This is a continuation of the Brewers thread that I had at BM.

Hooray! Another win, and a big win 14-2!

Fielder (MVP!), Braun (Rookie of the Year), and Hart all hit 3-run home runs tonight. Jenkins also hit one, giving him 20 for the year (Hart also has 20 for the year). He now has the most 20 home run seasons in team history with 6.

But more importantly, our starting pitchers are out of their swoon. Gallardo pitched 7 shutout inning tonight. Suppan got his first victory since June a few days ago. And Villeneuva pitched well yesterday.

The call-ups from AAA are really contributing for us-they need to.

Here are the players we brought up:
IF Vinny Rottino
RHP Carlos Villanueva
RHP Chris Spurling
LHP Mitch Stetter
OF Mel Stocker
C Mike Rivera

Looks like some bullpen help, and some added depth to the infield. The catcher brought up I think was so that days when Miller is catching, we can use Estrada as a pitch hitter, and still have a catcher incase Miller gets hurt.

Only 23 games left!

...the next night, they look like a AAA team.

Hopefully, these kids that are getting playing time now, will want to stick, next year, and help the team get back to where they need to be.

If only for some pitching...... :tsk:

Every team will look like poo one night, and win the next day 12-0. They key to be a playoff team is consistency.

Edit: It always seems with the Reds is that the offense is going to be there, and pitching not so much. They always have their surges in wins when pitchers enter the "dead arm" parts of the season (after about 3 weeks into the season, and in august) where all pitchers will struggle, and you will see some crazy scores like 14-12.

I wish would only score 9 runs each night. Why only 9? Because we are now 6-9 in games after a game in which we scored 10 or more runs.

So we scored 10 runs last night, and we lost 9-0 tonight.

So we are back into a tie for 1st place with 19 games to go.

Its gotta kind of suck being a Brewers fan. You know the networks want the Cubs to get in due to the massive audience the Cubs generate. It must suck to have this nice season and know people would like to throw it under the bus for $$$.

BTW, did you know the NL playoffs will be on WTBS this year? Well actually get to see Steve Stone again and Chip Caray...plus Brenly is supposed to do some games. ESPN is no longer in the MLB playoff business. They finally pulled the plug on Berman.

Good, I love Chip Caray, and Steve Stone!!!

I don't really care how much the Brewers are televised nationally, they are on 140 games this year on FSN Wisconsin. Kind of like people in Colorado don't really care if the Broncos are televised nationally too much since they will see the games anyway...however people like you and me, it stinks having to watch the Chefs vs. Bears instead of the Broncos at 3pm on a Sunday.

Free-agent reliever Gagne agrees to 1-year, $10M deal with Brewers

MADISON, Wis. -- The Milwaukee Brewers reached a preliminary agreement on a $10 million, one-year contract with free-agent reliever Eric Gagne, giving the team another option at closer after losing Francisco Cordero to free agency.

Gagne's deal, which is subject to him passing a physical, will allow him to earn an additional $1 million in performance bonuses, a person familiar with the negotiations said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the contract has not been finalized.

Gagne's agreement was first reported by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel on its Web site.

"We're not there yet," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said Saturday night at the Marquette-Wisconsin basketball game.

Melvin said the Brewers' interest in Gagne didn't indicate a lack of confidence in reliever Derrick Turnbow, considered the most logical candidate to take over as the Brewers' closer after Cordero finalized a $46 million, four-year deal with Cincinnati.

"We're just adding depth," Melvin said.

The Brewers were interested in trading for Gagne before last season's trading deadline, but lost out to the Boston Red Sox. Gagne struggled in Boston, going 2-2 with a 6.75 ERA in 20 games after being traded from Texas, but Melvin said he still considered the right-hander a potential closer.

"He's got a history of closing, and he's a guy that can help our bullpen on the back end," Melvin said.

Gagne had 152 saves with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2002 to 2004, the most in a three-year period in major league history, and won the NL Cy Young Award in 2003. The Canadian's streak of converting 84 consecutive save opportunities in those years is far and away the longest in major league baseball.

That's what I'm talking about:
From yesterday's ESPN Spring Blog

WEEKS STRONG IN RETURN (9:42 p.m. ET)
Rickie Weeks returned from a hand injury and hit a three-run homer, leading the Brewers to a 5-4 victory over the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Weeks, who had missed nearly a week, connected in the third inning. Brewers manager Ned Yost noted that Weeks also had an important day Saturday in a minor league game, his first action since injuring his hand on a headfirst slide.

