Go Canes and if you love the NHL, please check out my blog

here http://nhlthoughts2007-2008.blogspot.com/

Also need to update, but too busy lately to do so :tsk:

For the Avs fans, I think they will be very good this year. I am just hoping my Canes bounce back and make a run again like 06 :salute:

Yes fan #2! NHL is on its way!

I ran across this very interesting site today. ssur.org
It keeps track of jerseys from all sports, from way back in the begining! They also have recent updats from just a few days ago about the Seneters new logo and Canucks new 3rd uni's!

Should be another exciting year!

ack.

med i just found out from avsfan over at bm that the draft is tomorrow. anyway we can change that??? i just told my friends, and they are going to try to get registered tonight, but i dont know if we can make the draft time.

this is for fantasy hockey by the way.

on top of that my computer is broken and my work comp (the one i am on now) wont pull up bm, or yahoo or anything, so i have no way of registering.

just seeing if you could do anything? if not well play somewhere else, and i'm sure that we will be back for another try next year.

I've read that several sources predict my Pittsburgh Penguins to reach the Stanley Cup; one even says that they'll win it! While I'm happy to see such things, I myself can't believe that they'll make THAT big of a leap from last year when they made the playoffs but got dinked in round 1 by Ottawa. I'm sure that they'll be a force, but the Stanley Cup? Maybe a little ways down the road....

psss they play the Canes :D jk

They should be good. Another year with Crosby, Malkin, Jordan Staal and the veterans should help them make a deep run. Good luck to them :salute:

actually my pick is the Rangers with their vast improvement with Chris Drury and Scott Gomez to an already talented team.

I also think Philly will be very very good.

Being a Drury fan...all I want to say is...whatever team has him on their team all you have to do is make the playoffs.

Drury is the Hockeys' version of "Mr. October". He is clutch in the post season. SO, lets review this thread in a few months.

They had a shot hit the post on an open net. So you were correct thinking it was 8, but I will take it at 7.

I liked that Cory Stillman was back. he is a very underrated player IMO

But family is more fun to play with anyways. But they do know that when the playoffs are here that that gets some precedence and i wont always be able to play.

The Stats man, great start to the season!

2007-2008 Player Rankings: Week 1
1 Paul Stastny
Games: 3
G: 4
A: 4
PTS: 8
Avalanche Guess it must be in the genes, huh? Paul Stastny has four goals and eight points in three games for the Avalanche, who are off to a 2-1 start.
2 Daniel Alfredsson
Games: 5
G: 5
A: 4
PTS: 9
Senators Heading into Wednesday's games, the Senators captain was tied with Stastny for the overall scoring lead (eight points). Alfie is expected to produce; Stastny is not.
3 Martin Gerber
Games: 4
Wins: 4
Loss: 0
GAA: 1.73
SV%: .949
Senators When it rains ... The Senators' 4-0 start is in large part due to Gerber's play in net, making for quite the goalie dilemma in Ottawa.
4 Mike Comrie
Games: 4
G: 4
A: 2
PTS: 6
Islanders After being paired with Bill Guerin and Ruslan Fedotenko, Comrie is off to a hot start on Long Island with four goals and two assists. No Duff jokes this week.
5 Nicklas Lidstrom
Games: 4
G: 1
A: 4
PTS: 5
Red Wings Shocking that Lidstrom is at the top of the defensive ranks already this season. He leads all blue-liners in points (5) and average ice time (30:19).
6 Henrik Zetterberg
Games: 4
G: 2
A: 6
PTS: 8
Red Wings The speedy Wings forward leads all players with four points on the power play.
7 Jason Spezza
Games: 5
G: 0
A: 8
PTS: 8
Senators Should we just put Heatley on the list, too? They both have seven points, but we're taking Spezza this week given his points are all assists.
8 Chris Mason
Games: 3
Wins: 2
Loss: 1
GAA: 1.99
SV%: .939
Predators While Tomas Vokoun struggles with Florida, Mason is putting up quite the start in Nashville. He has a .984 save percentage after allowing just one goal in 64 shots in two games.
9 Bill Guerin
Games: 4
G: 0
A: 6
PTS: 6
Islanders After a dull showing in San Jose, Guerin is feeding teammate Comrie on the Islanders' surprising top line.
10 Francois Beauchemin
Games: 6
G: 1
A: 4
PTS: 5
Ducks As the Ducks stumble out of the gate, Beauchemin is trying to help Chris Pronger keep their 'D' steady without Scott Niedermayer and Mathieu Schneider.
11 Martin St. Louis
Games: 3
G: 0
A: 5
PTS: 5
Lightning The big three are taking off again and St. Louis leads all Lightning players with five points in two games.
12 Michael Cammalleri
Games: 4
G: 4
A: 1
PTS: 5
Kings: As the Kings struggle to find their way, Cammalleri has had a point in every game.
13 Niklas Backstrom
Games: 3
Wins: 3
Loss: 0
GAA: .667
SV%: .971
Wild: Now the Wild's No. 1 netminder, Backstrom has a 1.01 goals-against average and .958 save percentage in two games.
14 Patrick Kane
Games: 3
G: 0
A: 2
PTS: 2
Blackhawks The rookie is holding his own after Week 1 of his NHL career. He has an assist and he scored a shootout winner against Dominik Hasek and the Wings.
15 Mats Sundin
Games: 4
G: 1
A: 6
PTS: 7
Maple Leafs: On a team that is quickly losing hope so soon into the season, the Leafs captain has seven points in four games.

Canes have been looking pretty good. Staal of to a good start! How about those Flyers! 2 players suspended a total of 45 games, ya not a good start to the season. I hate cheap shots, cross check to the face. I really think cheap shots should be hit hard 25 games, ok but this guy was suspended from the OHL 9 years ago for a year. Think he is lucky he will get a shot to play in the NHL again after this incedent.

I will try and fix the links. Leo played last night. Should have lost but the Avs put the pressure on and Smyth had 11 shots on goal and even if they bounced of the Flames skates they found there way in. Was a great win last night after being down 4-0 in the first period to come back and shut out Calgary for the last 2 periods and OT. Thedore was great coming in for Budaj last night.

Divsion wins are always nice.

yeah jose really did a good job. i felt bad for budaj on the 2nd goal as whoever it was, clark i think slid into him keeping him from sliding on the ice to the other post. But i would aslo say that the defense were the ones who stepped up the most, they still have those lapses though. arggh.

but clagary lost, and almost in deciding fashion if joe didnt backhand hte last one over the top of the net.

