Slowly but surely they are. Old boy is struggling with the fact that his way of thinking is no longer viewed as the default vantage point. He's very smart and formulates his responses very carefully. He won't engage except indirectly; essentially he's skilled in debate and is so set in his beliefs that he can't help but show his bias.
