Default Rockies' Kouzmanoff becomes a free agent

The Rockies' roster maneuvers have begun, claiming third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff as the most high-profile victim.

Kouzmanoff, a product of Evergreen High School, has been outrighted and has elected for free agency.

Right handed pitchers Matt Daley, Jim Miller, Greg Reynolds and Cory Riordan, and catcher Jose Morales also were outrighted off the 40-man roster, and they currently remain in the Rockies organization at the minor league level. However, both Daly and Morales will become minor-league free agents after the World Series, general manager Dan O'Dowd said today. O'Dowd said he has interest in bringing both of them back if deals can be worked out.

Default Pomeranz arrested for disturbing the peace

Just great - never would have heard this with Ubaldo

Rockies rookie pitcher Drew Pomeranz was arrested early this morning in Oxford, Miss. and charged with disturbing the peace.

Pomeranz, a left-hander who was considered the centerpiece of the Ubaldo Jimenez trade, was arrested at 1:25 a.m. after leaving a bar with friends, according to the Oxford (Miss.) Eagle. He was released on cash bond at 4:40 a.m.

Carol, how have you been? Your son is doing a hell of a job, getting some marquee games. The NFL isn't too far away.

Also, not thrilled about our new ace getting in bar fights.

He was the white hat in the Red River Shootout this year, if I'm not mistaken.

Default Rockies' Juan Nicasio making strong progress after neck fracture

Rockies' pitcher Juan Nicasio is making remarkable progress in his return from a broken neck, increasing the possibility that he will resume his major league career next season.

Nicasio, who fractured his C-1 vertebrae on Aug. 5 after being struck by a line drive, has begun throwing off a mound for the first time since his injury.

"It's a miracle. It really is," general manager Dan O'Dowd told The Denver Post today. "I saw him in Arizona (at the Rockies' spring training facility) working out in the weight room, running and pitching. He looked just like any other player getting ready for the season."

Default Tulowitzki named The Sporting News' all-star shortstop

The Rockies' 2011 season was a bust, but Tulo's reputation emerged unscathed.

The Sports News today named Troy Tulowitzki as its starting shortstop on it's National League all-star team.

The award carries weight because it's selected by 55 members of major league front offices — 26 AL executives and 29 NL executives.

This article, on Juan, is dated today, so must have some new stuff in it:

ST. LOUIS — Rockies pitcher Juan Nicasio is making remarkable progress in his return from a broken neck, increasing the possibility he will resume his major-league career next season.

Default Rockies, Giambi near agreement on option for 2012 season

ST. LOUIS — After surveying the landscape, Jason Giambi seems set to return to the Rockies next season when he exercises the mutual option on his $1 million contract.

He doesn't have to officially make a decision until Monday, with the club facing a Wednesday deadline to pick up his contract. But it's likely there will be a joint announcement Monday given Giambi's thinking and the Rockies' desire to bring him back.

As Todd Helton's backup, Giambi hit .260 with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs in 131 at-bats in 2011. The slugger, who hit a home run once every 10 at-bats against right-handed pitchers, weighed becoming a free agent given the interest in him by the Phillies and Rays, among others, last year. But Giambi enjoys his role with the Rockies, where he has a strong voice in the clubhouse and serves as a mentor to young players.

Do you think there's anything to the talk you see on the internet about the Rockies potentially moving to the American League West? I know most of it has surrounded the Astros moving, but there has also been talk about maybe the Rockies doing so. I personally think it makes more sense than the Astros moving.

This is the first I've heard the Rockies mentioned in that conversation. None of the local guys have picked up on it. I hope it's not true - the designated hitter is a joke.

On an unrelated note - Top 50 free agents - http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...html?hpt=hp_t2

I've heard a couple of different places saying that, but it would suck.
