Brendan Lemieux, Claude's kid, a perfect pick for Colorado Avalanche
Quote:
Brendan Lemieux's rise to the NHL began when he was 3 months old, when he sat inside the Stanley Cup after his father raised it. It was June 1996, and Claude Lemieux had helped the Avalanche capture the Cup in the franchise's first season in Denver.
Eighteen years later, Brendan Lemieux — a nephew of sorts to Avs brass Joe Sakic and Patrick Roy, Claude's teammates in Denver from 1995-99 — is a candidate to become the Avs' first-round selection in the 2014 draft. Sakic and Roy won't pick Lemieux at No. 23 because of their strong ties to his family, or because Brendan was born in Denver, but they undoubtedly could use a player of his ilk.
Brendan is built like his father, emotionally and physically, and Claude Lemieux did just about everything in his 20-year NHL career that ended in 2009 at age 43. The four-time Stanley Cup winner would shoot from anywhere, throw his body at anyone and chirp with the best of them. He had 379 career NHL goals and 1,777 penalty minutes to prove it.

Patrick Roy says Avs hoping for long deals with Paul Stastny, Ryan O'Reilly
Quote:
LAS VEGAS — Avalanche coach Patrick Roy expressed optimism Monday that long-term deals still can be worked out for potential unrestricted free-agent center Paul Stastny and restricted free agent Ryan O'Reilly of the Avalanche.
"They both are very important players to our team," Roy said at the Wynn Resort and Casino, where the NHL's awards show will be held Tuesday night and where he is up for coach of the year. "I'm certainly very confident things will go well."
Starting Wednesday, teams can start calling players from other teams if they are still unsigned, even though no formal deals can made until July 1.

P.A. Parenteau traded to Canadiens, Avalanche acquires Daniel Briere
Quote:
In a surprising move, the Avalanche traded one forward (P.A. Parenteau) to the Montreal Canadiens for another forward (Daniel Briere) who both are slated to make $4 million this coming season.
The Avs also acquired a fifth-round draft pick in 2015 from the Canadiens. In Briere, the Avs get a 36-year-old former big-time point producer whose production has slid steeply the last couple of seasons. But what he lacks in size (5-foot-9, 179 pounds), Briere has always made up for in toughness and character.
"Daniel is a veteran who brings experience to our hockey club. We're looking forward to him joining our team," Avs executive vice president Joe Sakic said in a statement.