"He went over there and got five at-bats in five innings, and that helped," Yost said. "A lot of times when players are struggling a little bit, to get repetitive at-bats, helps. It helps lock him in. A lot of times it's just a slight mechanical adjustment he has to make."

Center fielder Bill Hall is moving to third base, third baseman Ryan Braun is shifting to left field, and Tony Gwynn Jr., Gabe Gross and Gabe Kapler will handle center until Mike Cameron returns from his 25-game suspension. Chris Capuano's elbow is shot, Yovani Gallardo is coming off knee surgery and J.J. Hardy has dropped 10 pounds because of a mysterious illness this spring. Prince Fielder is who's not happy with his contract situation.

What? One blown save and suddenly he's a flop?

He was a flop long before he got to Milwaukee. Did you not watch him last year? He had a 1.346 WHIP (1.875 in Boston) and basically stunk up the joint. Boston couldn't get rid of him fast enough. Then Gagne shows up on the Mitchell Report, stating he was on HGH.

So in the last year he has:

1) Blown several saves; allowed 14 runs in his first 14 innings at Boston
2) Shown up on the Mitchell Report
3) Been hurt every other month.

And we're paying how much to do the same for us? I have no clue if there is anyone in the pen suited to closing, but I'm not exactly thrilled to have him. I think he might end up being the Jeffrey Hammonds of our bullpen.

This is not based after 1 start, this is how I've felt all offseason, it was a bad signing.

Last year, Boston used him as a set up guy. You don't spend your whole career in the same routine and then immediately change without issues. He was fine as a closer last year in Texas before the trade...he'll be fine in Milwaukee this year.

'His whole career' was not being a closer. He was a starting pitcher from 99-01, closed from 02-04, was injured almost all of 05-06, and then was half closer/half setup man in '07.

He has 3.5 years of being a closer, and it's been 4 years since he was good at it.

In response to MoBro, Turnbow's not much better, but if you ask "What have you done for me lately?", Turnbow's done a lot more than Gagne.

CoachChaz
04-03-2008, 08:31 AM
Last year, he saved 16 games in 17 opps with TX. Had a 2.16 ERA and 29 K's in 33 IP.

How can you say he hasn't done it in 4 years? Turnbow has been useless since his '05 season.

Gagne sucks as a set-up man...so be it. I guess the Mariners should give up on JJ Putz since he blew a save the other night too.

studbucket
04-03-2008, 02:08 PM
He had 20 save opportunities last year and blew 4 of them. That's blowing 20% of your chances, good closers don't do that!

I'm still not sure what Turnbow or Putz has to do with Gagne being crappy...

I'm just saying he's not good anymore. I watched the game on Monday, and watching him throw meatballs down the middle of the plate and struggle to hit the zone confirmed what I thought: $10 million is 20 times what he's worth.

I'll trade him to the Orioles for a bag of peanuts.

Bear in mind that there are 32 players on this list and 30 teams, so some teams are going to have closers that do blow 20% of their saves.

Keep in mind, of the guys who are around 20%, you have the guy who's proven he can blow 0% of his saves in the past.

CoachChaz

He had 20 save opportunities last year and blew 4 of them. That's blowing 20% of your chances, good closers don't do that!

I'm still not sure what Turnbow or Putz has to do with Gagne being crappy...

I'm just saying he's not good anymore. I watched the game on Monday, and watching him throw meatballs down the middle of the plate and struggle to hit the zone confirmed what I thought: $10 million is 20 times what he's worth.

I'll trade him to the Orioles for a bag of peanuts.

He blew 3 of his save opportunities as a set-up man for Boston and only one as a true closer for Texas. The Putz reference was that Putz is considered a top 5 closer, but he blew up and lost one the other night...does that mean he's cooked? Gagne has had one bad outing AS A CLOSER in the past year and suddenly he's the worst thing out there. Overreaction

...Overreaction

Is it an over-reaction if I have said it was a bad signing all along? What if I was saying I was skeptical of how he would do all offseason? What if I removed him from my draft list because I wanted no part of him in fantasy.

1 blown save is just 1 step closer to what I think he is: washed-up.

I'm not going to get into linguistic logistics about it...and he may very well be cooked. All I'm saying is there really isn't anything legitimate to assume as much. Yes, he looked bad in Boston, but he was put in a situation he had never been in before and it altered his preparedness. Other than that...I have no reason to believe he'll fail. I might be because I thought the same thing when he signed with the Rangers and he simply proved me wrong.

