Thread: HDTV purchasing question

Is the week before super bowl sunday the best (best as in cheapest price) time of year to buy a brand name HDTV? I am looking to buy a 40"-50" LCD, but all the black friday nonsense was literal nonsense...all the cheap (as in low price) hdtv's advertised were cheap (as in no-name brand) knockoffs used to lure people to the doors at 3:00am.

I currently have have a "knock off" (Magnavox after they were sold to the Chinese) 32" 1080 LCD that I purchased in summer of 2006 that has worked very well to this day....but I am looking for a new one.

Sorry for just rambling here, bored at work, and hoping someone can give me some input or advice.

Ahhh, you should've probably got one the week before or the week after Christmas.

It's not too late to take advantage of post-Christmas sales as retailers are making way for new product.

If you are after the best "bang for the buck" go with Vizio or a DLP. If you want just a flat out badass, no bullshit TV, get a Samsung LED...clearest picture I've ever seen and Best Buy had a 47" for $1800 the week before Christmas.

I've got a 52" Samsung DLP. It's 1080p, 120hz, and 100% awesome. I've yet to see an LCD or Plasma that has a better picture with full 1080p than my DLP...the LED on the other hand...wow

I'd stick with LCD or the (newer) LED...

DLP is about gone and plasma is on it's way out from what I've read...

We've got 1 plasma and 3 LCDs - all Samsung - and have been happy with all...

DLP has never sold as well as LCD or Plasma because it was never "trendy", but the picture quality is better. I won't get rid of my DLP until at least two years from now when my warranty expires.

Do they still sell high definition 1080 CRT televisions? I want one of those.
Picture quality is better. The only problem is burn in and weight of the set.

CRT's can only be a certain size and after that they become to deep to be practical. The set would stick out to far from the wall.

What I did was got a year old model on line for closeout pricing. New TV, great price and I'm happy.

I don't know if there's 1080p CRT I know there's 1080i/540p for sure. It's too bad the market dictated LCD had to take over even with an inferior picture and higher cost.

I just ordered a 46 inch tv from Best Buy on Monday (with Blu Ray player bundle).
Sony - BRAVIA 46" Class / 1080p / 240Hz / LCD HDTV Model: KDL-46Z5100. Free delivery (have to wait until this Sunday for it). Total cost with tax was $1,758.00.

Can't wait to get rid of the Magnavox tube and join the modern age of technology.

I'm not referring to the resolution but to the actual size of the screen itself. You won't see one much bigger than that one and it's only 30".

CRT TVs have been made as large as 43 inches, but size, weight, and power limitations pretty much limit them to a maximum size of 36 inches. They are quite economical to manufacture, which keeps their prices much lower than any other display technology at present.

Nowadays with 30-something inch 1080 flat LCD's sold at less than $500 in some retailers, seems to me the way to go.

I have a two year old 42" Aquos, one of the best HDTV's out there IMO. One of the most important things to look for is contrast ratio. It gives deep blacks and really sets HDTV's apart from one another. Also LCD or LED is the way to go for richer blacks and contrast. Sharp, LG, and Insignia are all great choices. Insignia and Westinghouse run cheaper because they usually don't have on t.v. controls to cut down costs, so make sure you don't lose the remote!