Happy now, I will be happier if them and colorado stay here into the new year and they we shall see what kind of teams we have after 35 games or so.

so far so good and remember any win now is one you do not need at the end of the year. Just ask both of these teams that narrowly missed the playoffs last season

Hockey Chat with Berry Melrose:
(I am JJ from Albuquerque)

Barry Melrose: (3:00 PM ET ) To all you Atlanta fans out there, hopefully your team will respond against the Rangers tonight and get this thing turned around.

Ryan Bemidji,MN: Are the wild for real? They are winning without their best player, Marian Gaborik really scoring. If he stays healthy how far can they go?

Barry Melrose: (3:01 PM ET ) This team is for real. they have three shutouts already, but they're also talented offensively, with Ralston, Dmitra, Gabarik, and Koivu. A lot of guys can put the puck in the net. If this team stays healthy, they're a powerhouse in the West.

John/ NY: Hey Melrose, Are the Isles going to make a move in there lineup to get more speed? They are too slow.

Barry Melrose: (3:02 PM ET ) It's very tough to do anything at the start of the year--they're trying to find out about their team, as is everybody else. Don't expect them to do anything drastic. They might tinker with their lineup, move people in and out, but probably no trades.

James, Ca: Barry, please tell me you agree, Beauchemin, is the BEST D Man in Anahiem. Chris Pronger is playing so tentative, that his game is not the same anymore, he misses Scotty

Barry Melrose: (3:03 PM ET ) Saying that Beauchemin is playing better than Pronger is one thing, but saying that he IS better is a whole other thing. Pronger is the best defenseman on the Ducks. The Ducks aren't playing great, but they're still among the best teams in the West, and there is no cause to panic.

Loup (Plattsburgh): Hey Barry, are you surprised with Phoenix's... acceptable start? For a team projected to finish far and away dead last, if they beat the ailing Oilers tonight, should Coyotes fans be excited about being .500 6 games in?

Barry Melrose: (3:04 PM ET ) No. Phoenix is in for a long year. They're playing hard right now, but it's easy to do so at the start of the season. Once they are out of the playoffs, we'll see whether they can continue to play hard. They just do not score enough goals to be able to compete for long in the Western Conference.

Ted (St. Louis): HOW BOUT THEM BLUES? I have to say I'm really impressed with their play so far (even if it is 5 games) but still I'd say if they stay healthy they're 1-2 years from making a serious run. Your thoughts?

Barry Melrose: (3:05 PM ET ) St. Louis is not a real young team. Their veterans don't have a lot of years left, so they have to do both--make an attempt to win now, but don't forget to prepare for the future. This team is capable of making the playoffs this year.

Craig (Atlanta): Who do you think the Thrashers will hire? Do you think the problem was really Hartley or should Wadell get most of the blame? He failed again to get a number 1 center in the offseason.

Barry Melrose: (3:06 PM ET ) I think there's lots of blame to go around. The coach is easy to blame because it's easier to for one guy to take the hit. I think this is the last Wadell fires. It will be a big-name coach, I personally expect someone like Pat Quinn.

Rob (Boston, MA): Hey Barry, how do you see the Bruins goalie carousel playing out? Does the expensive Fernandez get more starts or does Timmy "I look like old school Hasek" Thomas continue to get every other game?

Barry Melrose: (3:07 PM ET ) Hopefully they will play whoever plays the best, which right now is Thomas. You should cheer for Thomas because of his story, but they will give Fernandez every opportunity to start.

Dan (San Jose): Are the Sharks tough enough to win in the playoffs THIS year? Or do you see more of the same?

Barry Melrose: (3:08 PM ET ) The Sharks should win. They are so good, so big, so fast, they can all skate, and they have good goaltending. If there is a weakness, it will have to be something in the dressing room. Physically, this is the best team in the West.

DJ (IL): Barry I am still waiting for my Blackhawks to win something. Do I have to wait another year?

Barry Melrose: (3:09 PM ET ) Havalat getting hurt was a killer. He's out, maybe for the year, and this is the second year in the row. They were counting on him for 30-50 goals, and that was a tough pill to swallow early in the season.

SprungOnSports (Long Island): Is Ottawa the clear favorite in the East right now?

Barry Melrose: (3:10 PM ET ) I'd say so. Pitsburgh has started slow, I like Carolina, but others don't look good. I don't think anyone can argue that they're not.

Barry (Nova Scotia): Hey Barry, great name man. Do you think the hurricanes are a legit cup contender?

Barry Melrose: (3:11 PM ET ) Definitely, I like them a lot. Cam Ward looks rejuvenated and Cole looks awesome. They're the second-best team in the East as far as I'm concerned.

Lee (Dallas, TX): Any hope that Miettinen, Hagman, and Jokinen provide enough scoring punch to turn the Stars' offense around?

Barry Melrose: (3:12 PM ET ) No, they're not a great offensive team. They won last night with smoke and mirrors. Their style of play and the way they play will lead them to never scoring a lot of goals. They have to rely on great defense and goaltending, so they look the same they've looked for a while.

Nathan (IL): Barry, how big of a deal are these heated skates I am hearing about?

Barry Melrose: (3:12 PM ET ) Just a gimmick for the skate company. I wouldn't spend too much money on a pair.

Keagan (Fenton, Michigan): Can Zetterburg stay consistant? and will the red wings actually do something in the playoffs this year or will they be another 1st round blowout?

Barry Melrose: (3:13 PM ET ) They're a good team. They played fast and will be tough in the West. They have to stay away from injuries so as to not lose a guy like Lidstrom or Zetterburg, but they're top-4 in the West.

Ryan (Hartford): Hey Barry, I play rugby and we have similar 'policing' each other codes as do hockey players... what do you say to team mates like Bertuzzi and Simon after the fact, to try and get their heads back in the game and better aware of the line they can't cross?

Barry Melrose: (3:15 PM ET ) I think the incident has changed Bertuzzi--he's not as physical or agressive and it's hurt his game. Simon was very lucky he wasn't suspended more severely than he was. But Simon's a character guy, and when players cross a line like Simon, if he does it again, you have to suspend him for life. You gotta give the guy the benefit of the doubt once, but the NHL has to come down harder on repeat offenders.

