In a separate study conducted by Boston University’s Centre for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy (CSTE), scientists also discovered that 100% of Football Players included in NFL head injury statistics are found to show dramatic brain damage towards the end of their lives. It should also be noted that NFL Football Players who have experienced concussions also tend to die at a relatively younger age as well. During autopsy, scientists have further commented that the brains of these deceased Football Players also resemble that of a 75 year old man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease due to the massive tangling of their brain tissue.

If you know what the subject means, then you are probably already following Andrew Mason (@maxdenver), Lindsay Jones (@postbroncos) and Cecil Lammey (@cecillammey) on Twitter. If not, you really should be.

We are moving into the OTA/Mini-camp season, and before you know it, training camp will be open. There are a lot of reporters or radio/tv personalities on twitter that have good info on the Broncos, but there are no two people that provide coverage as great as these two and that have done it consistently year after year.

Even if you've been one of those "I don't need that Twit stuff...", you really should check these guys out. You can check out their info at:

www.twitter.com/postbroncos (Lindsay) and read her stuff at www.DenverPost.com/Broncos
www.twitter.com/maxbroncos (Andrew) and check out his GREAT Broncos articles at www.MaxDenver.com

Also, if you use Tweetdeck or another PC/mobile twitter app (an app is really the way to go) add @maxbroncos and @postbroncos

As I said, there are a lot of great people to follow on Twitter, and I don't want to disrespect any by only listing a few, but I will give one additional honorable mention and that is Cecil Lammey.

www.twitter.com/cecillammey or @cecillammey in your Tweetdeck or other Twitter app.

One of the reasons I mention just these three is that they post almost exclusively about the Broncos and post EXTENSIVE information about the Broncos during the offseason, draft, OTA's training camps, etc., not to mention during the season. There are others that post good info about the Broncos, but cover lots of other subjects on their radio/TV shows, and therefore on Twitter.

Right now, with 11 CBs currently on the roster, the Broncos are certainly stocked with CBs, indeed far more CBs than they can possibly take into the 53 man roster.

Obviously the starters are Champ and Tracy Porter, but beyond that there are a lot of question marks. Starters highlighted in Yellow. Probable backups in Orange.

Post your thoughts as to who might make the roster and what impact you see them making this season.

Here's a breakdown from today's Post:

Quote:

"I don't think you can ever have too many corners with a lot of the multiple-receiver sets that you get — and we will get with the types of quarterbacks that we have on our schedule this year," Broncos coach John Fox said.

RETURNING BRONCOS

• Champ Bailey: 14th year, starter.

• Tony Carter: Backup and special teams in 2011.

• Chris Harris: Nickel cornerback and special teams in 2011.

• Syd'Quan Thompson: Missed 2011 season with torn Achilles tendon.

• Cassius Vaughn: Backup and special teams the first half of 2011. Spent second half of the season on injured reserve.

FREE-AGENT ACQUISITIONS

• Drayton Florence: Longtime starter signed with Broncos last week after being cut by Buffalo.

• Tracy Porter: Starting right cornerback from New Orleans, only 25 years old.

• Joshua Moore: Played three games for Chicago in 2010.

• Ramzee Robinson: Played for Detroit, Philadelphia and Cleveland from 2007-09.

ROOKIES

• Omar Bolden: Fourth-round draft pick from Arizona State.

• Coryell Judie: Undrafted out of Texas A&M.

First, there were FIVE CBs on the 53 man roster at the start of last season. Of these Champ, Cassius Vaughn and Chris Harris are returning.

The Broncos might keep 6 CBs this year given Fox's attitude, but this is uncertain. In favor of the idea that the Broncos will keep 6 is they need a roster spot for Omar Bolden, who is likely to be the replacement for Eddie Royal as KR/PR.

Bolden is an interesting case. Normally 4th-7th round picks are for special teams and if he can return kicks, he fills a valuable space and despite being very raw from missing his entire senior season, he probably makes the 53 man roster as a Special Teams player. If he doesn't impress as a KR then they will probably try and slip him onto the developmental squad and it's likely they would succeed since nobody would claim him.

If I'm right and the Broncos keep 6 the first obvious thing is that the roster is stocked with veteran CBs. In addition to starters Champ, and FA acquisition Tracy Porter the Broncos also added Drayton Florence, a 32 year old 10 year veteran mostly spent with the Chargers. He would make an adequate Nickel Back unless some younger player is impressive enough to take that spot in the pre-season.

New veterans include Ramzee Robinson has been in the league for 4 seasons now as a backup in Detroit without impressing and Joshua Moore who was out of football in 2011 and is back for a look.

Neither are locks to make the roster though.

That would leave 2 more roster spots for CBs and 8 guys fighting for those spots.

Tony Carter and Chris Harris: I'm not down on Harris, but clearly the Broncos are trying to upgrade from him, hence all the CBs added. I'd not be surprised to see both cut in training camp.

Among Broncos backups, undrafted 2010 FA Cassius Vaughn might be the most interesting. He played decently until he was injured in the 2nd half of last season. He will have an uphill struggle to maintain his roster spot, but there's no reason to think he can't do it.

YOUR thoughts: :welcome:

The Broncos and Ty Warren are not seeing eye to eye on the team’s attempt to cut the veteran defensive lineman’s salary.

