The Colorado Rockies sit two games up in the competitive National League West going into Monday night's games.

A quarter of the way through the season, it's not a huge surprise that the Rox, who have been a team on the verge for years, are playing good ball.

The reasons behind that good play, however, are surprising.

The Rockies aren't getting it done with prodigious bats — though they're not exactly light-hitting this year, either. No, the Rockies are relying on their pitching — particularly a (pardon the pun) rock solid bullpen led by Greg Holland (19 saves, 0.96 ERA) and Adam Ottavino.

Wait, wut?

Hoffman was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday.

Hoffman will head back to Albuquerque to clear room on the roster for Trevor Story (shoulder), who was activated from the disabled list Tuesday. Hoffman pitched very well in his spot start Monday, tossing seven innings of one-run ball while striking out seven and walking none. While the outing wasn't enough to keep him in the big-league rotation for now, he'll likely remain one of the next men in line.

These things usually are based on how many options guys have left. Lyles is probably out of options - so if we want to send him down we are essentially cutting him and making him available to all of the other 31 teams. Only if all the other teams pass would he then accept his minor league assignment.

We may ultimately still be headed there - but they're essentially buying themselves time.

That's the reason Lyles is still on the major league roster. Plus, most teams have a punt option in the bullpen, which is maddening, but kind of a fact of life. The Royals are still running out Chris Young with his 86-mph fastball and slider that doesn't slide.
