tighten it up. That's obvious."

Thursday's off-day is the first break the D-backs have had in 16 days. They will need to regroup quickly, because they've got four games against the Pirates and then three more in Shea Stadium before they return home.

"We've got some games left to play, and it's not something we can drag our heads about, because we're beating ourselves right now," Owings said.

I was surprised on how bad the DiamondBacks looked....eh, but that's baseball. We might be in the dumps and get swept by them when we go there.

100 or so games left. Just need to gain 1 game in the standings for every 10 games played. Simple

DENVER -- Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba received a three-game suspension and the Dodgers' Matt Kemp was suspended for four games for their altercation during the eighth inning of Tuesday night's 3-0 Rockies victory at Dodger Stadium.
Both players also received undisclosed fines. Unless the players appeal, Kemp's suspension will begin with the Dodgers' game Thursday night against the Cubs, and Torrealba's will begin Friday, when the Rockies return to action against the Brewers at Coors Field.

With one out and Kemp batting, a third strike eluded Torrealba and the ball rolled toward the first-base line. Kemp walked along the line and blocked Torealba's path to the ball. Torrealba moved Kemp out of the way to pick up the ball and make the necessary tag. Kemp pushed Torrealba, who pushed back before a wrestling match ensued and the benches cleared.

THIS IS JUST RIDICULOUS - What did they expect Torre to do - just stand there and take Kemp's crap??????

Sorry, but I don't really think its crap at all. They got into an altercation. They both got suspended. Kemp for more, because he was more of the instigator.

Did you see what happened? And Kemp definitely was the instigator, and ends up with 1 more game suspension than Torre. I figured something would happen to Torre, like maybe a 1 game suspension and a fine.

Well it happens, 3 games of rest for Yorvit, have to expect some type of suspension when you clear the benches.

Tracy Ringolsby takes a look at the Rockies first-day selections. The draft was halted after six rounds Thursday. The final 44 rounds iwll be held Friday. Scouting reports are from Baseball America.

    2nd ROUND
OF Charles Blackmon Georgia Tech L-L 6-3 201

A pitcher out of high school and at Young Harris Junior College, Blackmon was a 28th-round draft choice of Florida in 2004 and Boston in 2005. Redshirted at George Tech a year ago, and made conversion to the outfield in the Texas Collegiate League last summer. Hit leadoff and in first year as a position player led Georgia Tech with a .396 average, 99 hits, 68 runs scored and 25 stolen bases.

Blackmon has five tools that are quickly gaining refinement. He runs well and could play any of the three outfield positions but probably fits best in left. Has a natural left-handed swing and makes consistent contact. While his approach is still raw, he projects to hit for power and average. He's a fourth-year junior but a young hitter, so he has plenty of room for improvement. He is one of the biggest sleepers in this year's draft.

    3rd ROUND
RHP Aaron Weatherford Mississippi State R-R 6-0 187

Undrafted out of high school, Weatherford was primarily a reliever at Missisissippi State. He appeared in 18 games this season, going 3-1 with a 0.85 ERA and seven saves. Missed the month of March with tendinitis. Dominated hitters, allowing only 20 base runners -- 10 hits and 10 walks -- while striking out 62 in 31 2/3 innings.

Fastball reads between 92-94 mph and comes from a high, over-the-top, arm slot. He throws downhill and commands it to both sides of the plate. He also throws a hard curveball and split-finger with late break. While his split-finger is an out pitch, he rarely throws it for a strike. He has a live arm but has a max-effort delivery, likely limiting him to a relief role as a pro.

    4th ROUND
RHP Ethan Hollingsworth Central Michigan University R-R 6-2 200

Hollingsworth was a first-team All-MAC selection for the second time this spring. He was the Central Michigan No. 1 starter, going 5-5 with a 3.84 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 84 1/3 innings.

``Knows how to pitch. His fastball sits at 89-92 mph, and while he's unlikely to add more velocity in the future, he maintains what he has and commands to both sides of the plate. His swing-and-miss slider is his best pitch, and he also mixes in an average 12-to-6 curveball and a decent changeup. Hollingsworth throws strikes, works down in the zone and keeps hitters off balance by mixing his pitches and locations. He's likely as good as he's going to get, but he knows how to pitch and should move quickly in pro ball.''

    5th ROUND
    3B Chris Dominguez Louisville R-R 6-5 235

Redshirt sophomore suffered a broken arm in collision with baserunner early in freshman season. Voted Big East Player of Year in 2008 and was only consensus first-team selection. Led Louisville to first Big East title. Hit .369 with 67 runs scored, 13 doubles, 20 home runs and 74 RBI. committed only six errors.