Warren is scheduled to make $4 million this year, in the second half of the two-year, $8 million contract he signed with the team last season. Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that the Broncos approached Warren about taking a pay cut to something in the range of $1 million or $1.5 million, and that Warren balked.

Its slow, TC hasnt started but the draft and more or less FA is over with. So come in this thread and waste your time with your top 2 picks for each conference SB teams.

AFC:
Steelers
Broncos

NFC
Eagles
Packers

Why?
Steelers- They added more beef to their D. Plus a home run threat in Rainey. Their guys aside from mendenhall will be healthy and they have two really good really fast WRs. Plus, you can never count out big ben.

Broncos- I think we will have one of the best offenses next year. I can see us averaging 30+ points a game. dead serious. That is enough to carry our defense which imo is more built to protect a lead, all the way to the promised land. And dont hate on my glasses.-last time we changed jerseys.......nevermind-were legit, thats all i got to say.

Eagles- WOW- this team just needed to come together as a unit (kinda like what the broncos need to do-only we have better leadership). But they could have the best offense in the NFL rivaling what brady and the pats did a few years back with the 59 tds or whatever it was. Plus, they added some players and I like their defense to get back to being dominant like it was before. I think they were near tops in turnovers last year. This team is the team to look out for right now.

Packers- they signed jeff saturday-nuff said.-kidding. I dont know or care if he plays, but I told everyone before rodgers played that he was going to be a super stud and he is and he is going to "fly high, you know it, Ballin!!!!" He is a Bowss! and much bigger better bowss than brady or eli or anyone else in the nfc. So they make it hard core!

Well made a plan to hit Denver this season for a game with the wife and a couple friends. Is it just me or do people want double the price that they wanted last year? Last season I could get lower bowl sideline tickets for 300 or so but this year the same seats are as much as 1200 bucks each. I understand people want to make some money but its ridiculous. Its not like Im going to be doing this all the time so I want good seats but Im not going broke to do it, even shitty seats are crazy priced anyway.

The NFL on Tuesday morning sent an e-mail to about 3,200 pre-1993 players that included an update on some retirement issues. There was some normal business chatter in the e-mail, including news that former New York Giants quarterback Joe Pisarcik is now interim president of the Alumni Association and Jim McMahon won the association's golf tournament. But also in the letter, obtained by me, was a bit of a blockbuster.

The letter included a four-page summary of a recent record-based study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) of all retirees who played in the NFL for at least five seasons from 1959 through 1988.

The main conclusion of the NIOSH study, which it says was commissioned by the union, is that players in the study had a much lower rate of death overall compared to men in the general population. This means, on average, NFL players are actually living longer than men in the general population which contradicts a popular notion that former NFL players live into their mid-50s.

I’ve received a lot of questions from readers about the impact of the Broncos parting ways with general manager Brian Xanders on Monday.

I know the move appeared to come out of the blue, and the fact that a general manager has left the team can result in major change. But allow me to reiterate my thoughts from Monday when the news broke: Nothing will change in Denver.

There will not be any structural or philosophical change. Xanders was not in command of the team, nor did he make major decisions. He was third in charge.

Barely a week after the NFL draft, the Broncos today fired general manager Brian Xanders, according to an NFL source. Xanders was in his fourth year in the position.

Xanders helped spearhead the Broncos' draft in 2011, but executive vice president John Elway took on a more prominent role this year after getting his feet wet in his first year on the job.

Xanders came to the Broncos as assistant general manager in 2008 under head coach Mike Shanahan. He was promoted to general manager the next season and served in that role under head coach Josh McDaniels before working alongside Elway and head coach John Fox last season. Xanders worked 14 years with the Atlanta Falcons in a variety of coaching, player personnel and football operations positions.

I decided to look just at the percentages of QBs taken at #57 or later in the 2nd round or 3rd round (only). I'm not including late round scrubs who never had a chance, many of whom were around for a cup of coffee or spent some time on the developmental squad but never made a start.

I'm not going to argue that Osweiler WILL be a bust because NOBODY can know that. EFX like him and will try and develop him and we'll see.

But according to simple statistics it's a Long-Shot at best. About 5% chance he ever becomes a decent starter (not even elite QB, because that hasn't happened in the last 12 years, but decent starter).

2010

Jimmy Clausen #48
Colt McCoy #85

2009
Pat White #44

2008
Brian Brohme #56
Chad Henne #57

2007
Kevin Kolb #36
Brian Beck #40
Drew Stanton #43
Trent Edwards #92

2006
Kellen Clemmens #49
Tavaris Jackson #64
Charlie Whitehurst #81
Brodie Croyle #85

2005
Charlie Frye #67
Andrew Walther #69
David Greene #85
Kyle Orton #106

2004
Matt Shaub #90

2003
David Ragone #88
Chris Simms #97

2002
Josh McCown #81

2001
Drew Brees #32 (1st pick of the 2nd)
Quincy Carter #53
Marques Tuiaososopo # 59

2000
Giovanni Carmazzi #65
Chris Redmond #75

Drew Brees was the only elite QB drafted in the 2nd round or later in the last 12 years, but he was the #32 pick, basically a first rounder.

Notice that Matt Shaub is the ONLY QB taken at #57 or later who is any good at all. He's not considered an elite QB but he is decent.
And NO, Kyle Orton doesn't count.

