Break it down

The Broncos list the three-wide receiver set on the team's unofficial depth chart as the offense's base formation.

However, their victory at Kansas City marked the fourth time this season they lined up with at least two tight ends on offense at least 33 times in a game: Oakland, Dallas, New England and against the Chiefs. They are 4-0 in those games and have put up 372, 337, 424 and 413 yards in the four.

It's just one opinion, but it's clear the Broncos get the tempo they want when they play a little bigger on offense, and they've had some of their best production when they throw or run out of the look.

Four of their top six yardage totals and four of their top six scoring totals this season are those four games when they used the two tight end look the most.

They pounded the ball out of it against the Raiders and Chiefs, with 45 rushing plays overall in each of those victories and have been able to throw out of it as well with a season-high 48 passes against the Patriots despite the two tight end look being the predominant formation.

It balances out the offense and prevents the defense from playing one side or the other as the strong side.

Also it pushes the edges of the formation out a bit and the quarterback can have a bit longer to throw as the rushers have a tad more ground to cover if they line up on the outside shoulder of the widest player in the middle of the formation.

All in all, it has been a good look for the Broncos and could be again, especially against a speed rushing team like the Colts on Sunday when the Broncos will need to hold the ball some if they hope to get a win.
