ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Broncos on Monday added three more players to the practice squad -- running back Bruce Hall, offensive lineman Jeff Byers and defensive lineman Lionel Dotson -- filling the eight-player roster.

Hall spent the preseason with the Broncos, leading the team with 30 carries. He picked up 88 yards on the ground, tacking on 12 receptions for 73 yards through the air.

The running back spent the majority of his first two NFL seasons on the Buffalo Bills' practice squad. He spent the final game of the 2008 season on Buffalo's active roster.

Byers, a Colorado native, was signed as a college free agent by the Seattle Seahawks before his move to the Broncos. He played in three preseason games with Seattle.

The former Loveland High School star spent his college career at USC, where he started four games late in the season and played in all 13 as a freshman, when the Trojans won the BCS National Championship. He then missed the 2005 and 2006 seasons with injuries, but bounced back and started the final 39 games of his career after being granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA.

Having played both guard and center for the Trojans, Byers said at the combine that he hopes his versatility can play into his success in the NFL.

"I think I'm definitely a center first, then a guard," said the rookie, who will wear No. 63. "Definitely a swing guy, though, no question. I can play all three interior positions and that's valuable. I'll go wherever they want me."

Dotson has played in four games in his two seasons in the league, and the defensive lineman made three tackles as a reserve with the Dolphins.

He played in all four preseason games with Miami this year, making three tackles.

The former seventh-round pick played his college football at the University of Arizona, where he started 32 of 40 career games. He accumulated 121 tackles, 10.5 sacks, 14.5 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and four pass breakups. He earned second-team All-Pac 10 honors as a senior.

Dotson will wear No. 90.

Denver Broncos The offensive line bears watching Sunday at Jacksonville. All-Pro LT Ryan Clady was back for a couple series in the preseason finale but has been out all offseason and showed some rust. RT Ryan Harris turned an ankle in that game and might be hobbled a bit. No matter whether Zane Beadles, or more likely, Stanley Daniels, starts at left guard, that player will be flanked by rookie C J.D. Walton, meaning two players will be taking their first regular-season snaps.
2. The weekly champion will receive a signature made by MasterShake.
3. The 3rd place season total finisher will receive a $20 gift certificate to Amazon.com or Paypal payment.

Summery of rules:
Pick the winner of every game.
You will receive 1 point for every correct pick.
MNF score prediction will be used as a tiebreaker. If there are two games on Monday, the latter of the two will be used for the tiebreaker. (Tiebreaker explanation)
A Bonus point will be awarded for predicting the exact points the Broncos or their rival will score.
If you've played the pick 'em previously and have since changed your username, please indicate in your post who you were previously.

*** Important ***

When posting your picks:
List only the winner of each game. If you list both teams, your picks will not be counted.
Keep the order in which the games are listed.
Put the score next to the MNF and the Broncos games only.
The Broncos game and MNF game will always be the last two games liste, due to how the spreadsheet is constructed.Any post or post-edit after the first kickoff will receive an automatic DQF

If you missed Thursday’s game you can still make your picks on the remaining games as long as you get the picks in before the games start on Sunday.

If this is the case, do not post a pick for Thursday’s game. I do not want to have to check the post date on everyone’s picks. If I find a post that has been made after Thursday’s game with a prediction for the winning team that post will be DQ and none of the picks will count.

This is all for fun guys/gals but please follow these rules. If you type your picks different then what I have on the list I have to retype them all. I have the spreadsheet set to count each members picks. It will not count the picks if they are written in different then what I have in the spreadsheet. It will not count the picks if they are in a different order then they are in spreadsheet. If you type JAX instead of JAC sometimes I type in JAX and it will not count the pick. then I have to go back through everything to find the error :D

When I make my picks I Quote the picks post, then delete all the teams I don't think will win. Then I delete everything except my picks. Maybe this will work for you?

Like last year, Carol has offered to keep an eye on people's picks and send them an MHS message or PM if they missed any. Hopefully, this will help keep any silly mistakes from costing people a win.

IMPORTANT: In the past, some people have not followed the format rules posted above. It is critical that you use the team abbreviations EXACTLY as they are listed below. Do not type out the full name. Do not color code the pics. Do not list two teams, including when you must pick the score. List ONLY the team you are picking, and for game with scores, enter the score of the winning team first (example: DEN 24 - 7). Your help in this will be greatly appreciated.