So, just looking at STATS, your chances are about 1 in 20 or 5% that Osweiler will ever be any good.

And NO, once again, don't bother arguing that you have confidence in Elway or something equally irrelevant.

He could be good, great or completely worthless. We just don't know at this point.

I'm just pointing out the odds. Vegas is filled with broke losers who bet against the House. Once in a while someone hits the jackpot, that's all.

You should be drafting the best player available (hereafter BPA), regardless of need, goes the story. I reject that thought as being over-generalized, because if you have a bad team, you should be picking to fill roles that will allow you to be competitive.

Seeing as how it's just plain stupid to try to grade the current draft class, I figured it makes sense to go back a couple of drafts.

1 12 (12) Ryan Clady T Boise State
2 11 (42) Eddie Royal WR Virginia Tech
4 9 (108) Kory Lichtensteiger C Bowling Green
4 20 (119) Jack Williams CB Kent State
5 4 (139) Ryan Torain RB Arizona State
5 13 (148) Carlton Powell DT Virginia Tech
6 17 (183) Spencer Larsen OLB Arizona
7 13 (220) Josh Barrett S Arizona State
7 20 (227) Peyton Hillis FB Arkansas

The 2008 Broncos draft class is a solid B+.
The Elite:
Ryan Clady stepped onto the field and was immediately an All-Pro caliber player at his position.
The Steals:
Peyton Hillis had a Pro Bowl caliber season and if he'd remained at Fullback, could've been a solid receiving threat for years. As a 7th round pick, absolute steal.
The Solid Picks:
Eddie Royal had a fantastic rookie season and there was debate over who was better between him and DJax. Obviously, he tailed off after his rookie year but he remained a return threat and played lots of snaps at receiver for several seasons when he wasn't injured. Solid 2nd round pick and expected value.
Lichtensteiger has developed into a starter in a zone blocking system. For a 4th round pick, value here
Spencer Larsen provided value on special teams and started games at linebacker that season. Overachieved for a 6th rounder.
Josh Barrett for a 7th round pick has stuck around in the league as a special teams gunner. A 7th round pick sticking on the roster is the mark of solid drafting.
Ryan Torain has stuck around in this league and started several games. Maybe not for us, but certainly a solid draft pick for a fifth round pick.

The Busts:
Carlton Powell
Jack Williams

Certainly the Broncos could have done a lot worse with this draft and they acquired several quality players.

The 2009 Draft class
•Round One (12)- Knowshon Moreno RB
•Round One (18)- Robert Ayers DE
•Round Two (37)- Alphonso Smith CB
•Round Two (48)- Darcel McBath DB
•Round Two (64)- Richard Quinn TE
•Round Four (114)- David Bruton SS
•Round Four (132)- Seth Olsen OG
•Round Five (141)- Kenny McKinley WR
•Round Six (174)- Tom Brandstater QB
•Round Seven (225) Blake Schlueter C

Obviously, the grade here is an F. The only players here worth anything are Ayers and Bruton. I'm going to give Ayers the benefit of the doubt and say he has a good year next year but we passed on an All Pro in Orakpo to take him.

I don't even want to go pick by pick here because this draft class just makes me want to cry. It wouldn't have been so bad but we TRADED to draft Alphonso Smith and Richard Quinn. There was no excuse for Richard Quinn in the 2nd round because Josh's offense doesn't even use a blocking TE. You're going to trade up to draft another blocking TE in the 2nd round? Really? You trade our franchise quarterback then immediately come out and give us this horrific draft class? This draft class is the reason McDaniels got fired.

Bottom line: On-field production is the only way of grading draft classes.

John Elway and the Broncos take a level-headed mentality into the draft
By Daniel Mohrmann

When Josh McDaniels took his short turn as coach and decision maker of the Denver Broncos, his strategy on draft weekend would put him in the middle of the spotlight. It’s not hard to imagine that his (lack of) eye for talent was one of the primary reasons he was fired so quickly into his head-coaching career.

Broncos fans found themselves frustrated, angry and in disbelief over the moves that McDaniels made. No one can forget the shock that rolled through Radio City Music Hall in 2009 when Roger Goodell announced Knowshon Moreno as Denver’s first pick. And everyone will remember where they were when they heard the news that the Broncos traded back into the first round in 2010 to draft some guy named Tim Tebow. To call McDaniels a “draft whiz” would be a big stretch of the imagination.

When John Elway and John Fox took over after McDaniels was dismissed, there once again seemed to be a buzz around draft time. It more than likely had everything to do with McDaniels’ ability to earn the second overall pick for Denver. The selection of Von Miller came with just as much hype as...

Things That I Learned About the Broncos FO from the 2012 Draft

1. EFX could care less what the draft pundits think, or how they have players rated- Most every player was slated to go lower than where the Broncos...

1. EFX could care less what the draft pundits think, or how they have players rated- Most every player was slated to go lower than where the Broncos took them. They identified thier guys, and went and got them.

2. There are no Broncos insiders left that don't work in Dove Valley. Lammey spent the week talking about how much the Broncos loved Billy Winn, Jerel Worthy, and Lamar Miller. Mike Klis came talked about how the Broncos loved Chris Polk, and offensive lineman in the 2nd, as well as possibly taking a WR high. He also mentioned that there was some talk of moving Franklin inside.