He had pitched 6 days in a row.

But I went to Fridays game, and he pitched a scoreless inning, as he did Sat night when he got the save.

I have never been to a really boring game before, but Friday nights was close. It was 0-0 going into the 10th inning. The ball was not carrying at all...otherwise we would have had 3 home runs.

sources: Indians Agree To Deal Sabathia To Brewers For Minor Leaguers
It Looks Like The Next Time C.c. Sabathia Takes The Mound He'll Be Donning A Milwaukee Brewers Jersey.

The Brewers And The Cleveland Indians Agreed In Principle To A Deal For The Reigning Al Cy Young On Sunday, Sources Told Espn The Magazine's Buster Olney. The Deal Is Contingent On Paperwork Being Finished And The Exchange Of Medical Records.

The Trade Was First Reported By The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

In A Text Message To Espn.com's Amy K. Nelson, Sabathia All But Confirmed The Deal.

"i'm Good, Excited," Sabathia Wrote. "it's Weird Leaving These Guys."

Cleveland Would Get Minor League Outfielder Matt Laporta, Who Is Hitting .288 With 20 Homers And 66 Rbis In 84 Games For Double-a Huntsville, And Others. The Other Players Do Not Include Top Prospects Alcides Escobar Or Mat Gamel, According To The Journal Sentinel.

Trading Up

If C.c. Sabathia Had Pitched For The Brewers His Entire Career, He Would Be Considered One Of The Best, If Not The Best, In Team History. Here's Why:

• Sabathia Has Two 17-win, 150-strikeout Seasons To His Name. The Brewers Have Just Three As A Franchise In Teddy Higuera ('86, '87) And Chris Capuano ('05).
• His 106 Career Victories Would Be The Second Most In Milwaukee History.
• Sabathia Has 237 Career Starts, Which Would Rank Second In Brewers History.
• His 1,265 Career Strikeouts Would Be A Milwaukee Record.

The Brewers Wanted Sabathia, Who Rejected A $72 Million, Four-year Extension From The Indians During Spring Training, On Their Pitching Staff In Time To Get Him Two Starts Before The All-star Break, According To Multiple Media Reports. Sabathia, Who Is 6-8 With A 3.83 Era This Season, Could Debut In Milwaukee Against The Colorado Rockies On Tuesday.

Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin Told The Journal Sentinel On Saturday That A Proposal Was On Table And He Awaiting Word From Indians Gm Mark Shapiro.

"mark Said He'd Be In Touch With Me," Said Melvin. "i'm Sure They've Got To Think Through Everything."

Laporta Was Scratched From Huntsville's Lineup Sunday, Another Indication The Deal Was Close.

Milwaukee, Which Hasn't Made The Playoffs Since 1982, Is Second In National League Standings Behind The Chicago Cubs.

The Brewers Have Been Considered The Front-runner In The Sabathia Sweepstakes. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies And Tampa Bay Rays Were Among Other Teams Vying For His Services.

Poor Ned Yost....I liked him. I think the owner forced the GM to do it, so I am wondering if the Brewers GM will be gone after the season too....I am sure he will have no problem finding another job.

12 more games to go....let's try to win 7 of them so we can get to 90 wins and in the playoffs.

Today is officially "Milwaukee Brewers Day" in the state of Wisconsin!

Doyle Proclaims 'Milwaukee Brewer Day' in Wisconsin
Doyle Also Makes Wager With Pennsylvania's Governor

UPDATED: 6:31 pm CDT September 30, 2008

MADISON, Wis. -- Gov. Jim Doyle announced that Wednesday will be "Milwaukee Brewers Day" in honor of the Brewers first trip to the postseason since 1982.

The Brewers face the Phillies in a best-of-five Major League Baseball National League Division Series.

"The Brewers performance, determination and teamwork epitomize the true meaning of sportsmanship and athleticism," said Doyle. "Today honors their tremendous achievement, which has made the state of Wisconsin, and fans nationwide, extremely proud."

According to a news release, Doyle and Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell made a friendly wager on the match up between the Brewers and the Phillies. Doyle offered up an assortment of Miller products, Wisconsin-made Klement’s Sausages and Secret Stadium Sauce, in the event the Phillies win the five-game series. Rendell wagered a selection of Yuengling Brewery Products and world famous Philadelphia cheesesteaks.