JJ (Albuquerque): Is Jordan Leopold every going to pay off for the Avalanche?

Barry Melrose: (3:16 PM ET ) He's an interesting player--so much talent, such a great skater--that's why teams are attracted to him. But we need him to stay healthy and play a whole year to evaluate. He's an elite NFL defenseman if he stays healthy.

Ted (Boston): Hey Barry! Who do you think ends up with the better season? A Radulov or T Holmstrom?

Barry Melrose: (3:17 PM ET ) Radulov, I think he's the next star in the NHL. Holmstrom will be great and get his 25-30 goals, but Radulov could be a huge star.

Rob(Toronto): Do you see the Leafs being able to move Mccabe or Kubina? Their D has been horrendous.

Barry Melrose: (3:18 PM ET ) Both those guys are virtually untradeable because of their contracts. Toronto is stuck with them. They're one-dimensional players--not great defensive defensemen.

Canes lose 4-3 in a shootout loss at Pitt.

they were up 3-1 and they fell apart a bit. Pitt is still good
so this is not that bad to get 1 pt but tomorrow at
a red hot Philly team is gonna be really tough IMO

I heard that one of your guys got hurt (torso injury) and after that is when the team fell apart. I haven't seen any of the Pens games on TV yet but they are playing a LOT of close games, and were probably lucky to get out without a loss last night. The Flyers playing good hockey-what is this world coming to? :D

So Med is going to make the NHL thread for the 5 fans who care

 Only 5 of you? I still rather enjoy hockey, but it must contain some pushing and shoving to stay exciting! I used to have season tickets to a semi-pro team here, Omaha Lancers. However, when they moved across state lines, I sold my season tickets. ;)

Another hockey chat with Melrose:

Barry Melrose: (3:02 PM ET ) Hope all you Chicago fans are happy with the Blackhawks awesome game last night and the great play of the young players!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dave (Indy, IN): I'm surprised the hit on Bergeron only resulted in 2 games for Jones. What do you think of the hit from behind, injury, and 2 game suspension?

Barry Melrose: (3:03 PM ET ) I thought that Bergeron and Jones were both going for the puck and Bergeron turned at the last minute from Jones and Jones finished his check. Yes Bergeron was in a vulnerable position, but he has some responsibility for putting himself in that position.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dan (Chicago): Jason Williams had a strong game last night. Do you think he's maturing into the successful player the Red Wings thought he was going to be?

Barry Melrose: (3:05 PM ET ) I think so. They knew he was a good player. Jason Willaims scored two beautiful goals last night and he is a pretty important part of the Chicago Blackhawks.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Montclair, NJ: Is Scott Gomez under-performing considering his salary? - Mike

Barry Melrose: (3:06 PM ET ) Well if you look at salaries there are a lot of guys underperfroming in the NHL. He is not alone, but at this point in the year the Ragers were expecting him to have more points and Drury and Jagr the same thing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jacob (Pine City): Any chance for the Wild to make a run now that Gabrik is back? Where do you see them ending the year? Playoffs?

Barry Melrose: (3:07 PM ET ) The Wild are definitely a playoff team. This team was the best team in the NHL for a while, and they could be it again. They need Gabrick healthy, but this is a very good team with a good mix of veterans and young players which should be one of the favorites to win the West.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Erik (Harrisburg, PA): Hail monkey, Barry! (Your response: "Hail monkey!") Ottawa, baby! As strong as they are, is there one area they could stand to improve in?

Barry Melrose: (3:08 PM ET ) Well I would think like everyone else they would like to be deeper in defence. Well they went out and got Carmary to get a scoring second line and they would like to that again this season, but every team would like that.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dan (San Jose): Why can't the Sharks beat the Wings?

Barry Melrose: (3:10 PM ET ) Well the Sharks are not very consistent right now. That team being .500 is not good enough with that much talent on the team. Even when they win it is not decisive. I think SJ is more talented than Detroit, but they are just very inconsistent.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Graham (Michigan): Henrik Zetterberg, your thoughts.

Barry Melrose: (3:11 PM ET ) Awesome, probably, the best forward in the NHL right now. This is the best he has ever played. He is flying, setting people up, is strong on the puck and is just a great hockey player right now. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hardley (New York): After the offensive explosion by the Devils last night, how do you think the rest of their season will pan out?

Barry Melrose: (3:12 PM ET ) I think it weill be a battle for them to make the playoffs. They will have to work very hard for everything they get and they will get healthier in 2 weeks, but without Elias and Gianta socring it will be hard. But if they make the playoffs they will have done a great job.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eric (DC): Hey Barry, Are the Sabres growing and learning, or did they just get lucky?

Barry Melrose: (3:13 PM ET ) Luck has nothing to do with it when you have some many good young players. This is a good team that makes mistakes. I think this is a playoff team, but it will be a tough journey for Buffalo fans this season.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joe (Denver): Lidstrom has been a stud again this year. If he wins another Norristhis year is it time to start talking about him as the greatest defenseman not named Bobby Orr?

Barry Melrose: (3:14 PM ET ) Yeah, I think he is in that class. He is a plus 10 the last time I looked, and his minutes are incredible. So yeah I think he is one of those guys when we talk about the second best defensman he will be there.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kim (Columbus, OH): Hi Barry -- I won't get all crazy and start talking playoffs or anything, but have you noticed what the Blue Jackets have done so far? Do you think they can keep this up? Thanks!

Barry Melrose: (3:16 PM ET ) I do not know if they can keep this incredible pace up, but this is a team that is doing things right and their penalty killing is very good. Everything looks very solid. I think they will be fighting for a playoff spot, but they are not one of the 4 best in the West, and there will be tough times, but this is a maturing team who will be in the fight for a playoff sport come April.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike (Long Island): Barry...I was rocking a salt and pepper mullet with my tan pinstripe suit last night in honor of you, With some cap room to spare and an obvious need of another superstar, any chance the Islanders go after Forsberg?

Barry Melrose: (3:18 PM ET ) I think they will be very aggressive after everyone. They are hanging tough and playing well. They proved last year they will be very aggressive. The only thing about Forsberg is he will only go to a team that has a very good chance of winning the Cup, and I do not think the Islanders offer him that.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rob (NY): Can Mike Cammalleri keep up this scoring tear he has been on?