3. The Broncos are going to put resources into repairing our nickel and dime packages. Wolfe is a penetrating, pocket collapsing DT. Jackson is a pass rushing DT that can wreak some havok inside, and play DE on running downs. Both have good length and long arms. Omar Bolden provides a strong physical presence at CB and brings depth to the position. No run stuffing fat bodies were brought in. We passed on all of the shorter squattier DT's.

4. The FO is comfortable with our current receiving core. No WR's or TE's were taken in this draft. Tamme, Dreesen, Decker, and Thomas look to be our go to guys on passing downs.

5. They are willing to give last year's draft class some time to develop. Mays will go into camp as starter at MLB, with Irving backing him up. It looks like Carter will have a chance to lock down the SS spot early with Moore competing with the newly signed vet at FS. Franklin is staying at RT.

6. Character, talent, and motor are of the highest priorities in the draft. Once again, no players were taken that have character questions, and none that were accused of taking plays off. Consistency is important to this FO. I'll have to look, but I'm betting that we have picked up at least 3 more team captains from thier college teams.

Immediate impressions really don't mean shit, but what the hell else are we gonna talk about today? Here's how I feel after watching 3 days of the draft. Keep in mind guys like Lancane and CoachChaz are far more serious about this than I am - these are just my feelings on the matter. Grades are based on what I felt we accomplished with the pick and how I think they rate compared to the players available around them at the time.

2) Wolfe: We got the DT we wanted, with several choices available, and I have no problem with him. I liked him better than Still, not as much as Worthy, but he's a viable second rounder. If we feel like he wouldn't have been there later (or that we HAD TO TAKE OSWEILER) then we needed him at this pick. Great motor, very strong, collapses a pocket, and will make the job of a pass-blocking RB very painful when Doom is coming from one side, Von from the other, and Wolfe right up the middle seam.

Motor is one of my key indicators on a DT and Wolfe has it. I look at him like a Kyle Vanden Bosch mentality - not the fastest guy but he will outwork you to the ball, and has nasty intensity. For our first real DT prospect in what feels like 40 years in the desert, I'll take him. I still wanted another run-stuffer, because that's not what Wolfe is best at, but if we figure we can score enough to take running out of the game early then I hope we can make do with Ty Warren for a season, I guess.

Grade: B

2) Osweiler: I have nothing nice to say about Osweiler. I hope that 4 years from now he's ready to take the reins from Manning, but 2nd round picks are only allowed to sign 4 year contracts now, so we'll owe him a fortune after a few snaps if we believe in him. I'm thinking of Matt Cassel and getting annoyed again. This is why I didn't want to draft a QBOTF this year. Anyway... I hope he's the right guy and not a nepotism pick, and that I'll be thrilled with this pick sometime in 2015. He won't do anything useful for us before then, most likely, so it's a no-value pick til then.

Grade: Incomplete. It's an F if looking at the current value of a raw backup to a QB with a serious injury concern - he shouldn't be our #2 guy, so we spent a 2nd round pick on a #3 roster position, which is horrible. Of course, it's an A if he can Aaron-Rodgers it later. Completely faith-based value, so to me it feels like we traded our 2nd rounder this year for some future pick.

3) Hillman: Felt like a panic pick to me, exactly like a McDaniels draft pick. LaMichael James came off the board faster than we wanted, just as may have happened with the Muscle Hamster, and in order not to get caught without addressing that position of "receiving RB/ 20 touch game-breaker" we jumped up and reached on Hillman. He's a smooth runner and his vision's good. I didn't like what I saw of him against faster defenses, I didn't think he had the extra gear that guys in his position need to display, I think he needs to work on catching passes and taking care of the ball...

He needs work. I don't like moving up for RBs who aren't 3-down guys and need work on the very skills we drafted them for. I hope to be pleasantly surprised by Knowshon's replacement, and at least he's not a first-rounder like No-Show was, but the pick doesn't thrill me. Now having said that, I expect him to turn into Marshall Faulk and give me the finger for a decade. I'll happily accept that.

Grade: C-. I'd have given a C+ for the player, but the trade up was an unnecessary expense IMO, and after all that effort to acquire very little by trading down twice, we spent most of it to get Hillman.

4) Bolden: In the fourth, Bolden is great. He's a smooth accelerator (I laughed when I heard that on a preview, but it's exactly how I'd described him to someone else, dude just starts rolling upfield at increasing speed), love his hips, and IF his knee is right, I'm glad to have him. Finally, a pick I can really appreciate. He could start for us in a year or so if circumstances go his way. Lots of upside.

Grade: B+]

4) Blake: Hardworking backup G/C who can hopefully push Beadles for a starting spot. He's big enough to play either position, and he's a good pick for the slot. We desperately needed OL depth - we had very little last year. A non-sexy but useful pick, and the draft is about addressing needs, not getting the sexiest guys around.
Grade: B-

5) Jackson: The Broncos really want pash-rushing D-linemen. I'm okay with that. Jackson's a rotational guy who could play inside on 3rd and long, outside to rush the passer earlier. Versatile. Yes, that can also be code for "not exceptional anywhere" but it's the 5th round. He's not the run-stopper we need, but I guess Joe Mays can stop all inside runners, right? He's raw, but could be a much better player in 2 years time, and most DL are 2-3 year projects in my book. Tons of upside.