Also, as the rules state that any post in this thread or edit after first kickoff will result in a DNQ, the mods or I will do our best to lock this thread right after the first games kickoff, so I will not have to try and catch post-kickoff edits.

IMPORTANT: Read the important notes above. IMPORTANT
http://content.usatoday.com/communit...deh-on-board/1

The Baltimore Ravens traded WR Mark Clayton to the St. Louis Rams on Monday, hours after agreeing to a deal with free-agent WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Clayton, a first-round pick in 2005, was sent to St. Louis with an undisclosed draft pick for a similarly-undisclosed draft pick.

He will join a depleted Rams receiving corps that lost No. 1 option Donnie Avery to a torn ACL in late August. Clayton, 28, never achieved a 1,000-yard receiving season with the Ravens.

He'll join a receiving unit catching passes from No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford.

Clayton was expendable in Baltimore, which is suddenly flush with receivers with Anquan Boldin, Houshmandzadeh, Derrick Mason and Donte' Stallworth (who is out for several weeks with a foot injury).

With the 53-man roster in place (for now), several players who made the cut have opted to change their jersey numbers for the start of the regular season.

The changes:

- CB Syd’Quan Thompson will wear No. 22. (He was No. 43 in camp, when 22 belonged to Alphonso Smith.)

- LB Joe Mays has switched to No. 51 from No. 96. (Akin Ayodele wore No. 51 in the preseason until he was cut).

Here are the jersey numbers for the new Broncos:

- RB Andre Brown will wear No. 26.

- TE Dan Gronkowski will wear No. 82.

- OL Chris Clark will wear No. 75.

Two practice squad players have also changed their numbers: LB Kevin Alexander is now No. 58 (from No. 48) and LB Worrell Williams is No. 54 (from No. 49).

Plan your jersey purchases accordingly. (Oh, who am I kidding. I know you all have only purchased No. 15s).
In a surprise move, the Baltimore Ravens reached agreement with former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh on a one-year, $855,000 deal, according to league sources.

AFC North blog

ESPN.com's James Walker writes about all things AFC North in his division blog.
• Blog network: NFL Nation

Seattle still owes Houshmandzadeh $6.15 million, meaning the receiver will make a total of $7 million this season.
Houshmandzadeh had multiple opportunities but ultimately decided to join a team in the same division as the team that drafted him -- the Cincinnati Bengals.

Houshmandzadeh now will join a stable of wide receivers that includes Anquan Boldin, Derrick Mason and Donte' Stallworth.
Stallworth, however, broke his foot in the preseason and is expected to return after the Ravens' bye week in late October.

Houshmandzadeh, the Seahawks' leading receiver last season, signed a $40 million, five-year deal with Seattle before the 2009 season. But he came to Seattle under a different regime with Jim Mora as coach and Tim Ruskell the general manager. Both Mora and Ruskell were gone after Seattle went 5-11 last season and replaced by new coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider.

Last season, Houshmandzadeh caught 79 passes for 911 yards and three touchdowns, his fewest receptions since 2005 and his fewest touchdowns since 2002.

Baltimore now will have to shed one player from its roster.
Q&A: Broncos' Decker shows signs of being productive immediately

By Jeff Legwold
The Denver Post

Posted: 09/06/2010 01:00:00 AM MDT

Welcome back. Today's question comes from Lee Thompson in Castle Rock:

Q: I'm frustrated. It seems to me that Eric Decker gets no respect compared to Matt Willis. And the Denver Post keeps talking up Demaryius Thomas, who has yet to make a catch. What's the deal?

A: Lee, you led the way with a few folks checking in this weekend about Decker, a rookie the Broncos selected in the third round of this past April's draft.

Decker closed out the preseason with a flourish with 10 receptions for 114 yards against the Vikings' reserves Thursday night. He projects to get most of his playing time in the slot — the inside receiver when the Broncos use three or four in the formation.

He'll also likely get some plays here and there on the outside as well. He led the Broncos in catches in the preseason with 16, while Willis led the team in yards receiving (263) and yards per catch (20.2).

Both guys will get plenty of respect if they put up the numbers in the regular season. Thomas gets a lot of attention because he was the team's No. 1 pick in the last draft, so generally as we cover the beat we have to tell folks why he is or isn't playing.