Barry Melrose: (3:19 PM ET ) Yes, he had 30 goals last season and he now has more forward depth. This is a future star in the NHL and he will be near 40-45 goals with the way LA moves the puck and with players LA have.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Graham (Michigan): Speaking of the Blue Jackets, do you think that maybe the Veteren leadership of a guy like Mike Peca is part of their success?

Barry Melrose: (3:20 PM ET ) Without a question. Peca was a great addition and it is not a surprise that they started playing better when Peca came back. A great pick up for Columbus.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Justin (San Diego, CA): Barry, With the sharks struggles, should they consider trading Patrick Marleau or even Cheechoo?

Barry Melrose: (3:21 PM ET ) No. They got lucky to get Throton and they should not do something stupid like that. You will not get a player as good as Maleau back. You cannot panic now and trade one of your young stars.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jay (Ontario): Brian Rafalski has 11 points in 13 games for the Wings. He is okay on the +/-, but looks like he is a better fit in this system than Schneider. How happy is Detroit that they let Schneider go and signed Rafalski insead?

Barry Melrose: (3:23 PM ET ) Well Schneider played well for Detroit but Rafalski is a good hockey player and leads defeceman in scoring. Schneider is probably a better defender, but Rafalski is a better passer. But Schneirder played pretty well for Detroit.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JJ (Albuquerque): I know its early but do you see any big names that could be moved? Or what are some things to look out for, player moves, team performance, etc.

Barry Melrose: (3:25 PM ET ) Well you will not see players move until you see team really, really struggling. If the Ducks keep playing poorly, there may be sometyhing there. In the East the Rangers may be a team that would do something or Atlanta.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike Keenan (Calgary): I think we can win the cup, do you?

Barry Melrose: (3:25 PM ET ) Yeah I like Clagary, they have a solid defence and they are scoring for a change. It is a team in the West that has a chance to make it to the finals and once you are in the finals anything can happen.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marc (Port Chester, NY): Hey Barry - Will the return of Sean Avery spark the Rangers offense?

Barry Melrose: (3:26 PM ET ) I think it will. He is an energy guy who gets the team going. You saw how important he was in the playoffs last year, so I think he will make a difference for the Rangers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shane (Detroit): What are your thoughts on Hasek and his injury problems? Do you think the Wings needed to go in a different direction?

Barry Melrose: (3:29 PM ET ) Well he is a 40+ guiy and those muscles do not stretch the way they used to. Hasek when he coems back may not have to play as much because of the way Osgood is playing.

Norm from Honolulu, HI: The poor Oilers. Unless a deep-pocketed investor buys the team, is there any hope Edmonton will ever vie for a Cup in the future?

Barry Melrose: (3:30 PM ET ) Edmonton can only spend the cap now and they do. So it is not about spending more. They have to draft better. They need to find a guy who can put the puck in the net. This is not about money though.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BroncoAV06
11-01-2007, 02:42 PM
few more from the chat:

Joe (MA) : Do you think Brad Boyes is a flash in the pan or the real thing?

Barry Melrose: (3:31 PM ET ) I think he is a good hockey player and I was very surprised when Boston traded him. He is a good skater and shot. He is a solid NHL hockey player.
-
Frank (Philly): Has Briere been the best offseason acquisition?

Barry Melrose: (3:32 PM ET ) So far yes. He has been the most consistent and changed his team the most. Smyth is playing better now and Drury and Gomez have not delivered much yet, so yes Briere would have to be the guy.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Frey (NYC): Has Shanny lost his touch? Or is he going to pull out of this slump?

Barry Melrose: (3:33 PM ET ) I think he will pull out of the slump. I do not think he will match last year, and he is getting a lot of shots. But it is not just him, it is the whole team is not scoring.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
James (Detroit): Barry, can you give us your take on the Attendance woes in Detroit? Is it an economy thing, a popularity issue or a combination of a lot of thigns?

Barry Melrose: (3:35 PM ET ) I think it is a combination of everything you said, plus apathy. They have won so much up there, that fans do not worry about whether or not they will win. Plus they are not as fun to watch as they have been in past years. I think it is a lot fo things, and hovckey is expensive and the economy in Michigan is not good as you pointed out.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zach Athens, GA: Considering Hossa's slow start (even for a streaky guy like him), would it be better to shop him around now, with memories of his 100 point season in mind, or should we wait till the deadline?

Barry Melrose: (3:36 PM ET ) well hopefully you won't have to move him at all. But it is tough to moive him because he makes a ton of money and who are you going to get back better than him. I thought last night was probably his best game, and hopefully that was a sign of him tunring things around.

Barry Melrose: (3:37 PM ET ) I cannot believe we are already a month in a hopefully November will be as exciting as October. Thanks for chatting with me today. See you next week.

Tonight my all time favorite hockey player gets inducted into the HOF

Ron Francis. :salute:

http://www.boston.com/sports/hockey/articles/2007/11/12/francis_made_whale_of_an_impact/?page=2

TORONTO - There was a dignified, quiet elegance to everything Ron Francis did on the ice, at a time when the National Hockey League was a lot of things, but rarely dignified and almost never elegant.

more stories like thisOnly 18 when he joined the Hartford Whalers in 1981, Francis entered the league when it was still lovably crude and full of warts, a place where bench-clearing brawls were common, and ferocity both the creator and soother of all wounds.

Amid it all, Francis, who tonight formally will enter the Hall of Fame, went ever-so-quietly about his business, dishing out assists and piling up his points. We repeat . . . piling up his points. Even the most astute hockeyphile among us might be surprised to turn this morning to the NHL's Official Guide & Record Book to find that Francis ranks fourth on the all-time point list (1,731 games, 549 goals, 1,249 assists, 1,798 points).

Yes, that Ron Francis, the guy who tonight will step forward with Mark Messier, Scott Stevens, and Al MacInnis for enshrinement. Only Wayne Gretzky (2,857), Messier (1,887), and Mr. Hockey himself, Gordie Howe (1,850), finished with more points, and only Gretzky (1,963) set up more goals.

"Has there been a player in the history of the NHL who has been as quiet and understated, and accomplished more?" Messier mused as induction weekend was getting under way here. "I don't think so. He just went about his business, with no fanfare."

In all the clatter of the day, especially within the heated rivalry between the Bruins and Whalers in the 1980s and into the '90s, it was easy to overlook Francis. Boston fans, naturally, focused on all things Black & Gold, which in part was what sent the Whalers, born in the Hub as a World Hockey Association franchise, seeking safe harbor elsewhere in New England. Bruins fans knew where Hartford was, and were aware of the Whalers' talented young center, but the Hub had only so much homage to go around the rink.

