It will be an afternoon of the unknown today in Denver.

The Raiders will start quarterback Charlie Frye, who hasn't taken a snap since the regular season began, while the Broncos' hobbled secondary likely will feature rookie David Bruton making his first NFL start.

Bruton is expected to start at safety in place of Renaldo Hill, who missed practice this past week because of an ankle injury. Also, the Broncos have activated rookie cornerback Tony Carter from their practice squad because Ty Law has been limited with a hamstring injury.

The Broncos were searching the archives to see Frye's play in the preseason with the Raiders or his time with the Browns.

"You don't know a whole lot about him," Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey said. "But you look around, you try to find what you can and look at it as much as you can. But you know they're going to do what they're going to do. The Raiders are going to be the Raiders."

Bruton has played mostly special teams this year. But with Hill hurt and Darcel McBath, who had been Hill's backup, on season-ending injured reserve with a broken arm, Bruton is next in line.

No match.

Much like the Broncos, the Raiders have an elite cornerback of their own in Nnamdi Asomugha to match up against an offense's top receiver.

Bailey typically plays left cornerback for the Broncos. But this season he has been used extensively on the opposing offense's best receiver.

The Raiders don't match Asomugha very often, usually preferring to keep him to the right side of the defensive formation. There, he would still see the Broncos' Brandon Marshall quite a bit.

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said last week that only 26 passes have been attempted at Asomugha in the Raiders' 13 games this season.

Footnotes.

McDaniels worked out Frye just before the 2005 draft after Frye completed his college career at Akron. Frye set 50 school records for the Zips. . . . The Broncos won't see the Raiders' first-round pick from the 2009 draft. Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey did not practice last week (foot) and is listed as "out" on the injury report. . . . The Broncos waived offensive tackle Herb Taylor to make room for Carter.

Agreed, Bey is a trackstar who couldn't catch hepatitis in the black hole, nonetheless a football.