And he hasn't played much, because he's had some difficulties with the left foot he also fractured in the weeks leading up to the draft. He had surgery to repair it.

He returned to practice early on in training camp but has appeared in just one full team workout since Aug. 7, when he reinjured the foot in the Broncos' practice at Invesco Field at Mile High.

If the Broncos get too deep into the season and he still doesn't have a catch, then there may be some legitimate concern about how his foot will hold up over the long haul.

Decker's draft status was affected by his foot surgery during his senior season at Minnesota. The Broncos hope he can be a physical presence in the offense — he made plenty of tough catches in traffic for the Gophers.

He showed a nice feel in the middle of the field against the Vikings on Thursday night, moving himself into the open spaces in the coverages.

Those skills usually translate to a guy who can be productive quickly. It shows his understanding of the game and his willingness to keep working on a play to get the ball.

Maybe instead of putting him in the slot to take away reception opportunities for Royal they'll move either Gaffney or Lloyd out of the starting line up. :heh:

Ryan Clady or Jabar Gaffney
Brian Dawkins
NEW YORK—NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced plans Monday to expand the 2011-2012 football season from the usual 16 games to as many as it takes for Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis to suffer a career-ending injury. "We know what millions of loyal football fans really want to see: more games, and Ray Lewis suffering a catastrophic head or knee injury that keeps him off the field forever, so this is just a total win-win," said Goodell, adding that if necessary, the Ravens would play 15 games in a row against the Saints and their top-ranked offensive line. "Eighteen, 20, 30 games—hell, we'll play 50 games if [Lewis] still has any sensation from the waist down whatsoever." League officials added that if the 14-year veteran were somehow still standing after 72 games, they would remain open to backing over him with a truck and starting the playoffs the following week.
NEW YORK (AP)—Darrelle Revis(notes) and the New York Jets have agreed to a new contract, ending the All-Pro cornerback’s holdout a week before the team’s season opener.

The team announced the agreement in principle early Monday morning, but released no contract terms.

Revis’ holdout began Aug. 1, when the team reported for training camp in Cortland. He was scheduled to make $1 million in the fourth year of his six-year rookie deal, but has said he wants to become the league’s highest-paid cornerback.

The Daily News reported Sunday night that coach Rex Ryan flew to Revis’ home in South Florida over the weekend to try to help get a deal done.

The Jets open their season next Monday night at home against Baltimore.

Brown, Clark Join Roster
By Eric Detweiler

The Broncos stayed busy on Sunday, adding a pair of players to the 53-man roster and five more to the practice squad.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Exactly a week before their regular season opener in Jacksonville, the Broncos continued to tinker with their roster on Sunday. They were assigned a pair off waivers -- adding running back Andre Brown from the New York Giants and offensive lineman Chris Clark from Minnesota.

The team also waived Baraka Atkins and Bruce Hall and added five players to its practice squad. The players who joined the practice squad are Kevin Alexander, Britt Davis, Riar Geer, Kyle McCarthy and Worrell Williams.

Brown, a fourth-round pick out N.C. State in 2009, led the Giants in rushing this preseason with 95 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, despite missing the team's preseason finale because of injury. He also led the team in kick return yards, picking up 120 return yards on seven attempts. The 6-foot, 224-pounder missed his entire rookie year due to a ruptured Achilles' tendon suffered last August.

The Broncos will carry five backs into the season-opener -- Brown, Knowshon Moreno, Correll Buckhalter, Lance Ball and fullback Spencer Larsen. Buckhalter and Moreno, who combined for nearly 1,600 yards last season, both recently returned to the practice field after being injured on the first day of training camp.

The team also brought in Clark to boost the offensive line. He played in three preseason games with the Vikings, including Thursday's finale against the Broncos. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008, the 6-foot-5, 315-pound offensive lineman spent the last two seasons on Minnesota's practice squad.

To make room on the 53-man roster, the Broncos waived Atkins and Hall, who both joined the squad as free agents this offseason. Atkins, a fourth-year player from Miami, competed for time at outside linebacker throughout the preseason, notching a sack in the preseason opener against Cincinnati. Hall, who spent the last two seasons on Buffalo's practice squad, saw his most extensive playing time of the preseason in Thursday's finale, finishing with 15 carries for 33 yards and five catches for 34 yards.

