Default Walt Weiss interviews for Rockies manager job; Matt Williams also in running

A surprise and former popular Rockie emerged as a strong candidate Friday as the Rockies interviewed Walt Weiss for the vacant manager's job, according to a major-league source.

Weiss played several seasons for the Rockies in the mid-1990s and later served as a special assistant to general manager Dan O'Dowd before leaving to become the varsity baseball coach at Regis Jesuit High School.

Matt Williams has also emerged as a candidate for the Rockies' job, according to a major-league source. Williams is currently the third-base coach for Arizona. He was a member of the Diamondbacks' 2001 World Series championship team and has coached the past two years on Kirk Gibson's staff in Arizona.

Default Carlos Gonzalez wins second Gold Glove for Rockies

Carlos Gonzalez, Denver Nuggets coach George Karl said, reminded him of watching Roberto Clemente in his prime. There’s little that Gonzalez can’t do on the baseball field. Even during the Rockies’ worst season ever, he still stood out among his peers. He was recognized Tuesday night, winning his second Rawlings Gold Glove as voted by managers and coaches.

The best dont always win it. Even as an Orioles die-hard...I can easily admit Trout should have won instead of Adam Jones. And I'd be willing to bet most of baseball would agree.

I think most of them were right on. There were a few I would have picked differently.

Wait. Is Jason Giambi really a serious candidate for manager?

Hell, I'd rather we hire him than our bench coach who oversaw this mess. Plus, that means we won't have to worry about having a backup 1B in his mid-40s.

Yes. I'm not saying he's the best candidate, but he's the only in-house guy I'd be happy with.

If they want a former player, I can think of plenty of options I would want instead of Giambi.

Vinny Castilla? (He's always the right answer).

Giardi could stay in NY for all I care. I'd kind of like to see Helton retire and take a coaching position, but I don't think he's the type of player that would do that.

I think Matt Williams would be the best choice, but he is by no means a yes man. He won't just "go with the flow" the next time they try something stupid, say, like an eleven-man rotation.

    I agree.

It pains me to say it, since he was dbag and a giant, but he would probably be my choice.

Every name on Earth is going to pop up now. Problem is, they are going to want someone that buys into the master plan.