As for Whalers fans, Francis showed up on their doorstep originally as the unwanted dog, the No. 4 selection in the 1981 draft. For months, all the predraft chatter had the Whale sure to select Bobby Carpenter, the Can't Miss Kid from neighboring Massachusetts. What could be better than having a Boston-area phenom, the most highly touted Yank ever in the draft, as the face of New England's "other" franchise? Whalers ownership stood ready to station an employee at the Mass. Pike's Sturbridge exit on game nights at the Civic Center, just to count the cars as they headed south through the toll booths.

But come draft day, Winnipeg led off by taking Dale Hawerchuk, Los Angeles followed by nabbing Doug Smith, and then Washington followed with the blindside hit of hits, swiping Carpenter at No. 3. Hartford missed on the Can't Miss Kid, and took the booby prize, the 6-foot-3-inch Francis from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., fresh from a 69-point season in the Ontario Hockey League. No telling how the Capitals' fortunes might have played out for the next couple of decades had they opted for Francis.Continued...

"Funny, isn't it?" said lifelong Whale fan Alan Victor, president of the Whaler Booster Club, a small-but-avid bunch who remain loyal to the franchise, 10-plus years after its hasty exodus to North Carolina as the Hurricanes. "Sometimes you don't get what you want - but you end up with something better."

Victor, reached by telephone yesterday at his home in New Britain, Conn., remains hopeful the NHL one day will return to Hartford. Like many of his booster club brethren, he believes it was the March 1991 deal sending Francis to Pittsburgh, where he quickly won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Penguins, that ultimately led to the franchise's demise in Hartford.

"No question that sent us down a slippery slope," he said. "It triggered the downfall of the Whalers in Hartford. I went to a national booster club meeting this last August, in Philadelphia. The theme was Halloween because, you know, the Flyers are orange and black, right? I got up and said, 'Well, we're used to trick-or-treat in Hartford. We were tricked when Ron Francis was dealt to Pittsburgh . . . and then Pittsburgh got the treat, winning two Cups with him.' "

Chuck Kaiton, the Hall of Fame broadcaster who remains the radio voice of the franchise, isn't as certain that deal portended the end of the Whale.

"But it sure didn't help," said Kaiton, reached in Sunrise, Fla., where the former Whalers tonight will face the Panthers. "What always confounded me about the whole trade was the fact that people with the Whalers questioned his leadership, and that someone made the assessment that John Cullen [the key player obtained from Pittsburgh] would be a better player than Ron Francis. I mean, nothing against Cullie, but that's always puzzled me. Ron Francis was nothing other than Mr. Consistency, and that put Cullie in the position that . . . well, he'd better be the better player. And he wasn't."

Francis landed in Pittsburgh when franchise center Mario Lemieux was in his prime and Jaromir Jagr was the brightest, most sensational young name in the game. Very similar to how Butch Goring proved to be just the right fit behind Bryan Trottier a decade earlier on Long Island, Francis was the underlying strength behind Mario Magnifique in Steeltown. He twice broke 100 points with Pittsburgh and also went on to wear the captain's 'C', resuming the role that was abruptly stripped from him by Whalers coach Rick Ley just weeks before general manager Eddie Johnston shipped him to the Pens.

Kaiton attended Francis's first training camp with the Whale, and he was immediately impressed with what proved to be the Francis trademarks - the smooth hands and deft timing of passes. The kid with the long, black, curly hair was humble and quiet, which were also his trademarks, but, said Kaiton, he also was a man of his time.

"I'll tell you this," said Kaiton, his blood pressure no doubt rising in lockstep with his voice. "I remember him one training camp locking up in a fight with Joe Reekie! Yessir, Ronnie Francis and Joe Reekie belting it out in training camp, back when people had to fight their own teammates for jobs out there. And when I say fight, I mean everyone fought. Hard to believe today, I know, but it's true."

Back in the shadows of the Civic Center, which is now home to the AHL Wolfpack, Victor said he and his fellow three dozen or so Whaler Boosters wish they could be here tonight to see their favorite player immortalized. Just over a year ago, "Ronnie Franchise" had his Whalers No. 10 hoisted to the Civic Center rafters. Now all they have is their memories.

"All class . . . great with fans, great with his teammates . . . everything you want in a guy," said Victor.

Francis nowadays is the Hurricanes' assistant general manager, and is widely considered astute enough one day to be an NHL GM. If the league ever made it back to Hartford, the Booster Club no doubt would want him in charge of the front office.

"We've still got a long way to go," said Victor, noting the city and state legislature would first have to approve a state-of-the-art arena to woo back the NHL. "But I'm convinced the league will expand again in a couple of years, and that's what I'd want, a new team, something you can start up and grow with. I don't want to steal it from another city, because, hey, we know what it is to get your heart torn out."

Here is an update my friend

Hurricanes LW Cole out vs. Lightning

November 14, 2007
TAMPA, FLORIDA (TICKER) -- After suffering a potentially serious neck injury in Monday's 4-3 victory over the Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes left wing Erik Cole expectedly was not in the lineup against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.

Cole, who suffered a fractured vertebra in a game against Pittsburgh two seasons ago, crashed head-first into Florida goaltender Tomas Vokoun in the third period of Monday's contest and was carted off the ice on a stretcher.

He was taken to the nearby Cleveland Clinic for observation but was released later Monday night and cleared to join the Hurricanes for their flight to Tampa on Tuesday.

A third-round pick in 1998, Cole has recorded three goals and nine assists in 14 games this season. The 29-year-old native of Oswego, New York has collected 110 tallies and 241 points in 359 career contests, all with Carolina.

Nice artical about Stats. I did not know that his dad defected for a better life for the family and a chance to play for the Nords.

Adrian Dater
For Sporting News

It's a story right out of a Tom Clancy novel. On a dark night in 1980 in Innsbruck, Austria, 23-year-old Peter Stastny, his brother Anton, and Peter's pregnant wife, Darina, met secretly with Quebec Nordiques owner Marcel Aubut and another team official after a European hockey tournament. The topic of discussion: a secret plan to defect to North America. If caught, the Czechoslovakian defectors faced the prospect of death. Bucking those scary odds, they made a successful dash to freedom.