After a busy weekend of trimming the roster in front of Saturday's deadline to cut down to 53 players, the Broncos were able to bring back five players who were waived on Saturday to join the practice squad.

Alexander, who signed as a college free agent out of Clemson in April, earned reps with the first-team defense during summer OTAs and continued to impress through the preseason while competing as an outside linebacker.

Davis, a first-year wide receiver from Northern Illinois, signed as a free agent on August 5 and caught 4 passes for 63 yards in the preseason, including a 33-yarder from Tim Tebow in the preseason opener. The 23-year-old spent part of last season on the Jets practice squad.

Geer, a tight end, caught one pass for 6 yards in the preseason. The college free agent from Colorado was an All-Big 12 Conference selection in 2009.

McCarthy saw extensive action at safety throughout the preseason, notching 10 tackles, including a preseason-high four in Thursday's finale. The Notre Dame product led the Fighting Irish in tackles and interceptions in 2009.

Williams, the brother of linebacker D.J. Williams, joined the squad late in the preseason and made an impact with a pair of tackles in each of the last two preseason games, despite being new to the system. The Cal product competed in the UFL last season.

After Sunday's moves, the Broncos have up to three spots remaining on their practice squad.

When the Jets and Titans clash on Monday Night Football next week, there's a good chance, the Jets will do so with Darrelle Revis on the field. The All-Pro contract has reportedly ending his holdout and is heading to New York to finalize a new contract, ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting. Jets head coach Rex Ryan was reportedly visiting Revis this weekend in Florida, trying to come to terms on a new deal. They were apparently successful, and if Revis is to sign an extension with the Jets, it will end a five-week holdout for the cornerback.

Source: Kraig Urbik was in demand

Cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend, offensive guard Kraig Urbik(notes) was a popular man today.

The former third-round draft pick from Wisconsin was awarded to the Buffalo Bills off waivers, but they weren't the only team that wanted him.

According to a league source with knowledge of the situation, four other teams put in claims: the Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets.

The Bills had the worst record last year, though, so they got dibs.

Urbik spent last season with the Steelers and was inactive for each game. The 6-foot-5, 323-pounder started 50 games for the Badgers, earning All-Big Ten Conference honors in 2007 and 2008.

Shaping Broncos' roster creates bunch of dead money
By making moves involving Jarvis Green, Brandon Stokley and Alphonso Smith, Denver squanders about $6 million.
By Mike Klis
The Denver Post
Posted: 09/05/2010 01:00:00 AM MDTUpdated: 09/05/2010 06:46:52 PM MDT

Coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Brian Xanders admitted their own mistakes Saturday in making final cuts to the Broncos' roster. Now, if the Broncos' football operation bosses can do something about their initial player evaluation process.

McDaniels and Xanders set the 53-man roster while dumping an armored truck worth of dead money in their wake.

Among the more notable player moves were the release of defensive end Jarvis Green, who will collect $3.255 million without ever stepping on the field for the Broncos, and Marquez Branson, who had been the team's top receiving tight end through the offseason and preseason.

Popular and productive receiver Brandon Stokley was placed on injured reserve until a settlement terminates his contract, which has already paid him $600,000 in bonuses this year.

"It's hard to make it as a backup slot receiver," Stokley said. "I think that was the main thing. And one that doesn't play special teams. So I think all that added up to me being released."

The team also released backup linebacker and special-teams standout Darrell Reid, whose offseason knee surgery made him a candidate for the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, and guard Seth Olsen, a fourth-round pick in 2009.

And then there was the most startling admission of all, that giving up a future first-round draft pick (which turned out to be Seattle safety Earl Thomas at No. 14 overall this year) for cornerback Alphonso Smith a year ago was an unfortunate error in judgment.

Smith, who received a $2.15 million signing bonus as the No. 37 overall selection in the 2009 draft, was traded to Detroit in exchange for Dan Gronkowski, a seventh-round pick in the same draft who will replace the disappointing Branson as the Broncos' new receiving tight end.

The teams also traded undisclosed draft picks.

The one-day total of wasted money: $6.01 million on Green, Smith and Stokley.

