http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci...e-gave-rockiesPHOENIX — Todd Helton has never done halfway.
When Helton sat down for lunch Saturday, his mind was made up. There was no gray area for the man who has worn purple pinstripes his entire 17-year career. With his wife, Christy, at his side, Helton confidently uttered the words he had never spoken publicly.
"Yes, this is it," Helton said. "I am retiring."
Helton isn't big on plans. He lives hour to hour, moment to moment, a puzzling schedule for an icon who has followed a regimented program for nearly two decades. But the timing of his announcement had a purpose.
Thank you Todd for all the memories - You are definitely the greatest player the Rockies have had

ANDFirst baseman Todd Helton, the longest-tenured and arguably greatest player in Colorado Rockies history, announced he will retire at season's end. Helton, who turned 40 on Aug. 20, is in the final year of his contract, and his retirement has been expected all along. However, he declined to make the announcement before now, saying he would be uncomfortable with the inevitable curtain calls, gifts and recognition that come with final visits to various cities.

"For seventeen years, number '17' has been the icon of Colorado Rockies baseball," Rockies owner, chairman and chief executive officer Dick Monfort said in the statement. "Todd will be missed and our hope is he will be a part of our Colorado baseball family for many more years to come. Thanks Todd!"

from article:
full article - http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?...s_col&c_id=colHelton will take about a year off, he said, before contemplating the future, which might include a return to the Rockies organization in some yet-to-be-defined capacity.
"I haven't talked to them about that, no," Helton said. "Yeah, it might be something I'd like to do somewhere down the road. The idea of retiring is to get away from it for awhile. I do know baseball. Hopefully, if I ever want to get back into it, they'd talk to me."
Helton said his announcement came at this point because he wanted to give Rockies fans a chance to see him one last time as the club embarks on its last nine-game homestand of the season Monday night against the Cardinals. His last game at Coors Field could be for the home finale on Sept. 25 against the Red Sox.
"It was brought up to me last week that I couldn't look at it from my perspective, that I had to look at it from the fans'," Helton said. "That it would be selfish if I didn't [announce it now], and I never thought of it that way. Once I heard that, I said, 'Let's do it!' We're going into the last homestand and I wanted to go into that homestand knowing it would be my last."

I bought two tickets for the September 25th game against the Sox, it should be Todd's last game at Coors field. I'll be taking my son who is a gigantic Helton fan. Should be a very long ovation when they announce his name that night.
Let's Rid3!!!!
Christy Helton has looked up at the giant scoreboard beyond left field at Coors Field countless times and viewed the image of her husband. She saw a serious, no-nonsense ballplayer.
"It's his game face," she said. "Fans don't really get to see the real Todd very often."
But the softer, sentimental side of Todd Helton emerged Monday afternoon at Coors Field when the icon of the Rockies' franchise formally announced his retirement from Major League Baseball.
AND
rest - http://www.denverpost.com/rockies/ci...ent?source=rssBut it was clear that Helton will have a hard time letting go of the game of his life. He teared up several times and his voice broke as he said good-bye. Many of Helton's current teammates, along with manager Walt Weiss and most of the Rockies' staff, were on hand. So was Matt Holliday, the current Cardinals outfielder who helped the Rockies and Helton reach the World Series in 2007.
"He was an elite player for a long time," Holliday said. "He is a Hall of Famer to me."

http://blogs.denverpost.com/rockies/...rpenter/15669/Todd Helton learned a thing or two in his 17 seasons in major-league baseball. Among them: How to take advantage of a sleepy baserunner after he dives back to first base. See the modified hidden ball trick in the video below.

Manning, the Broncos' star quarterback, had just said a bunch of nice things during his news conference Thursday. But later, outside the locker room, he was still thinking about Helton, his former teammate at the University of Tennessee. Helton is retiring after 17 years with the Rockies.
"I think Todd just made me the oldest player in Denver?" Manning said.

rest - http://denver.cbslocal.com/2013/09/2...2-big-assists/ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Peyton Manning plans to catch Todd Helton’s final home game for the Colorado Rockies next week so he can pay homage to his college buddy who gave him two big assists over the years.
The first came when Manning was a homesick freshman at the University of Tennessee in 1994 and Helton, already a star in both football and baseball, took him under his wing and helped him adjust to college life.
The second came when Manning was plotting his comeback from neck problems two years ago that nearly derailed his NFL career.
