rest - http://milehighsports.com/2013/11/21...p-the-rockies/The idea that the Colorado Rockies need to “revamp” their bullpen is not new and it’s not news. It’s the case with them – and a lot of other teams – after almost every season. While Colorado’s overworked ‘pen struggled mightily during the second half of last season, it’s far from the most pressing issue that faces the organization this offseason.
Therefore, the recent addition of 40-year-old free agent pitcher LaTroy Hawkins is not an answer for what ails this team. It’s not close.
Not that Hawkins isn’t a quality pitcher, because he is. He’s had a fine career and been brought in to help eat up innings and mentor young closer Rex Brothers, who needs a veteran influence around him to offset the departure of Rafael Betancourt. Hawkins should fill that role nicely. But adding the journeyman reliever to the overworked bullpen will not result in adding anything meaningful to the win column. It’s just treading water.

Rich Dauer, Dexter Fowler, Pedro Alvarez AP
Trade rumors have been swirling around Dexter Fowler for a while now and the Rockies have sent the center fielder to the Astros in exchange for right-hander Jordan Lyles and outfielder Brandon Barnes.
Fowler is 27 years old with two seasons remaining before free agency and the Astros’ payroll is so low that the fact he’s getting expensive probably doesn’t matter to them. His lack of production away from Coors Field is a more important issue, because for his career Fowler has hit just .241 with a .694 OPS on the road compared to .298 with an .880 OPS in Colorado.

Oh well, at least it's a starting pitcher. I'd rather have Dexter's equivalent as a pitcher.
Just looked up Lyles, great 2 losing seasons with 5+ ERAs. Championship!

After seeing Fister get shipped out of Detroit for virtually nothing yesterday - I wish we could have gotten more. But Dexter is an enigma anyway. My hope is that we can replace his average hitting fairly easily, while Lyles could be better than the dumpster fire pitchers we've been rolling through the #4 and #5 slots in recent years.
Look at the bright side. He pitched for the Astros and those number ought to come down a little...