Grade: B

6) Trevathan: I actually like him quite a bit, but I'm partial to UK linebackers, my boy Woodyard chief among em. Hard worker, good tackler, reads plays well and HAS to because he's not real fleet-of-foot or explosive, and he's certainly not big. Nice backup / ST guy, and we can always use LBs.

Grade: B-

Draft rating: B- / C+. Not especially feeling it. Glad to had a DT in the fold, and I like Bolden, but it feels to me like this:

- Pass-rushing DT
- backup outside CB with with #2 potential
- backup OG/C
- project DT/DE with good upside
- situational pass-catching RB, hopeful future starter
- Special teamer / backup LB
- traded 2nd round pick for hopeful 2015 starting QB (Osweiler)

Looking around at other (non-Raiders) teams, do you really feel like we smoked this draft? Would you take our draft over Cincy's, or Philly's, or Pittsburgh's, or...

Osweiler's dragging the grade down for me, since he's not Aaron Rodgers IMO and we could have had ANY of these players at that slot: DE Curry, OT Osmele, RB James or WR Randle, all of whom would help us far more in the Peyton Manning era than Osweiler. If we'd drafted a QB later I wouldn't be bothered as much, but 2nd rounders should be able to start now, and we are not a stacked team like GB was when they took Rodgers. It hurts the grade I give em - it won't some other people's.

We added players to both lines, which is good. I've been begging for more trench warriors. We added a much-needed corner and an attempt at a pass-catching runner. We did not add WR help, so those guys had better be ready to go. Our LBs are our LBs, with an extra backup thrown in. No workhorse RB.

Not a sexy draft, but a draft for depth. Okay. But with some of the great talents in this draft I would have liked to feel like we came away with at least one of em. Drafting a bunch of pro players will be a good outcome for this draft.

On a team neeeding impact guys, I guess I need to hope that Wolfe and Bolden bring the wood. And I need for Xanders and his staff's evaluation of some of these other guys to be more correct than my amateur first impressions. Hillman by himself could swing this draft to being very good if he can play a lot and make an impact, and Osweiler in a few years could make it great when he hops off the bench and leads us to the Super Bowl, Brady-style.

But for now, it's a bit of a yawner. I'm not throwing anything. It doesn't piss me off. It doesn't really move me in any significant way. Bring on training camp.

The waiting game during an NFL Draft day can be cruel.

Just ask the Broncos' first pick, former University of Cincinnati defensive tackle Derek Wolfe who was voted 2011 Big East Conference co-defensive player of the year.

During the months leading to the draft, Wolfe (6-foot-5, 295 pounds) had a lot of contact with Baltimore coaches and management. When the Ravens' second-round pick came up Friday night, Wolfe was sure his phone would ring and his name would flash on the TV screen.

But with the fourth pick of the second round, Baltimore instead chose Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw.

With all the vitriol on the boards over Denver's draft thus far, I say let's have a little fun (without being ***holes) let's see who can guess Denver's final four draft picks...

Denver's remaining picks are:

101st Overall, 6th in the Fourth Round

108th Overall, 13th in the Fourth Round

137th Overall, 2nd in the Fifth Round

188th Overall, 18th in the Sixth Round

__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ _____

My guess is -

101st Overall: Levy Adcock, Offensive Lineman, Texas

108th Overall: DaJohn Harris, Defensive Tackle, Southern California

137th Overall: Dwight Jones, Wide Receiver, North Carolina

188th Overall: Keith Tandy, Cornerback, West Virginia

After reading the transcript from John Elway’s press briefing Thursday night, it is clear to see why the Broncos traded down twice and eventually out of the first round.

They didn’t think anybody was worthy of a first-round pick where they were picking and they wanted to add picks. Denver now has the No. 36 pick in the second round and added No. 101, in the fourth round. Denver has two picks in the second round, one in the third round and three in the fourth round. I would be surprised if the Broncos don’t try to add another third-round pick and get four picks on Friday.

I think Denver decided to trade down once defensive tackles Dontari Poe, Fletcher Cox and Michael Brockers were off the board by the 14th pick. Denver originally had the No. 25 pick, then traded to No. 31 before going to No. 36.

Ok can we get this out of the way once and for all? I like many others was pissed when I saw us trading back for 4th rounders and position, but there is a simple truth in any market. Value is established by comparable sales ie trades and value is ultimately determined by the buyer not the seller. Last night the value of trading back was established early in the process. You watched multiple teams move back from very high slots in the 1st for 4th rounders. We can complain about it all we like, but the market dictated the value of the picks last night. Don't like it? It doesn't matter it's freshman level economics. And would someone please torch the antiquated pick value chart? If you choose to use said chart as the basis for your argument, your point is already invalid as the new cba has made it irrelevant.

Wanna complain about the picks when they're made? fine, but if there was no one at our slot that we loved and we gained more currency to move around on days two and three by moving out of said slot then mission effing accomplished. As John said. The draft is deep but not at all top heavy, hence the picks in the 2nd third and 4th may hold more value and they don't get guaranteed money

We have the 4th pick of round 2. DT is the obvious pick, right??? Well after pick #30 I may have agreed. However, since Wilson and Martin went bye bye, we may need to grab Lamar Miller while we can. A LOT of DTs would have to be drafted for us to NOT get one at 57.

