On June 7, 1998, Neifi Perez was forced to play catcher for two batters against the Anaheim Angels. The Rockies subbed Jeff Reed into the game for Kirt Manwaring and Reed was injured in a play where he tagged out Dave Hollins at the plate for the second out of the ninth inning. The game is tied at 5-5 and Jim Edmonds is at third, Neifi Perez is moved to catcher. The Rockies walk Tim Salmon and Cecil Fielder comes to the plate. Reliever Jerry Dipoto (now general manager for the Mariners) throws a slider that Perez misses and Edmonds scores on the wild pitch.

    Story courtesy Effectively Wild pod.
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.

I think you just won some kind of baseball writing in under 100 words competition, good job!

Default Saunders: Brilliance of Rockies’ Nolan Arenado is tough to capture in words, stats or tweets

    CHICAGO — “Nolan being Nolan.”

That’s the ubiquitous tweet that pops up every time Nolan Arenado makes another spellbinding play at third base. In other words, someone tweets “Nolan being Nolan” just about every game.

On the surface, the tweet suggests we’re getting blasé about Arenado’s brilliance. Actually, we’re not, we’re just running out of ways to describe what he does on the baseball diamond.

Thursday night, in the fourth inning of the Rockies’ 4-1 victory over the Cubs, Arenado glided far to his left, barehanded Kris Bryant’s grounder and threw out Bryant by a half step. Even Cubs fans at Wrigley Field applauded.

Manager Bud Black said he had never seen a third baseman range so far to his left but still use his bare hand. Arenado wasn’t showing off; his instincts simply told him it was the only way to nab Bryant.

“I actually work on barehanding grounders like that,” Arenado told me.

Default Tony Wolters morphed into a catcher exactly when the Rockies needed. His defense is behind Colorado’s pitching rise.

The idea first germinated on a bored night in a rented house Terry Francona shared with his bullpen coach, not far from Cleveland’as spring clubhouse in Goodyear, Ariz. Francona, a two-time World Series winner, wanted only to watch a basketball game on TV.

“Kevin Cash was living with me that spring,” Francona said of his boring night in 2013. “We’d go home at night and if there wasn’t a college basketball game on, then we’d talk about baseball. And we were going back and forth. And I said, ‘Man, he looks like he can do this.’ ”

The “he” was young infielder Tony Wolters. The “this” was an abrupt position switch to catcher. A left-handed hitting catcher is too enticing to ignore. That brainstorm eventually set in motion a Colorado turnaround.

The Rockies have the youngest pitching staff in the major leagues, by far, behind four rookie starters with an average age of 23. Those pitchers went a combined 22-9 through nine weeks. They are succeeding in large part with the help of an equally inexperienced catcher, Wolters.

“He likes the idea of trying to get a pitcher through a game,” Francona said. “You can see how much he cares.”

The game was delayed by the umps who were talking on the replay system, presumably to NY and then having fairly long convos with the managers. Turned out to be some technical issue with the replay system. Game started five minutes late or something. It looked like it threw Senza off alittle though just because he was out there waiting for the game to start.

I've seen that a lot last year...gives you all sorts of confidence in the system.

I don't understand why we have replay if we ignore the video evidence.