"It's a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately business," Stokley said. "You have to prove yourself every year. Different circumstances happen, and sometimes what happens is out of your control."

Then again, the Broncos saved $1.74 million by cutting Reid and the bulk of the $1.4 million salary owed to Stokley, who missed the final three preseason games with a groin injury.

Not that money was anything more than an afterthought when it came time to setting the roster. McDaniels and Xanders sent the message that performance, not financial considerations, wins roster spots.

Just ask Green. The former New England Patriot was one of the Broncos' "big three" free-agent defensive linemen signed in March. Justin Bannan and Jamal Williams were the others.

Green was given a four-year, $11.76 million contract, of which his $2.5 million signing bonus and $755,000 salary for this year were guaranteed. But by the team's mandatory minicamp in June, Ryan McBean had reclaimed his starting job at right defensive end.

The Broncos will be cleared of paying the $755,000 salary if Green signs elsewhere. But it won't be easy for Green to find work after he regressed to the point where he didn't step on the field in the Broncos' final preseason game Thursday at Minnesota.

As for the final roster makeup, McDaniels and Xanders made it clear special teams is a concerted priority as they kept 10 defensive backs and eight linebackers.

There also are health concerns that led the Broncos to keep nine offensive linemen. Right tackle Ryan Harris may be out for a while with a sprained left ankle, and left tackle Ryan Clady is just returning from major knee surgery.

The gimpy nature of tailbacks Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter also may have helped Bruce Hall join Lance Ball as backups.

And in the end, the experienced Brady Quinn was considered a valuable No. 3 quarterback while rookie backup Tim Tebow continues to develop behind starter Kyle Orton.

For some players, kids such as Syd'Quan Thompson and Eric Olsen, Saturday was a great day as they offically made an NFL roster. But it was a sad day for such franchise icons as Stokley, who this time would not receive a last-second Immaculate Deflection.

"I had a great three years here," Stokley said. "Great organization and great people. Now it's time to turn the page."

Share Report: Players union probes oddly timed rookie trades, cuts

WASHINGTON...

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d...e=HP_headlines

WASHINGTON -- Three of the four rookies involved in curiously timed trades have now been cut, prompting the NFL players' union to continue looking into whether the deals were made to avoid paying money into a special player pool, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because the union has not made the probes public, said the developments over the weekend only served to reinforce the NFL Players Association's review of last week's trades by the Washington Redskins, St. Louis Rams, Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals.

On Monday, the Redskins sent sixth-round draft pick Dennis Morris to the Rams for a conditional, undisclosed draft pick. On the same day, St. Louis sent fifth-round pick Hall Davis to Washington, also for a conditional, undisclosed pick.

Also that day, the Eagles sent Charles Scott to the Cardinals for Jorrick Calvin in an exchange of rookie sixth-round selections.

At the time the trades were made, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said the deals were made because Morris was wasn't going to make Washington's 53-man roster. He then cut Davis after one practice.

On Saturday, the Rams released Morris, and the Cardinals let go of Scott, both before the 6 p.m. NFL deadline to set a 53-man roster. Calvin, with the Eagles, was the only one of the four to make a team.

Under collective bargaining agreement rules for an uncapped year, if a drafted rookie is cut by the team that drafted him, that team is required to pay 85 percent of that player's salary into a rookie pool. The money from that pool will be distributed to rookies early next year based on the number of downs played in the 2010 season.

The way the rule is written, teams could circumvent the payment by trading a drafted player they were going to cut to another team - and have that team cut the player. Even so, the amount of savings would be small by NFL standards: just $263,500 on a first-year minimum salary of $310,000, the standard pay this year for low-round draft picks.

It is unclear what outcome the union might seek if the trades are found to be a way to skirt the payments, although it would be likely that the union would want all the teams involved to make the payments as if they had cut the players themselves.

Team leader Richardson cut in surprise move by Jets

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d...e=HP_headlines

The New York Jets released veteran fullback Tony Richardson on Sunday, according to The Daily News.

Richardson spent the past two seasons with the Jets, appearing in 32 consecutive games.

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum suggested in last week's episode of HBO's "Hard Knocks" that Richardson's position with the team was in question. During the show, Tannenbaum confides in Jets coach Rex Ryan that Richardson, wide receiver Laveranues Coles and linebacker Lance Laury are three players whose salaries are above the veterans' minimum.