Also, I still like the idea of grabbing another OLB. W/ Upshaw still around, I'd be giddy if we grabbed him.

Here's an article from today's Post that says:

Quote:

Somewhere, no doubt in proximity to a spotlight, Tim Tebow is giggling. The No. 25 draft pick was Tebow's parting gift to the Broncos. . . . .

If not for Tebow, the Broncos may have been picking in the top five for a second consecutive year. They may have been picking closer to 6:30 p.m. They may have been in position to draft another Von Miller.

This is pure idiocy from several levels:

#1 -- I doubt the Broncos would have been picking in the top 5 and in any case, there aren't that many really great prospects in this year's draft.

Last year there was Dareus, Miller and Patrick Peterson available in the top 5. This year there's not ONE player of that caliber. Claiborne is the top defender and probably the ONLY defensive player to go in the top 5.

The rest will be 2 QBs, a RB and WR. Need I mention that it's highly hazardous to take a RB or WR with a top 5 pick? Or top 10 pick for that matter.

It's well documented that drafting a WR in the top 10 is more likely to result in a wasted pick or mediocre player than in getting an elite WR. Just look at Brandon Marshall coming out of the 4th round for instance. Happens all the time at WR that 2nd through 4th rounders out perform top 10 picks at WR.

Fletcher Cox might be the top DT, but is he really worth an elite pick? Opinion is divided on this. His career wasn't that great until the later part of last season and he could be a better run defender.

In short, he doesn't compare favorably as a prospect with Marcel Dareus, who was clearly without any weaknesses.

This year is a year with a lot of depth, but few elite players and even fewer on defense.

This is a good year to have a later round pick.

Second, it's doubtful that Peyton Manning would have signed with a 5-11 team. We could still be stuck with Tim Tebow.

And for all you Teboners still out there -- nobody ELSE in the NFL wants Tebow as a starter either. Outside of NY there wasn't even a market for him. :coffee:

Personally, I don't like Tebow either as a player or as a person. But, to say that he's laughing at the Broncos for getting them such a bad pick or that they could have drafted "another Von Miller" is pure stupidity. :coffee:

Today's question about the Broncos comes from Mike Shields in Torrington, Wy.

Q: I would like to see the Broncos trade out of the first round in the draft, perhaps getting the Colts' pick near the top of the second round. Any chance of that happening?

A: The Broncos are willing to trade out of the first round if they can strike a deal that benefits them. "Preferably, we'd like to go back," John Elway, the team's executive vice president of football operations, said this week.

On this year's draft board, the players listed in the bottom third of the first round will have grades similar to the players listed in the top 10 of the second round. So if you're the Broncos, there is value in trading out of the first round as long as you land near the top of the second round.

Will manning make the list even if he didnt play? And if so... is that wrong? I think manning should be at least top 20 because of the Colts Record.
Second, Forum Runner app

BroncosForums is now listed in the Forum Runner app. This is currently a more full featured application than the official vBulletin app. The read only app is free, the fully functional app is $1.99 (the money goes to Forum Runner, not BroncosForums.com). This is the mobile app I personally use.

After installing the app, you run it and then choose the option to search for a forum and enter Broncos Forums. You can then save it as a favorite to access it quickly in the future.

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...id.forumrunner

Forum Runner says that they will release Blackberry and Windows Phone apps in the future.

Third, BroncosForums mobile site/style

You can switch to the mobile view, which is more streamlined and loads faster on your mobile device. To switch to the mobile style, go to the very bottom left of any page on BroncosForums.com and choose the "Default Mobile Style" from the drop down box.

Tired of hearing all the defensive specialist on here talk about how bad our DTs were last year I decided to look it up. And I was surprised to find that 19 of the 32 teams gave up more yards per rushing attempt than the Broncos. And that only 5 other teams faced more rushing attempts per game. Yes, the Broncos ranked 22 overall in rushing defense but most of that can be simply because our offense had so many 3 and outs. The Defense still only gave up 11 rushing TDs during the 16 game regular season. Next year with Manning we will probably be spending more time on offense and playing with a lead. So drafting a DT savior really won't make a difference because DTs don't cover wide open TE's in the middle of the field. Drafting a Steve Atwater type big hitting SS and a RB with speed and power is much more important. It also wouldn't hurt to have a speedster capable of hauling in few deep balls now that we have a guy that isn't afraid to let it rip a couple times a game. Lets give the guys that actually make the decisions a little more respect and trust that they know what they're doing. And just ZIP IT about the DT position!

Dawkins entered the room to thank everyone in it for the opportunity to play in Denver, and there were lots of smiles, hugs, laughs and some heartfelt interaction.
Before he left the room, however, Owner/CEO Pat Bowlen, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway, Head Coach John Fox, General Manager Brian Xanders and the rest of the war room had a surprise for Dawkins as well.

I am of the opinion that DT could be a top 5 WR in every category this year.

