There is a mod out there that I have used that lets you choose what ever icon you want for the forums.
The downfall is that you don't see before entering the particular forum if there are new posts in that forum. You can see once getting in there as there will be new post icons in the forum itself but you won't see it on the main forums page if there are new posts.
What is nice about it is gives you a little flexibility for appearance with allowing for more personalized forum icons.
