Grand Theft Auto Meets WWII

The Sabuteur (TS) is an open-world WWII game developed by Pandemic Studios and published by EA. Available for PS3, 360 and PC.

The FPS genre has pretty much dominated WWII-based historical games for years with few exceptions. 2008's Velvet Assassin deviated from the genre by providing a complete stealth experience within the WWII backdrop to great results and a different experience fighting the Third Reich. Here, another new take on WWII from Pandemic (the Mercenaries series) tries it's hand on a different WWII scenario.

In TS you are Sean Devlin, an Irish ex-Race car driver, mechanic, drinker, womanizer, and tough guy who takes no shit. You are seeking revenge against a German racing champion who ruined your life. In your quest for blood against one man, it grows into destroying the entire Third Reich and sparking a rebellion in Nazi occupied France.

If you have played any of the GTA series, you'll be right at home here. You can jack any car and go anywhere.

The game takes place in 1940's Paris under control of Nazi Germany, and the time period is re-created quite well. Exclamating the dire circumstances under the oppression of the Reich, the screens are in black and white, showing only lights, the red of the swastikas and blood. As you take action by killing German troops and destroying certain Nazi targets, the screen comes to life and the color slowly returns, as people's spirits are lifted from the tyranny. The black and white is far more engrossing than the color scenes, but this effect works wonders and seperates TS making it unique.

The controls are kinda wonky but passable. Sean doesn't control as easy as say, Nikko Bellic, but you'll get used to it. Sean can scale any obstacle (almost to comical effect) and is so versatile, he can seemingly do anything. The melee combat controls are deep enough and the aiming is good. The car contol is bad, but you won't spend too much time driving. The stealth controls work well but you'll find yourself not using them much. The minimap is handy and navigating around Paris is a breeze.

The graphics are generally excellent but the game is far more interesting to the eyes in black and white. The blood splatter is nearly comical, it looks like red ribbons streaming. The engine is always running smooth even when there is a lot going on. Extra attention was placed on the nudity of the women of TS with full jiggle physics.

The sound is quite good but the gunfire lacks any oomph. The music and some of the accents takes you into the 40's, they did very well here. Sean is hilarious.

TS is easy if you don't play at a higher difficulty. On normal Sean is almost like the Terminator he can take so much fire. You don't even need the stealth mechanics if you aren't playing on Hard. Jack up the difficulty for a more challenging experience.

This game is intended for an adult audience. In your package it includes free downloadable content to include topless girls at the dance club which is your hideout, otherwise the boobs on the girls have little tassles covering their nipples (no fun in that). It also unlocks other content like other strip clubs, private dances, more hideouts and weapons. In the PS3/360 versions you must be logged online to access this content. Make no mistake, with the language, nearly full nudity and violence, TS pushes the envelope as far as GTA does, maybe even further with a topless chick with huge tits dancing on stage in the opening screen.

Depending on your side quests and depth of exploration, TS can last you I'd guess anywhere from 12-25 hours,

With a complete story of freedom, love, comraderie and revenge, interesting sub-characters, a large and interesting world to explore and a relatively deep experience, TS is an excellent game. It's by no means perfect. It does so much so well and offers more to the entire package to overcome it's few flaws, that you can have a lot of fun here. It's lengthy campaign and downloadables is worth more than a rental and a good buy.

Just remember this is intended for a mature audience.