On the show, Ryan is positioned as a supporter of Richardson, especially in terms of the veteran leadership the fullback has brought to Jets during his two seasons in New York.

The steady and improving play of rookie fullback John Conner, selected by the Jets in the fifth-round of April's draft, gives New York a viable replacement for Richardson.

Richardson, 38, is a veteran of 15 NFL seasons and has paved the way for several 1,000-yard rushers, including Thomas Jones the last two seasons.

Richardson is a three-time Pro Bowl selection who helped Priest Holmes to three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in Kansas City from 2001 to 2003 and Larry Johnson in 2005. Richardson did it again the following season in Minnesota with Chester Taylor and was instrumental in Adrian Peterson rushing for 1,341 yards as a rookie in 2007.

http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci...843?source=rss

Former first-round pick knows he can't have repeat of zero-sack rookie season

There are many who believe Robert Ayers absolutely has to have a huge season for the Broncos.

They believe Ayers must be the kind of pass rusher who is selected in the first round of the NFL draft, that he can't go another year with that glaring zero in the sack column, staring back at him and everyone else like an unblinking Cyclops.

Well, get in line behind Ayers, because as he approaches the start of a regular season in which he must be an impact player for the Broncos, he has already beaten you to all of the expectations.

"I know that," Ayers said. "I do. I don't want to be just out there, and sometimes I look at what I did last year and I was just out there. I say that wasn't me all the time. . . . I have to make sure it wasn't me. You know, prove it."

Some folks take a step back before they review what they have done. Perhaps they concoct an excuse or two, maybe find someone who will tell them what they want to hear.

Ayers? He prefers to barge into self-examination, pounding away like it's a heavy bag.

"I said it (after the Aug. 29 preseason game against the Steelers)," Ayers said. "I want to be great. There's a lot of guys who are good players, a lot of guys that are decent players — they're around for a while and then they're not around — but I want to be great. That's what I expect of myself.

"If I don't make it, that's just how it is. But if you don't try, you should get out now."

With star pass rusher Elvis Dumervil, last year's NFL sack champion, out for the season after surgery to repair a chest muscle, Ayers is the most likely to fill the significant void. Ayers finished the preseason with 2 1/2 sacks in limited duty.

He's big (6-feet-3 and 274 pounds), quick and plays with the kind of edge successful pass rushers have — grinding away until they break through and get to the quarterback.

Dumervil has called it "that 'want-to' to get the quarterback."

"It might take you all day to set up the one time you get to the quarterback and knock the ball out and change the game," Dumervil said. "But you can't give up, no matter how many guys hit you, no matter how many plays you don't get there. I think Robert has that. He just has to get a few (sacks) and then they'll come."

Broncos offensive tackle Ryan Harris has locked up with Ayers often in practices.

"(Ayers has) definitely worked hard, and it's good for me to go against somebody who's driven like that in practice because he just keeps things fresh and keeps things competitive," Harris said. "He was very competitive through camp, and I think it shows in the way he's been playing."

NFL scouts say Ayers was too often caught in traffic last season, engaging blockers but not shedding them.

Ayers was lauded for his awareness on the field as a senior at Tennessee, but he seemed to get frustrated in a position switch from defensive end to linebacker as an NFL rookie last year.

"That's true," Ayers said. "I didn't make enough plays. I have to play my assignments and when I get a chance, make those plays we have to make. I know I'm better than that."

The Broncos have talked about how aggressive they're going to be on defense once the regular season opens at Jacksonville.

They did not show much during the preseason, so at least part of the box can be opened against the Jaguars next Sunday.

"I'm not going to make a big deal out of (the preseason)," Ayers said. "When I've been around a long time and made a lot of plays, then we'll talk about it. Talking is just talking. I want to be the guy who does things."

Report: Al Davis overrules decision to cut Mike Mitchell
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 5, 2010 10:09 AM ET
Remember Mike Mitchell? He was the No. 47 overall pick in the 2009 draft, the safety from Ohio University that Mike Mayock and the rest of the nation of draftniks thought Oakland took about five rounds too early.

On Saturday, Mitchell was reportedly the subject of a behind-the-scenes battle between Raiders owner Al Davis and the team's coaching staff. We'll let you guess who won.