On a recent sunny day in Denver, Paul Stastny, Peter's 21-year-old son, discussed what he did on his most recent off-day as a second-year member of the Colorado Avalanche -- a descendant of the Nordiques:

"Hung out, watched a little TV, played some video games. Just want to enjoy myself away from the game, take it easy."

Peter, along with brothers Anton and later Marian, went on to attain great statistical and financial success in the NHL after the harrowing escape, which afforded Peter's sons Paul and Yan a carefree upbringing in Quebec and later St. Louis.

"I know that my dad went through a lot to give us kids a better life," says Stastny, a center on the second line. "He made it easier for me. But he never babied us in any way, and I think that helped a lot in helping us have better lives."

The hockey genes were passed on to Yan, who has bobbed between the American Hockey League and NHL stops with Edmonton and Boston, but Paul seems to have inherited Peter's ability to put points on a scoreboard at hockey's highest level.

Many teams missed that potential in 2005, when Paul was picked by Colorado midway through the second round -- 44th overall -- in the NHL entry draft. But he vaulted to rookie prominence last season when he scored 28 goals and 78 points, second only to Penguins center Evgeni Malkin, the Calder Trophy winner.

Through 17 games this season, Stastny led the team in goals (nine) and assists (13) and the Avalanche was 11-5-1. Stastny wears his Hall of Fame father's No. 26 now, thanks to the decision by defenseman John-Michael Liles to switch from 26 to 4 in honor of his hero, Bobby Orr.

That number takes several former Nordiques players and officials who still work with the team back to the days when Peter Stastny patrolled the ice. The no-look passes, the quick first step, the quick, sure hands.

"It's a little strange at times to see how much Paul looks and plays like Peter," says Michel Goulet, a Hockey Hall of Fame right winger who played for years on a line with the elder Stastny in Quebec. "He's got so many of the same tendencies. He's a smart player in the way his father was. He sees the game a little further ahead than other players."

What is slightly different, the old-timers note, is that Paul is so much more easygoing and confident than his dad was at the same age. There's even a perception that he doesn't seem to care as much about the game.

Paul is known for leaving all his hockey cares at the rink when a game or practice is over. He prefers to hang out with University of Denver lacrosse and soccer buddies around town, and he freely admits he'd gladly trade a night at the rink for a night of 24 or another favorite TV show.

"Life isn't all hockey," Stastny says. "But I do love playing the game. I just think in my dad's day there weren't as many options, other than hockey, for him to have a better life. But I know all that he did for me and the family. My life, the way it is now, probably wouldn't have been possible if he didn't do what he did."

Joe Sakic, the Avalanche's longtime captain and a 600-goal scorer, played with Stastny's father in Quebec. He remembers little Paul scurrying around the Nordiques' dressing room, putting pucks made of balled-up tape between his legs.

"Now he's giving me passes on the power play and covering up for my mistakes from the shift before," Sakic says. " I'm not sure I would have believed it, but with him having Peter's genes, maybe I'm not so surprised. But, yeah, I officially feel old now."

Avs are in a funk. Offense went away and team is not getting into rythem and getting pushed around. Scott Parker did lay the smack down last night, not so much a fan of the cross check he did, but he did it to the chest, got the fight he wanted, won the fight, and out for the game. Down 4-0 the Avs needed something!

John Kreiser | NHL.com columnist Nov 29, 2007, 10:07 PM EST
The NHL Board of Governors approved a scheduling change Thursday that will produce more inter-conference matchups, increasing the variety of teams fans can expect to see next season.
Under the new format, approved at the League meetings in Pebble Beach, Calif., and scheduled to begin in 2008-09, teams will play each club in their division six times, a total of 24 games, and the 10 other clubs in their conference four times, a total of 40 games.

The remaining 18 games in the 82-game schedule will involve each club playing all 15 clubs in the other conference at least once, home or away. The three remaining games will be devoted to inter-conference “at-large” scheduling.

"The sense of the board was we heard the concerns raised by some of the fans, and this was an attempt to be responsive to the concerns of our fans," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said.

Under the current format, adopted for the 2005-06 season, teams play their four division rivals eight times each, the other 10 teams in their conference four times apiece, and 10 games against teams in the other conference — five home games against one division and five away games against another, with no games against teams in the remaining non-conference division.

The new schedule allows for each team to play every other team at least once a season.

maybe Sean Avery, he was and still is a cheap shot artist and did play for the Wings and is small maybe.

the only reason why I do not think it was Whitney as he only played one season in Det. I have never seen a cheap shot from him but you never know, its hockey and anything could have happened.

Thats what hockey should be like.

On a personal note, I am very happy with the flames performance as of late. Still worried that they are giving up too many goals, Dion Phanuef is doing his best, but he really needs some help back there. We desperatly need a really hard hitting defenseman to keep the front of the net clear, too often goals are being given up because theres an offensive player blocking Kippa and leaving him unable to react to shots.

We'll see what my Pens do without Sid the Kid for about a month or so . 2-0 win at Montreal tonight, but it's not gonna be easy without him. Reminds me of when Mario would be out for long spells at a time; when they finally started to learn how to win without him he'd come back! :afraid:

As part of ESPN.com's ''Breaking Barriers'' series hockey pioneer Willie O'Ree will stop by Wednesday to talk about his role in the game's past, present and future.

On January 18, 1958, O'Ree became the first black person to play a game in the NHL, a 3-0 win over the Canadiens in Montreal. He played two games that season, recorded no points, and was sent back to the minors.

During the 1960-61 season, O'Ree returned to the NHL, and he tallied four goals and 10 assists in 43 games that season. That was the last time O'Ree played in the NHL, and his achievement, to some, has become a forgotten bit of history since the NHL would not see another black player on the ice until 1974 when Mike Marson broke in with the Washington Capitals.

Today, O'Ree has become one of hockey's greatest ambassadors, and he has been called ''The Jackie Robinson of Hockey.'' For the last 10 years, the 72-year old O'Ree travels across the United States and Canada as the NHL's Director of Youth Development for the NHL's diversity program. In that role, O'Ree conducts 10-15 formal clinics a year and introduces kids of all ages and backgrounds to the game of hockey.

Buzzmaster: (3:00 PM ET ) Mr. O'Ree is here! Fire away with your questions!

Willie O'Ree: (3:01 PM ET ) Hi everyone this is Willie O'Ree, thank you for taking the time to submit questions, and I hope everyone has a great afternoon!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John (Columbus): Mr. O'Ree, what kept you motivated to continue your hockey career despite the prejudice against you?