"Although I usually enjoy real Wisconsin cheese on my sandwich, I look forward to celebrating the Brewers victory with a tasty Philadelphia cheesesteak," said Doyle. "From dramatic walk-off home runs to dominant pitching performances, this has been the most exciting Milwaukee Brewer season in a quarter century and I am looking forward to a memorable October in Wisconsin."

"Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have much in common, from the official state symbols that we share -- the white tailed deer and milk -- to our love of baseball," said Rendell. "However, I am confident that our Phillies will be triumphant and I look forward to enjoying my Wisconsin gift basket, if only to find out what Secret Stadium Sauce tastes like."

The Brewers finished the 2008 regular season with a 90-72 record, securing the National League wild card. Philadelphia finished 92-70, winning the National League East Division.

Do you have enough solid starting pitchers?

Probably up in the air. Gallardo is great if he's healthy, Parra started off decent last year before getting worn down. Suppan is alright, Bush is OK, and the fifth starter is probably up in the air. Maybe Villanueva? I truthfully haven't been following the MLB much this year, I'm tired of the league and mainly miss football.

Does every team have enough starting pitching

:whoknows:

But my opinion is no.

We signed Brandon Looper in the offseason...so that should plug some holes.

Gallardo is like a mini Ben Sheets...same pitches and everything....I don't like Suppan for the amount of money we are paying him. But we still have good 'ole dependable Dave Bush (who has grown a full beard now, it is kinda creepy in a sexual predator type of way) who is always good for 10-12 wins a year and will always give you good innings. Oh, I almost forgot about Manny Parra, who is young and inconsistant but can be real good.

We also have Carlos Villaneuva and "Big Red" Seth McClung has started games for us in the past.

There isnt much in your farm system to entice a team to give up a Halladay, Peavy or a Lee. You guys needed bullpen help. Still couldnt come up with pieces to entice anyone

We have plenty of position players in the farm (Alcedes Escobar will probably play shortstop next year in MIL, and JJ Hardy will move to 3rd base), but no AA or AAA level starting pitching....

Braun, Escobar homer in six-run fifth for Brewers
(AP) – 6 hours ago

PHOENIX — Ryan Braun and Alcides Escobar each homered during a six-run fifth inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Francisco Giants 12-1 in a game between split squads Saturday.

Randy Wolf threw two innings of one-hit baseball for the Brewers, who won for the first time in three games this spring.

Chris Capuano, who has not appeared in a major league game since 2007 due to two Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgeries, struck out the first two batters he faced and finished with two scoreless innings.

Byung-Hyun Kim gave up Braun's towering shot to left to make it 6-1.

Giants starter Kevin Pucetas allowed one hit in three innings with a strikeout. Center fielder Andres Torres doubled and tripled in three at-bats for San Francisco.

Levine calls out Brewers owner

BOSTON -- New York Yankees president Randy Levine fired an executive-level brushback pitch at Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio.

Levine's message: Stop whining.

Levine believes Attanasio should stop publicly lamenting the Brewers' troubles in signing first baseman Prince Fielder while pointing out how much the Yankees spend on salaries.

"I'm sorry that my friend Mark continues to whine about his running the Brewers," Levine told ESPNNewYork.com in a phone interview Tuesday morning. "We play by all the rules and there doesn't seem to be any complaints when teams such as the Brewers receive hundreds of millions of dollars that they get from us in revenue sharing the last few years. Take some of that money that you get from us and use that to sign your players.

"The question that should be asked is: Where has the hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue sharing gone?"

The Yankees' payroll is expected to be about $200 million this year; the Brewers' will be in the $80 million range.

Levine made his comments in reaction to an Attanasio quote in a USA Today story about the average salaries of this year's players. Attanasio -- as he has done before -- made sure to mention the discrepancy in how much the Yankees spend on players in comparison to other teams.

"We're struggling to sign [Fielder] and the Yankees infield is making more than our team," Attanasio told the paper.

The Yankees infield will make $85.225 million this year. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez will make $33 million, which is slightly less than the Pirates' entire payroll of nearly $35 million.

Derek Jeter, who is a free agent at the end of the season, will take in $22.6 million. Mark Teixeira is scheduled to earn $20.625 million.

Robinson Cano, meanwhile, must survive on a measly $9 million.

Fielder, who is represented by Scott Boras, is a free agent at the end of the 2011 season. Boras' clients usually wait until free agency before signing, but the two sides are reportedly in negotiations.

In the initial seven years of the luxury tax, the Yankees have paid teams nearly $175 million in revenue sharing, according to the BizofBaseball.com. That is 92 percent of the total revenue sharing that has been doled out.
