DENVER (CBS4) - In the eyes of the best player to ever don a Broncos uniform there wasn't anything wrong with targeting Brandon Marshall again and again on Sunday in Indianapolis.

Elway thought Marshall looked "unstoppable" in Indianapolis as he amassed 200 yards on 21 receptions, a new NFL record for a single game.

"You look at that performance and you realize what a talent he is," Elway said of Marshall, who also had two touchdowns.

While CBS4's Vic Lombardi and some other sports analysts are saying the Broncos might have done better to spread the ball around a bit more in their 28-16 loss to the Colts, Elway says Marshall was just demonstrating that he has the capability to help the team in a way very few other pro players can.

"You'd always like to have a little bit more balance, but anytime you have a guy that's getting matchups like that and is able to continue to get open you go with it," Elway said.

Even though they lost, Elway thinks the Broncos can look at the game as a learning experience.

"It was a good confidence builder to realize that they can play with those guys," Elway said.

Elway said the failures in the short yardage game will be a point of emphasis this week as the Broncos prepare for their home game against the Raiders. Several times on Sunday the Broncos offense failed to convert short third and fourth downs.

"I think that they'll look at the whole package. I think Josh McDaniels will look at what they are doing scheme-wise as well as what they're doing up front and hopefully get it repaired," he said.

One of the only times the Broncos got a first down in short yardage on Sunday was with Kyle Orton's quarterback sneak, a play Elway loved in his day.

"We got good at it," Elway said. "It was something that we always went to and I actually liked it because, number one, we could never lose ground, and number two, our chances of getting it were very good."

Except for an uncharacteristic lull in the second half where he threw three interceptions Colts quarterback Peyton Manning dominated the Broncos once again and didn't get sacked.

"He's getting older, he doesn't like to get hit, plus he's got that timeclock in his mind where he knows if someone's coming he knows he needs to get rid of it," Elway said.

On one play in the fourth quarter, Broncos sack specialist Elvis Dumervil had Manning in his clutches but the quarterback somehow still was able to release the ball and get it into the hands of Reggie Wayne for a first down.

"The Broncos didn't make some the plays they needed to make, but I think it was good for them to see that they can play with the best team in the league," Elway said. "If they get a chance to play against them in the playoffs I think it would hopefully be a different story."

I agree with John. I was screaming my butt off on the short yardage plays where the plays were so predictable. Then KO's pass off of his back foot into triple coverage on the goal and it came up quite short of Marshall. AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW:mad::tsk: is all I could do. But I feel the game ended up being closer then the score. It was our game to lose ofter the first qurater as we took over.

yeah i think the blowout losses to indy are over. we can at least hang with them now mainly because of our defense, granted they had a terrible 1st quarter. somehow they adapted and made the right changes.

the 3rd and short play calling was terrible and killed drives. that falls on the coach and i think he knows that. hillis needs to be our 3rd or 4th and short guy from now on.

John is making some very good observations in recent months about the Broncos, which shows a detailed interest in this team. I wonder if its for "old times sake" or if there is some positioning (by him or Bowlen) for more of an official responsibility.

It's just interesting to me that Elway is second guessing both the current coach and TV analysts, suggesting play calling, supporting the QB. So is it because it's Denver and people are interested in what John thinks and says, or is John going to be a part of the Broncos again someday?

Living in the Denver Metro area, whenever John talks about the Broncos, he is totally sincere - sometimes he says we, rather than the Broncos. I really don't believe he is doing this to GAIN anything from the Broncos. He truly cares about the Broncos, and follows them as close as any real fan does. He is on with Vic/Gary each Monday morning on their radio show - I hardly doubt that Pat tunes into that show each Monday to hear what John is saying about the Broncos.

It's to bad the offense could do more with the ball in the first quarter. If they had maybe the defense doesn't give up 21 points.

What good would it have done? Moreno was getting hit as he got the ball or soon after. It's not like Hillis could have ran through the 3 DL/LB's that were getting in the backfield.

heard that about playing SD, too :tsk:

I think we got lucky with the INTs, and I say that going back to the short yardage game. We HAD the chances with the INTs to really take advantage, but the 3rd downs were killing us. How many times do teams get 3 INTs from Manning?

John wouldn't be a talking head if he wasn't asked every day about his opinion.

Yea, its not like Montana was going to stop throwing to Rice just because he was having a big day. I mean come on. lol

Marshall ate that boy up all day long. I guess the good news for Indy is that he had Orton throwing to him and not Brady or Manning himself.

John will never slam the Broncos.

But.

If you read between the lines.

He usually gives some direction.

For Instance

"Elway said the failures in the short yardage game will be a point of emphasis this week"

Then he mentions QB sneak.

What John needs to remember is this......"He" stood up John Dutton and drove him backwards.......Kyles legs? Different story.

Orton can run this play fine.. The QB sneak is almost unstoppbale when needing a short gain. They should have used it a couple of times yesterday instead of those slow developing Moreno runs.

Sneaks can and do get stuffed. By the time the QB has the ball he's got to go 2 or 3 yards to make the first down. Going that far you need a very good push from the line Most of the time you're better off getting it to the RB who has a few yards of momentum and a better chance of finding a hole, seam or something to wiggle through. John wasn't fast but he was strong. I wouldn't trust it with Orton's ankle.

if he was so dominant, why didn't they attempt to go deep at least ONCE? dink and dunk... same ol' crap.

Eh....we ran QB sneaks plenty last year and most of them weren't effective at all.

We did attempt to go deep to Marshall on the underthrown interception at the goal line.

IF DEN still had poor baby Pickler it would NOT have been underthrown.
Still would have been an INT,(obviously) cause baby Pickler would be the one throwin it, but his throwing motion would have been really cool to watch, after all he said he has a stronger arm than Elway, and the velocity of baby Pickler's INT would also be a sight to behold.

the only time we ran the sneak is when we caught them at the line before they were set up. with our lines interior and kyle's ankle, i wouldn't try it in situations where they are ready for it...

A more rounded play calling makes it damn hard for the D to figure out were the football is going IMO we are Stael . hell we got one of the best FB's there is at catching screens/passes and nothing.

when we score this year we have TE's catchin passes.