Willie O'Ree: (3:03 PM ET ) Well I set a goal to play as a pro and get into the NHL. After my eye injury I was discouraged. But I told myself I had not reached my goal, and that I needed to stay focused, regradless of what people said, and everything would work out.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ed: What needs to be done to make the NHL more diverse? Is the league on the right track?

Willie O'Ree: (3:04 PM ET ) Yes the league is on the right track. The NHL is drawing from moore than 30 different countries. Since I have been appointed the Director of Diversity I have come into contact with over 40,000 boys and girls, and we are looking to increase that number. But yes, the NHL is working in the right direction.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joel (California): How much longer do you want to stay involved with the NHL?

Willie O'Ree: (3:06 PM ET ) I am 72 years young rigtht now and have been working in my curret positon for 10 years. I would like to stay about another 5 years. I really love my work; it is very rewarding to work with young people towards achieving their goals.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matt : I see some have called you the Jackie Robinson of hockey. How does that make you feel? And did you ever meet or speak with Jackie?

Willie O'Ree: (3:09 PM ET ) Yes I had the pleasure of meeting Mr., Robinson isn 1949. I was playing baseball in my hometown and we won the title when I was 14, and they sent us to NY, where I emt Jackie. I spoke with him briefly, and I told him I played baseball and hockey and he noted that not many black kids played hockey, and I told him there were a few. The name was a media invention, but I am very honored to be mentioned with Mr. Robinson.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joel (California): It seems that with the 50th anniversary of your first game you have been getting a lot of deserved attention recently. How have you been handling it?

Willie O'Ree: (3:11 PM ET ) I have been hadling it well, I think. I am very happy that I was able to break down barriers for black players. When I was playing in the league there were the original 6 teams and now there are 30 teams, so a lot has changed. But I am having a great time seeing family and friends, and I am looking forward to the next 50.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trent (NY): When you first entered the league, did you experience a lot of racism at the hands of players and/or fans? If so, how did you deal with it?

Willie O'Ree: (3:13 PM ET ) Hi Trent. I knew what I was going to be exposed to. But I said to myserlf names can only hurt you if you let them. In Canada I did not experience racism, but in NY, Chicago and Detroit I experienced racist remarks from players and fans. But I turned my ears off to it and just went out and played.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Laura: What do you think about the shootout deciding games in teh NHL?

Willie O'Ree: (3:14 PM ET ) Hi Laura. Well the fans really enjoy it and it is exciting! In my travels I have talked to a lot of people who really enjoy. So I support it!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Andrea (Spokane): What do you think of current minority players like Jarome Iginla? Do you think they still face similar pressures like you did in the NHL?

Willie O'Ree: (3:16 PM ET ) Hey Andrea. There is still some racism in the league, but it is not as severe as when I played. But there have been incidents. But now there are fines and suspensions for that. Back when I played, the name calling was every game and nothing was done of it. I have spoken to Jerome and most of the black players and from time to time they hear racial remarks, but it is not as severe as when I played.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matt (Pittsburgh, PA): Mr. O'Ree, which has been more rewarding, your role in history, or your role in the future as the Director of Youth Development? The NHL is better for your effect on both!

Willie O'Ree: (3:18 PM ET ) Hi Matt! I onl;y played 45 games in the NHL. two in '58 and 43 in '61. Breaking the color barrier was a thrill for me. But I believe that the work I am doing now is more rewarding. If I can get into the HOF it will because of the work I am doing now. Being able to influence the boys and girls out there is great. I am in a positioon to give back to the sport and community that gave me so much. So I would have to say the later!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joel (California): What area (location) do you see the most growth in the diversity of youth hockey players today?

Willie O'Ree: (3:19 PM ET ) Well in my travels through North america I would say the most growth in in the East. I live in California, and there are a few prgrams there, but the majority are in the East and that is because they have more rinks and the cold weather!

Willie O'Ree: (3:22 PM ET ) I just want to tell ESPN that I loved the segment I saw on TV! Thank you to all you fans for all the great questions! I really enjoyed them. And I look forward to continuing to work hard with the Diversity Program and getting another 15-20 programs started in the next few years!

Thursday Chat!

Barry Melrose: (3:00 PM ET ) Congratulations to all the Capitals fans, whose team has finally climbed into a playoff spot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dan (Chicago): With his recent performance, is Alex Ovechkin a lock for the Hart Trophy?

Barry Melrose: (3:01 PM ET ) You'd have to say that he may be getting a run from Nicky Lidstrom in Detroit, but with the way he's playing, and with Washington climbing into a playoff spot, you'd have to say he's the favorite.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dan (Saint Louis, Missouri): Barry, Do my Blues have any chance, in your opinion, of making a late-seaons charge to lock down a playoff spot in the West?

Barry Melrose: (3:02 PM ET ) I don't think so. The West is so good, it's tough to climb over teams. Colorado is playing well with their injuries, Phoenix is not an easy win. St. Louis may have played their way out of a playoff spot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paul B. (Manistee, MI): Barry, What do you think about the terms of Phaneuf's new deal and deciding to re-up with Calgary for 6 more years?

Barry Melrose: (3:04 PM ET ) It's great for all parties. Calgary would have liked to have had a longer contract, but that's one worry they won't have to think about for a while. They have Iginla locked up for a long period of time as well. Calgary is taking care of their stars, which is important with the way the cap is.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JJ (Albuquerque): What do you think of the Avs play lead by Hensick lately through the injuries to the big two?

Barry Melrose: (3:05 PM ET ) Unbelievable. They're playing well over .500 without Sakic, Smith, and Stazny in the lineup. It's a team you can be hopeful about with the character they're showing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jon (Philly): Barry, Forsberg said he's not going to play for the Wings, Sharks, and Pens among other teams. Does that mean the Flyers have the best shot to land him now?

Barry Melrose: (3:07 PM ET ) They have a good shot. He will go to a team that he feels has a chance of winning the Stanley Cup. It depends on what he asks for. Teams may not make serious offers because they don't want to lock him up for too many years. Also, which Forsberg are you getting? Don't be surprised if Ottawa or Anaheim are in the running. He's a wild card.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Karl (Chicago): Barry, what is the biggest problem for the Blackhawks? Power play, defense, injuries?