He is huge, fast and very hard to bring down. If DT can stay healthy he is a Megatron type of match up nightmare. Having a QB like Manning coupled with the fact that no one is double covering him yet will make this year a break out of epic proportions. Mark my words this guy is a superstar in the making. His only weakness is that he doesn't possess the B.Lloyd type of hands. He has dropped more than a few. Some of this is due to Tebow not throwing the easiest balls to catch at times so PM should help that alot.

Unlike most of the country I think that the DB WRs are a very good group and will surprise alot of people this year. Decker will also make a nice living off of DTs leftovers. PM spreads it around pretty good but IMO he has not yet had a WR of DTs caliber. Thats right, I think he (if he stays healthy) is better than Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne. He's young and needs to work on the drops but he MANHANDLES smaller CBs and really is a huge match up problem. If PM gets an advantage like that where they have to double DT then its all over but the crying... that O will be unstoppable... Big BIG advantage for PM.

On the down side all of this depends on PMs arm strength recovering and his staying healthy. I have my doubts on that. Getting PM and ditching Tebow was a HUGE risk with a hell of an upside and an equally dramatic downside. One way or another its going to be spectacular to watch... either a jackpot/possibly championship success or a utterly epic failure of historic proportions that will leave the fan base reeling and pissed off McDanials style...

As I have said about Tebow I don't know if most of the DB fanbase even knows what they have in him yet. The injuries have something to do with that... there has been some bitterness about him being hurt so much. But if it goes well look for DT to become a supernova type star with gaudy numbers this year.

Beast.

This season, the team will hand out iPads that feature the week's game plan, scouting reports, video clips and other relevant data.
After his playing days, Easterling started to suffer the consequences of the years of bruising hits, his wife said. He suffered from depression and insomnia, and as his dementia progressed, he lost the ability to focus, organize his thoughts and relate to people, she said.

"It's been a progression over the last 20 years," she said. "It's very sad to see."

"Half the time the player puts themselves back in the game, and they don't know what kind of impact it has," she said. "Somehow this has got to be stopped. It's destroying people's lives."

Former Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson also committed suicide a year ago, shooting himself in the chest after having made arrangements to donate his brain to the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University's School of Medicine. A researcher determined Duerson suffered from a "moderately advanced" case of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The study indicated the damage to Duerson's brain affected his judgment, inhibition, impulse control, mood and memory.

The Broncos won a playoff game with a run-first quarterback, but that wasn’t the identity John Elway and John Fox wanted for their football team. Cutting ties with last year’s offensive formula, the Broncos believe their future is now following the acquisition of Peyton Manning. They head to next week’s draft trying to upgrade around him.

Defensive tackle: Denver is shorthanded on the interior defensive line after losing a bidding war with the Saints for Brodrick Bunkley. Left behind are injury-plagued 31-year-old Ty Warren, 33-year-old Justin Bannan, and journeyman Kevin Vickerson, who’s only still on the roster because he took a pay cut. The Broncos seem to be a lock to invest an early-round draft pick on a defensive tackle. Penn State’s Devon Still would be a logical fit at No. 25 overall.
Today's question about the Broncos comes from Danno in Lakewood:

Q: Could you tell me if the Broncos have considered Alameda Ta'amu from Washington? He was in CU's backfield all day last season. He could be there in the second, and possibly, the third round.

A: Danno, Ta'amu is certainly on the Broncos' radar at defensive tackle. In fact, he's just the kind of player who will be available after the first round in this draft and why the Broncos won't feel compelled to take a defensive tackle with their opening pick — at No. 25 — if a defensive tackle is not the highest-rated player still on their board at that point.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Broncos defensive players are meeting their new defensive coordinator this week, and on Monday, linebacker Von Miller joked that Del Rio was “nicer than I thought.” On Thursday, linebacker Joe Mays tempered that by saying he expects Del Rio’s personality to change once he’s on the field coaching the players.

“Just for now,” Mays laughed about Miller’s take on Del Rio. “Just for now, until we step out on that field, I'm pretty sure it's going to be a lot different. But I'm just looking forward to it. Everyone's excited about the Peyton Manning addition. I'm more excited about Jack Del Rio.”

Does Buffalo take him at 10? Zona at 13? If not, I really don't see a landing spot for him. Until Denver. Now I know Cleveland could take him at 22, but passing on him at 4 may be an indication that they are willing to give Colt McCoy some weapons and another year. With all the QBs we've been looking at, does EFX dare take this kid if he experiences a Rodgers/Quinn type fall?

My guy is Courtney Upshaw. I've seen him go anywhere between 12 and 20, but only once so late as 25. I know that RB and DT seem to be the likeliest options (although Lammey says Kirkpatrick is a lock if he lasts to us), but I'd stray from that for a guy like Upshaw.

Hey guys, I've been working on a site that displays Broncos related tweets and organizes them based on type (i.e. players, writers, bloggers). I have plenty of players and enough bloggers, but I'm struggling with finding enough good quality writers.

Do you guys happen to know any good writers I should add? I'm looking for guys that are good at breaking news or getting creditable rumors out. Not looking so much for the guys who like to talk about non-football or their personal life.

The only good writers I've found so far are:

@espn_afcwest
@markkiszla
@mikeklis
@postbroncos
@mhr_kaptainkirk
@denversportnews
@fs3142

The site can be found here if you want to check it out or see how the writers I have work currently: http://www.nfltweeter.com/broncos I'd appreciate any feedback on the site as well.

