I like how we made a play for Aaron Cook and failed. That ought to tell you about where our pitching staff is at.
My eyes rolled so hard at this that they almost went into the back of my head. Cook is at the end of his career and has a better chance of getting into the post season with Phillies than he does Colorado. If I was Aaron Cook, I'd turn down the Rockies too (plus I don't think he'll see much time in the Bigs with the Phillies).
I'm fine with not getting Cook because:
1. He's done in Colorado. It was evident last year when they released them.
2. Cook is done with Colorado as long as DoD is the GM there.
3. Cook is damaged goods.
I'm more comfortable with a 37 year old that I'm guessing isn't going to make the 25 man roster in the End of March than the 33 year old that I loved in a Rockies uniform.
I wish Cook the best, and I hope he makes me eat my words, but from what I've seen, he's done.
Fair enough. Goinng after Pavano, to me, just makes the Rockies look like a joke.
The Rockies aren't really looking to spend in Free Agency this winter. They plan on working to develop their prospects and try to compete that way. This hot stove season is similar to the one we had in '08 which lead to our playoff run in '09. Do I expect playoffs this season? No, but we certainly aren't in the position to try to make a Peyton Manning deal for a run in the playoffs.
And that's perfectly fine. I think teams make the mistake of bringing in these strange free agents to fill a spot instead of just developing the kids they have. I think Kansas City has ruined some pitchers doing it. If Pavano ends up in Colorado Springs to start the year, that just blocks a starting spot for a young pitcher in Triple A.
It just seems like a bad move. At least Lowe will contribute in the Bigs.

A year after sparring with Rockies excutives over his weight and conditioning, Chacin impressed them with his recovery and performance following a pectoral injury, awarding the right-hander a two-year, $6.5 million contract, pending a physical.
The deal would leave one arbitration season before free agency following the 2014 season.
Chacin tweeted the news Saturday afternoon, which was confirmed by multiple major league sources.

But he returned a year later.
Dealin' Dan O'Dowd, Rockies dictator for life, was exiled to Modesto last year.
But he's returning this spring.
It is well to remember that in 1815 Napoleon met his Waterloo, and was banished, permanently this time, to St. Helena.
Will O'Dowd finally confront his Waterloo in 2013? Not likely.
How long, Colorado, O how long?
IMO, Woody has some good points

Both players were the subject of trade rumors during the offseason. Both said they're glad to be back in purple.
Fowler, especially, was a hot trade topic this winter. The Rockies listened to proposals, but they were asking for a lot in return — namely a proven starting pitcher who could induce groundball outs, as well as a young, impact hitter. The trade talks never gained much traction.

Rockies give Low-A Prospect Tyler Anderson a non-roster ST invite.
It will be interesting to see what he can do so young against major league hitters in ST.Anderson, 23, a left-handed pitcher, was impressive enough at the low Class A level in 2012 -- his first year of pro ball -- that the Rockies called with a surprise invitation to Major League camp. He had to do some quick rearranging to arrive for Sunday's report date for pitchers and catchers. The Rockies said Saturday there is no formal plan for Sunday. Physicals will be Monday, and the first workout at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick will be Tuesday.