He can drive baseballs as far as anyone in college baseball, but has a propensity to swing and miss, chasing pitches out of the zone and falling behind in the count. Dominguez flashed a mid-90s fastball as a reliever a year ago, though he has a strong desire to remain an everyday player and didn't pitched this spring. His arm is an asset at third base and he also has decent hands, but he doesn't cover a lot of ground.

    6th ROUND
    C Kiel Roling Arizona State R-R 6-3 225
Graduate of Grand Junction Central High School, where he hit nine home runs in 19 games as a junior. Selected in 31st round by Arizona two years ago after a year at Central Arizona College. Played last two years at ASU, splitting time as DH/catcher in 2007 and 1B/catcher in 2008. Hit .350 with 23 home runs and 113 RBI in two years at Arizona State.

``Kiel Roling shares duties behind the plate with (Petey) Paramore (third round draft of Arizona) and suffers by comparison. He's big and physical at 6-foot-3, 240 pounds. Needs to refine receiving skills. He's an offensive force but home run production dropped in 2008 from 15 to eight.''
Well from the early reports it looks like a pretty solid first six rounds, pitchers that are not huge developmental prospects and actaully have out pitches and command of both sides of the plate for the most part.

    Day 2 so far:
    7th ROUND
RHP Dan Houston Boston College R-R 6-3 205

Native of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Houston pitched in relief intiially at Boston College, but moved into No. 2 starter role for the ACC member his junior year. He was 3-4 with 5.03 ERA, second lowest on team. He struck out 72 and walks 32 in 73 1/3 innings.

``Scouts were impressed with Houston's ability to hold his 91-93 mph velocity deep into games and touch 94. He complements his solid-average fastball with an average overhand curveball with good depth, an average changeup that he gained confidence in down the stretch, and a hard slider that can be above-average at times. He has a durable frame and a sound delivery. Houston was hit hard in his last start against Wake Forest. Despite the poor finish, scouts believe he profiles as a back-of-the-rotation starter in the big leagues, and he could sneak into the fourth or fifth round.''

    8th ROUND
    RHP/SS Kurt Yacko Chapman University R-R 5-11 170
Selected NCAA All-Independent Player of Year last two seasons. First-team American Baseball Coaches Association All-America as a junior. Drafted as a reliever, Yacko was the starting shortstop and closer at Chapman. As a junjior was 6-0 with 15 saves, striking out 71 and walking 18 in 61 innings with a 0.59 ERA. Offensively, he hit .344 with 10 home runs, 18 doubles, three triples and 47 RBI.

    9th ROUND
    LHP Craig Benningson California R-L 6-2 215
Uses cut fastball and will sit in high 80s, low 90s according to school media guide. Has command of a changeup. Went 4-5 with a 6.75 ERA his junior year, showing some control problems (42 walks, 59 stirkeiouts in 65 1/3 innings.

    10th ROUND
RHP Stephen Dodson Georgia R-R 6-5 210 Primary starter for SEC champion Bulldogs was 5-4 with a 4.41 ERA, lowest among Georgia starting pitchers, in 15 starts. Walked only 12 with 46 strikeouts in 87 2/3 innings pitched.

    11th ROUND
    LHP Kyle Walker Texas L-L 6-1 195
Considered to have a power arm with movement, but struggled with command junior season. Worked only 17 2/3 innings, giving up 21 hits and 19 walks, striking out 26. Was 1-0 with 6.62 ERA and no saves.

    12th ROUND
    3B/1B Ryan Peisel Georgia R-R 6-3 205
Had big offensive season senior year, hitting .332 with 21 doubles, two triples, eight home runs and 46 RBI. Hit .294 as a junior with a school record 18-game hitting streak.

    13th ROUND
    2B Erik Wetzel Fresno State R-R 6-1 180
All-WAC first team selection last two years. Led Bulldogs in hitting as a sophomore (.346) and junior (.382). Also had 14 duobles, one triple, 12 home runs and 81 RBI this season. Has started all but two games for Fresno State in three years at the school. Was a goalie on high school water polo team.

    14th ROUND
    1B Tyler Massey Chattanooga, Tn. L-L 6-0 205
Committed to University of Tennessee. Was No. 1 pitcher and first baseman for The Baylor School of Tennessee. Went 12-2 as a pitcher, second loss came in final game of season when he was allowed to pitch second complete game in three days at state tournament, losing title game to Brentwood, which he beat in Game 1 of the tournament.
