Default MLB free agent rumors: Rockies bolster bullpen, close in on Greg Holland deal

The Rockies, intent on bolstering their bullpen, did so Tuesday and Wednesday with a one-two punch of adding right-hander Bryan Shaw and then agreeing to a deal to retain left-hander Jake McGee.

The question: Is there such thing as a one-two-three punch?

With a couple of key setup roles settled, Colorado then reportedly was nearing a deal to re-sign free-agent closer Greg Holland, who had 41 saves for them in a bounce-back 2017 season following Tommy John surgery.

Hat tip to Bridich who at least seems to be making sensible moves in two consecutive off seasons that address needs...

There were so many offseasons where we just didn't do anything to address pitching and then would sign a bunch of journeymen and hope for the best.

Holland wasn't all that effective in the 2nd half and kind of looked out of shape to me, so I hope we don't overpay - but at the same time experienced bullpen arms don't grow on trees and beggars can't be choosers.

"Depth" signing is probably underselling this a bit - 3 years and $52 million, this is a nice get. Now let's see what other former Royals are available.

Between Davis, McGee and Shaw, the Rockies signed three of the top seven available free-agent relief pitchers this winter.
So the Rockies, before the New Year, have invested more than $50 million in their bullpen for the 2018 season — among the priciest bullpens in baseball’s history.

Excited to see Brendan Rodgers with the big club this spring. He can't be too far away from his big league debut. Maybe not this next season but the one after that at the latest I would think.

He should be in the majors next season, at some point, so 2019 to be clear, mid June after the super 2 cutoff.
*The statements above are my opinions, unless they are links, because then they are links, which wouldn't make them my opinions, and I suppose stats aren't necessarily opinion, but they are certainly presented to support an opinion. Proceed accordingly.

Default Rockies unveil rendering of giant new scoreboard at Coors Field

The Rockies are building a scoreboard to match the mountains.

On Wednesday, the club provided a sneak peek of its huge new video scoreboard being constructed in left-center at Coors Field. The massive new scoreboard will measure 8,369 square feet — 258 percent larger than the board it’s replacing.

The new addition to Coors Field is not just the Mount Elbert of scoreboards, it will also feature the shape of a mountain cutout, reminiscent of the club’s Colorado mountains logo.

According to the Rockies, Daktronics, the industry leader in large-format LED video displays, is creating a display that is the equivalent of 784 60-inch televisions, and will feature 6.8 million LEDs (light-emitting diodes).

I would love for the Rockies to take a swing at Hosmer and Arrieta. With this weird FA period maybe this is the year for the Rox to bring in some guys we might not be able to land in normal years.

If your law school can, try to organize a team to compete in the National Baseball Arbitration Competition. I had a blast when I did it. Tulane hosts.

I bought my own airfare and we split a hotel. We got the school to cover a portion, but it wasn't much. If you meet enough law students that you wouldn't mind hanging out with in Nola, you should consider it.