Any other writers besides the ones I'm using that you guys feel are worth adding?

Thanks again!

With players in the building for voluntary workouts, the newly signed Broncos have worked with the team’s equipment staff to select numbers.

The only player from last year’s roster to change jersey numbers is wide receiver Mark Dell, who will go from 83 to 15. Wide receiver Brandon Stokley and defensive tackle Justin Bannan will wear the same numbers they did when they last played for the team — 14 and 97, respectively. Tight end Jacob Tamme and safety Mike Adams have yet to be assigned a number.

Below are the Broncos’ 2012 free agent acquisitions and the numbers they will wear in 2012:

WR Tyler Grisham – 13
WR Brandon Stokley – 14
QB Caleb Hanie – 16
WR Andre Caldwell – 17
QB Peyton Manning – 18
CB Tracy Porter – 29
CB Ramzee Robinson – 38
LB Cyril Obiozor – 54
DT Ben Garland – 63
G C.J. Davis – 71
TE Joel Dreessen – 81
WR Jason Hill – 83

This article in today's Post analyzes some of Denver's recent draft picks and the result isn't pretty:
NFL teams identify rounds one, two and three as "starter" rounds. And in this segment, the Broncos have failed too many times going back to the 2001 season. Next week, the Broncos have the No. 25 pick in the first round. They need to find a player the caliber of D.J. Williams, not Jarvis Moss or Willie Middlebrooks.

The second round has been to the Broncos what a green-side bunker is to a golfer's approach — hazardous. The Broncos' spectacular second-round whiff under the direction of Josh McDaniels in 2009 — Alphonso Smith (strike one!), Darcel McBath (strike two!) and Richard Quinn (strike three!) — is a major reason Manning's new supporting cast is not as strong as it could be.

This article really grossly OVER-Estimates Denver's success in drafting the last 5 or 6 years and gives passing grades to some Denver players who don't remotely deserve it like Rahim Moore.

The Broncos have had better luck in the third round, thanks to the recent hits of center J.D. Walton and wide receiver Eric Decker.

Walton is certainly not a "hit" yet, if he's ever going to be. He's probably among the worst starting C's in the NFL and they tried to upgrade his position by signing Jeff Saturday to start ahead of him, but failed when another team offered more money.

Here's their analysis:

1st round: They rate Von Miller and Clady as "very good." Well, Clady WAS good, but he's struggled since his injury and would be considered a mediocre LT at this point. Hopefully he can recover his form this season. Von Miller has had a great first year and should improve.

For some reason they lump in first round "disappointments" with total BUSTS: Jarvis Moss with Knowshon Moreno. If Moreno fails to make the team or play a significant backup role this season, then he's a "Bust", but otherwise he's a "disappointment" for a former first rounder. Moss was simply a totally wasted pick, which is a different matter. Let's not mix up the two ideas.

They list Robert Ayers and Jay Cutler as "OK". Cutler is certainly a LOT better than "OK" since he was a pro-bowl player in Denver and led his Bears team to the NFL Championship game and had the Bears headed to a potential playoff game again prior to his injury. It's not his fault that McMoron decided to try and run him out of town and trade for the incomparable Matt Cassel. Ayers is barely average.

And both Ayers and "No-Show" were wasted picks already IF we take into account who they could have drafted instead: Brian Orakpo and Clay Matthews, but NOT if we simply look at their play without considering alternatives.

Tebow was a "disappointment" if you expect your QB to last more than 2 seasons as a starter and to learn to throw accurate passes. He might well become a "good" player in NY of course if he supplants Mark Sanchez and ever learns to throw a forward pass. So, he probably deserves an "OK" rating, unless you consider the Broncos wasted three draft picks to move up to draft him. On the other hand, giving a 3rd round pick to McMoron is like giving money to a crack whore. You might as well just burn it right now and save yourself the trouble.

Second round

They rate RB Clinton Portis as "very good" but he didn't last long enough in Denver to claim that role, unless you consider getting Champ Bailey for him in trade. I guess he was "very good trade bait."

I'd say Orlando Franklin and Zane Beadles are "OK" but nothing better at this point. Beadles has been a major disappointment for the 2nd G taken in the draft. He was supposed to become an impact player (which is the only reason you draft a G in the 2nd round and not convert an OT to G) and he's barely good enough to start at all.

And Walton is badly in need of either getting his act together or being replaced.

It's not hard to spot the 2nd round total BUSTS:

Anyway, an interesting read.

Let's fast forward to next Thursday, opening night of the NFL draft. With the Indianapolis Colts on the clock, time ticking away, the speakers crackle to life: "The pick ... is in."

Before we hear a peep from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, the camera cuts to Andrew Luck, huddled over a phone, smiling from ear to ear.

In this case, nobody is surprised, but as we move through the first round, these tip-offs affect the drama of the event.

After Alabama’s Trent Richardson, who figures to go in the top 10 picks of next week’s draft, somewhere in the top five running backs on the Broncos’ draft board are Boise State’s Doug Martin and Washington’s Chris Polk.

As you can see by the chart below, Polk compares favorably to Richardson in terms of production. Polk was listed at 222 pounds at Washington but with so much emphasis on the 40-yard dash leading up to the draft, he weighed in at 215 at the scouting combine and 212 at his Pro Day.