Let's back the story up for a minute. 2010 Seventh-round Raiders safety Stevie Brown practiced on Saturday. He spoke with the media about making the team. But when the Raiders officially released their cuts Saturday afternoon, they still had one move left to make.

Here's where it gets fun.

A former Raiders employee-turned Florida radio host Andy Slater said that Brown was going to get the axe on his Twitter page. This was hours before he news came out. He also reported that "everyone in the organization" except Al Davis wanted to cut Mitchell instead of Brown. Davis essentially wanted to avoid the P.R. hit and admit he made such a big mistake last year. (Maybe Davis told them Mitchell "is a great player. Get over it.")

Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune breaks down the timeline of Slater's tweets, which are fascinating. It's hard to doubt him when he nailed the news before it happened.

Apparently the coaching staff pushed hard for Brown, who also has impressed teammates. But after the Raiders couldn't find a taker for Mitchell in a trade, they cut Brown. (Even if they didn't officially mention it on their website until very late last night.)

"Let me be clear, for those tweeting me on Mitchell/Raiders, coaches do NOT want him. Addition by subtraction," Slater wrote.

But as we know, coaches don't always get what they want. Especially in Oakland.

Just another day in Raider Nation.

This NFL advance scout doesn't think much of Jay Cutler:

'The person who is going to kill this team is the quarterback,'' he said of Jay Cutler. ''Don't take my word for it. Talk to somebody who really knows quarterback fundamentals, and fundamentally this guy is a nightmare right now. Where he holds the ball, how he winds up. His lower half is completely out of sync with his upper half. He almost looks like a guy out in the parking lot throwing a football. Fundamentally, as far as stepping into his throws, setting his feet, the way he carries the ball, it's not very good.

''He's got this everything-is-going-to-be-OK attitude. I don't believe it for a minute. I think he lacks confidence in his offensive line and isn't on the same page with his receivers.''

Page saga has predictable end

From the time Jarrad Page asked out of Kansas City, there was zero chance he would ever play for the Chiefs again. That's not just because Page wanted out but the Chiefs aren't interested in players who aren't fully committed to the cause.

So once he signed his one-year contract offer, it was only a matter of where he would end up. It's New England. The Patriots gave the Chiefs a conditional draft pick, according to ESPN.

Page could have been out of Kansas City months ago had he signed his contract then. The Chiefs announced their intentions with regard to Page in April, when they drafted safeties Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis.

They didn't want him around any more. Page applied pressure on the Chiefs to move him only when Page signed his contract and the prospect became real that he would soon be walking through their locker room door.

A week before their season begins, the Seattle Seahawks are looking for a new offensive line coach after the sudden retirement of Alex Gibbs on Saturday.

The veteran coach known for his success with zone blocking schemes stepped down just eight days before the Seahawks season opener against San Francisco.

A team spokesman said the 69-year-old Gibbs was “worn out.”

Gibbs was considered one of coach Pete Carroll’s key hires as he assembled his staff in the offseason. Intent on using Gibbs’ zone schemes in the Seahawks run game, Gibbs was hired away from Houston, where he was an assistant coach with the Texans for two seasons.

“We wish Alex the best in his retirement,” Carroll said in a statement from the team. “We’re grateful for the time we had with him and we’re all better for it.”

link

That's got to stink for them being this close to the start of the season. Best of luck Alex.

Report: Vikings release Javon Walker
Posted by Evan Silva on September 4, 2010 5:04 PM ET
Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the Vikings have released wide receiver Javon Walker.

The move would not have come as a surprise when Walker signed with the Vikes on August 24. But the once left-for-dead receiver was productive in the preseason, catching six balls for 119 yards and two touchdowns in two games, including a 63-yard scoring bomb from rookie quarterback in the exhibition finale.

The Vikings did target Walker for possession receiver help only, and appear to have deemed Greg Camarillo a superior option. Walker's preseason tape should ensure that he gets another opportunity.

The Vikings' Week One starting receivers will be split end Bernard Berrian and flanker Percy Harvin. Camarillo will likely beat out Greg Lewis and enter in three-receiver sets.

It's quite a downgrade from last year's first-team three-receiver formation of Sidney Rice, Berrian, and Harvin.

Willie Parker is looking for work.

