Default Douglas County's Williams agrees to terms with Rockies

DENVER — Case Williams made his childhood dream official Wednesday.

It's been a whirlwind for the recent Douglas County High School graduate, just a few days removed from being drafted by his hometown team.

The Colorado Rockies selected the local right-handed pitcher in the fourth round of the 2020 MLB draft (110th overall), and both sides agreed to terms Wednesday.

According to a release from the Rockies, the agreement terms will not be released, per club policy.

"I started to tear up and so did my dad," Williams told 9NEWS last week. "It just felt like forever and it happened and it was so unbelievable and it didn't feel real, really."

Default Matt Kemp agrees to minor-league deal with Rockies

In the wake of Ian Desmond’s decision to opt out of the 2020 season, the Rockies have agreed to a minor-league deal with veteran slugger Matt Kemp.

Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich said Tuesday that the deal will be finalized in the next day or two. The club will open its summer camp Wednesday at Coors Field.

Kemp spent spring training with the Miami Marlins but was left off Miami’s 60-man player pool. If Kemp makes Colorado’s roster, he could be utilized as a designated hitter in a shortened season that will include the designated hitter in all games.

Default Rockies players report to Coors Field in better shape than expected, manager Bud Black says

The Rockies reported to summer camp Friday at Coors Field and manager Bud Black was pleased with what he saw.

The manager said that the players were “maybe even in a little better (shape) than what the coaches and I thought they would be.”

The Rockies also are, apparently, in relatively good health regarding the coronavirus. Three players, all-star outfielder Charlie Blackmon and pitchers Phillip Diehl and Ryan Castellani, had all previously tested positive for COVID-19. But Black said that all of the players on the Rockies’ 52-man player pool — with the exception of Blackmon — are expected to practice Saturday when the team holds its first full-scale workouts.

Black added that Blackmon will have plenty of time to prepare for his job as Colorado’s starting right fielder before the 60-game season starts on July 23 or 24. Blackmon is also expected to see time as a designated hitter this year.

Default Rockies release highly paid relievers Jake McGee and Bryan Shaw, ushering in new era for Colorado’s bullpen

The Rockies released veteran pitchers Bryan Shaw and Jake McGee on Friday in a move aimed at reinvigorating the club’s bullpen, which posted a 5.18 ERA last year.

Colorado’s waiving of the duo brings an end to a pricey and ineffective tenure for both pitchers, who each signed three-year, $27 million deals prior to the 2018 season.

“The primary piece of the decision was past performance and expected future performance,” Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich said. “The last couple of years has been a rough go for both guys in terms of consistency of performance.”

Default Rockies manager Bud Black names German Marquez Opening Day starter

DENVER — German Marquez is arguably the Colorado Rockies best pitcher.

On Monday, manager Bud Black confirmed the club feels the same way, announcing Marquez as the team's Opening Day starter on Friday night against the Texas Rangers.

"It feels good. I called my family and let them know that I'm going to be the (Opening Day) starter, so they are happy. I've been working for that. It's going to be one of many (and) I'm so happy," Marquez said in a conference call with reporters on Monday.

The right-handed pitcher has won double digit games each of the last three seasons for Colorado, including a 12-5 mark in 2019 before missing the last month of the season with arm inflamation. Marquez has posted ERAs of 4.39, 3.77 and 4.76 in the last three seasons, respectively

The Rockies are being made fun of by the prospect guys for never using their top prospects again.

    Ah, it’s beisbol season, finally.

Holy smokes, it's actually happening. They are playing Sam Hilliard over Matt Kemp.

    Hilliard showed flashes last year.

I kinda want to see Murphy DH, McMahon play 1st and Rodgers at 2nd. Its time to bring the kid up. Tapia excites me very little.

I am glad they are playing Sam

ARLINGTON, Texas — Opening Day: A universal day of hope.

Colorado Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard has another reason to feel optimistic.

His father, Jim, lives with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) -- also known as 'Lou Gehrig's disease' -- and received special permission to watch his son on this momentous occasion.

"That's honestly a dream come true. It's such a blessing for my family to have him here," Sam said. "Whether I play or not, it's just going to be awesome to see him, especially in the new ballpark here in Arlington. It's going to be really awesome."

Drew just said Story wants to steal 30+ bags this year. Really Drew, in a 60 game season? That shit would be impressive.
