Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 29, 2010 11:53 AM ET
With teams able to use a franchise and a transition tag this offseason barring a collective bargaining agreement, the following numbers will be of interest to many players around the league.
Here's a look at the franchise and transition numbers at each position, courtesy of Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger.
The numbers are based on the average of the highest five or ten players at each position, depending on which tag you use.

Quarterback: $16.405 million [franchise tag], $14.546 million [transition tag]
    Defensive end: $12.398m, $10.193m

    Offensive line: $10.731m, $9.142m
    Linebacker: $9.680m, $8.373m
    Cornerback: $9.566 m , $8.056 m
    Wide receiver: $9.521m, $8.651m
    Running back: $8.156m, $7.151m
    Defensive tackle: $7.003m, $6.353m
    Safety: $6.455m, $6.011m
    Tight end: $5.908m, $5.248m
    Punter/kicker: $2.814m, $2.629m

Interesting. If we decide to franchise Doom, the switch from DE to LB this year will save us 3 million.

this makes things very easy transition marshall, Franchise doom while we keep working a long term contract for doom.....marshall gets a hefty raise with the transition tag as does doom....keeps em both happy while we get a better look at both players for 1 more year, and then we can focus on the season instead of trade distractions with marshall in march.....

But with the Transition tag, all denver would get is a chance to match. Nothing else in return.

That's not being very smart, imho.

They need to use the Franchise tag on one and pay the other one. Use the TT on somebody more affordable to lose....like Sheffler.

Scheffler will most likely just be cut, he doesn't want to be in Denver and I highly doubt anybody in the front office wants him to stay around...the dude can't even block.

He can't block well but the guy just makes plays. I can't see how an "offensive genius" can't use a guy like schef.

Probably the same "genius" that doesn't use Peyton Hillis... Seriously, we would've had a lot more success in short yardage situations with him out there.

perhaps had the OLINE been able to open holes he could have.

But being met in the back field makes it a sosch harder to pick up yardage.

I think Hillis will be kept as he is CHEAP, a good ST player and I believe now the bobby is gone he will see more touches. HE is way to much like Kevin Faulk for josh not to use him.

I watch RBs dodge players in the backfield all the time... go watch MJD, something like the week AFTER everyone threw a hissy about the run blocking against Indy. Guess what? MJD cut back against that frontside pressure and punished them. Our RBs, mainly Moreno, just ran right into their arms. He was not getting met right as he got the ball. More often than not, he got tackled in the backfield because he was trying to press the hole that was supposed to be there and didn't cut it back like Buck was willing to do.. he OFTEN missed holes (NFL holes are NOT the size of college holes.. man that sounds dirty) but the fact is that Moreno's indecision had more to do with things than anything else. Buck ran just fine when he was back there, but the young RB didn't... it was unbelievable the way McD threw the OL under the bus when it was Moreno not cutting it back and taking the holes that were there. My personal opinion after watching Moreno all through college... somebody told him he is to hit the hole where its supposed to be, period, keep pressing it - because he NEVER ran that tentatively or seemingly confused before. (How many times did we see him ride the back of an OL?) I suspect McD wants the hole to be where the hole is supposed to be... but the zone blocking scheme Denver ran for 15 damn years and the OL were trained in was predicated often, on taking the lineman where they wanted to go, created creases and backside cut lanes. Then it was the RBs job to simply find the hole wherever it appeared. I really am not impressed with the changes in the running system nor have I ever been impressed with NEs version since BB took over, they've never been all that effective or dominant running the ball. We are heading back to the days of Gaston Green and Rod Bernstine.

Look for Shanny/McD to do some moves.

    Shef most assuredly.

Did you ever stop to think he did not see the precieved talent that you and a few other MMQB's did.

That perhaps he did not want to add a pass catching TE that can't fufill his primary function of being able to BLOCK to the payroll next year.

Per haps he thought that it was not worth his time to add plays into the book for just a few games.

That perhaps becuase he tried to trade him LAST year he is not in his plans this coming year.

One of these days Y'all are going GET that he has a PLaybook already that has been very successful which does not employ passes to TE's that can't block.

I'm also guessing that he has forgotten more about football than many on here know at this time.

I'd just bet that Pat would love to hear from you about your disaproval of Joshes scheme.

Hell he might fire his head coach and offer it to you.