It was widely believed that Parker would be the odd man out in the Redskins' running back competition, and Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that that's what happened: The Redskins have told Parker they're releasing him.

Schefter also reports that Parker is in the process of hiring a new agent now that he's free to seek deals with other teams.

Parker got the start for the Redskins in the preseason finale and picked up 35 yards on seven carries.

The Broncos are in the process of making cuts and one of the morning surprises was Darrell Reid, who as an outside linebacker had four sacks last year and as a special teams player was among the team’s two or three best.

Reid is coming off knee surgery that made him an ideal candidate for the PUP (physically unable to perform) list, which would have given him six additional weeks in the regular season to get right.

It’s possible the Broncos decided they couldn’t take a chance on Reid’s recovery in light of the $1.73 million salary that would have been guaranteed once he was placed on the PUP.
With Dumervil on IR, Holliday gone via FA and Reid now cut, Broncos reigning sack leader on active roster is DJ Williams, who had 3.5 in 09 less than 20 seconds ago via TweetDeck

I think I have a real problem. I can't get enough NFL news. No, seriously, I am constantly searching, read the same articles over and over, scouring for info I didn't get before. It is pathological and disturbing. This is a cry for help. I wonder if fantasy football is to blame. I go to rotoworld, PFt, ESPN, NFL.com, fox sports, the fanhouse, kffl, here.... Is it lack of self control, self discipline? Obsessive Compulsive disorder? I've been up almost all night vacuously surfing the web. Maybe it's an internet addiction compunding the problem. What the hell is wrong with me?!

http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/...end-help/4974/

As the Broncos finalize their 53-man roster tomorrow afternoon, they will be culling the waiver wires in hopes of upgrading their tight end position.

Other teams, meanwhile, are hoping the Broncos will have to cut away from some of their incredible depth at receiver and defensive back.

Tight end, particularly one with receiving skills, has surfaced as a recent priority in part because Marquez Branson, who at 6-foot-3, 247 pounds is small by the standards of his position, has developed serious durability issues.

Branson suffered a significant knee injury during the Broncos’ final preseason game Thursday night at Minnesota.

With starting tight-end Daniel Graham missing the past three preseason games with bruised ribs and second-year reserve Richard Quinn limping in and out of practice the past three weeks, the Broncos need tight end reinforcement.

Other teams, meanwhile, are looking in at the Broncos’ defensive backs where as many as 11 could be picked for the final roster _ starters Champ Bailey, Andre’ Goodman, Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill; nickelback Nate Jones; second-year players Darcel McBath, David Bruton and Alphonso Smith; and rookies Perrish Cox, Syd’Quan Thompson and the undrafted Cassius Vaughn.

The Broncos are also so deep at receiver, it appears the best hope for popular veteran Brandon Stokley is coach Josh McDaniels decides to keep seven. The first six _ Jabar Gaffney, Brandon Lloyd, Eddie Royal, Matt Willis, Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas _ are set.

				18. Kyle Orton/Tim Tebow
On paper, it's the perfect platoon: Orton chucks the ball well enough (3,800 yards and 21 TDs last season!), but not well enough that he'd be insulted if you spotted him with a second QB for short-yardage spots and special packages. My big concern: I believe Tebow will be more effective than anyone anticipates, to the point that it will start a QB controversy, ruin Orton's confidence and lead to Tebow stealing the job. Quarterback platoons are like long-term affairs and repeated threesomes: Eventually, all hell will break loose. It just will. But Denver might be able to squeeze one effective season out of them.

(Quick Tebow tangent: After watching football for 35 years, I now believe the QB Success Pie Chart is something like 65 percent confidence/leadership/poise/coolness/intelligence, 20 percent accuracy/arm strength, 5 percent athletic ability and 10 percent toughness/balls/heart. That means Tebow is already 80 percent home. Throw in his marquee value and I believe Jacksonville fans and Buffalo fans will be very bitter by December. Of course, at least one Buffalo fan just read that and said: "Wait a second, I'm bitter every December. Are you saying I'm going to be more bitter than usual? Last December I sucker-punched a Jets fan outside Ralph Wilson Stadium just because he seemed a little too proud of his Sanchez jersey, then I ripped off the jersey and repeatedly drove over it with my snowplow as 150 Buffalo fans cheered me on. I'm going to be more bitter than that?" Yes.)