Barry Melrose: (3:08 PM ET ) Apart from Toews, they're healthy right now, and he's coming back. I think youth and inexperience is catching up with them. You tend not to handle adversity well when you are young. They're not playing well, but missing the playoffs may not be the worst thing. They can get a high draft pick and move some players. But the finish to this season could be considered a disappointment.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Diego ((Chicago)): Who should win Rookie of the Year?

Barry Melrose: (3:09 PM ET ) I think Kane still deserves it, but Backstrom from Washington is playing very well. I would probably say it's between those two guys. Toews was in it, but the injury hurt his chances.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pete (San Antonio): Howdy from Texas Barry! What is going on with the Habs in the 3rd period? Is it youth, lack of discipline, coaching, or all of the above? Can Carboneau get it together to avoid further 3rd pd melt downs and how far will the get in the playoffs this year?

Barry Melrose: (3:10 PM ET ) The good news is they're winning a lot of those games, even though they're too close. It's certainly something Carboneau will address. You can fix that if you're winning. Montreal is playing better than anyone in the East right now and have climbed within striking distance of Ottawa. They could be the best in the East.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matt (Boston): how do you think the bruins look entering the playoff run?

Barry Melrose: (3:11 PM ET ) I've been very impressed with them, even with all the injuries they have. Boston has been a pretty impressive team. I hope they hang on to a playoff spot. They're overcome a lot. Just making the playoffs along with all their injuries would be fantastic.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ZACH (PHX): Whats the deal with the Rangers?

Barry Melrose: (3:12 PM ET ) The Rangers are obviously a disappointing club. Everyone expected them to be better than they are. They have been playing better, but you can't lose a game to L.A. at home when you're fighting for a playoff spot. They have been a disappointment.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ryan (Los Angeles, CA): Hey Barry, Will the addition of Rick Tocchet help or hurt the chemistry the Coyotes have going this season?

Barry Melrose: (3:13 PM ET ) It's a tough time for Rick to go in there because Phoenix is playing so well. He won't hurt anything as he's a good, well-respected guy. But they're playing together so well right now, so I don't think he will help them any. It's good to see Rick back in the NHL.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Colin (Dallas): Aw Barry. Just when I think Zubov had a real shot at the Norris this year, he goes down and is now on IR. Should Stars fans be worried about their blue line?

Barry Melrose: (3:14 PM ET ) The Stars are as good as anybody in the West right now, so they've continued to play well without Zubov. But they are not as good without him. He should be back soon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lukas (St.Paul, Minnesota): How far can the Wild go this season?

Barry Melrose: (3:15 PM ET ) I like the Wild. They are my dark horse team in the west. They score goals, have a lot of talent, and are always good defensively. I like them a lot even if no one is talking about them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Justin (Ny, Ny): Do you think the Islanders can recover from their recent slide and get back to playoff contention? they were in 8th place at the allstar break...

Barry Melrose: (3:16 PM ET ) It'll be tough. Washington is playing very well, Pittsburgh will probably not fall. The Islanders just can't score enough goals to win consistently, no matter how well DiPietro plays.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
J.B. (Dunmore, PA): Does it look like the Penguins will be near full strength for the stretch run?

Barry Melrose: (3:17 PM ET ) Crosby is skating now, and the rest of the guys are working out--Fleury is working out, so come the trade deadline, they should have a pretty full team if no one else gets hurt. Pittsburgh should have everybody back healthy at that time. None of that would have mattered if the team went in the tank when Crosby was injured.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dan (Chicago): Can we atrribute the Caps turnaround to a bad division or are they really a complete team now?

Barry Melrose: (3:18 PM ET ) The Caps are a good team. They can score, which overcomes a lot of mistakes, their goaltending has been good, they don't give up a ton of goals against. They are playing solid hockey.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tom (Camden, NJ): Gagne has had his moments, but consistently looks like he hasn't fully recovered from missing all that time being injured... will this end up being a problem for the flyers in the playoffs?

Barry Melrose: (3:19 PM ET ) As long as the concussion is in the past, you'll see him score consistently. But he's not the go-to-guy anymore. It'll take him some time to be the player he once was. Philly is winning without him, which bodes well for when he comes back.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eric (SJ): Barry, who do you like winning the Pacific Division?

Barry Melrose: (3:20 PM ET ) I think San Jose will win it at the end. They will get hot down the stretch and win it. The Ducks will play well, LA is playing better, but San Jose will win that division.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jared (NY): Peter Mueller has turned into a goal scoring machine. Any chance he makes a run at the Calder?

Barry Melrose: (3:22 PM ET ) He's played great. He's starting to become the player they'd hoped he would become. Peter Mueller has been great and could climb into contention for the Calder.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jack (Toronto): Why does Sundin want to stay in Toronto? We certainly wouldn't begrudge him trying to win a Cup with someone else a la Ray Bourque.

Barry Melrose: (3:23 PM ET ) Unless Toronto changes drastically, you will see him move. He can always come back--you look at Tkachuk in St. Louis. That's what I think would happen. Toronto will not win a Stanley Cup anytime soon and Sundin will not play much longer. He has a no-trade clause, so he has to waive that if the right team approaches him.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steve (Baltimore): How underrated is Pavel Datsyuk? He is top-10 in scoring, top-5 +/-, and is just an unbelievable playmaker, yet he isn't being mentioned as much as guys like Kovalchuk, Iginla, and Ovechkin.

Barry Melrose: (3:25 PM ET ) He's one a team with so many great players, but you're right, he is overlooked. The hockey guys don't overlook him--they know what a super hockey player he is.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scott (St. Paul, MN): What piece are the Wild missing to make a deep run in the West?

Barry Melrose: (3:26 PM ET ) Nothing, I think they are very capable of making a deep run. It's probably to their advantage that no one is talking about them. Right now, they are as good as anybody in the West.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joe (Raleigh): What do the Canes need to do to stop the free fall they've been in over the last couple months?

Barry Melrose: (3:27 PM ET ) They have to check better and get better defensively. The Canes score goals because they do have some good offensive players, but it's no good scoring four if you give up five. If they can tighten up defensively, I think they will win that division.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joel (East Longmeadow, MA): Barry, do you favor the idea of waiting on suspension length until the true extent of the injury is known? I think I do, but I'm also a B's fan suffering from the loss of Bergeron.

Barry Melrose: (3:29 PM ET ) You can't do that, because what if there's a vicious hit and the guy isn't hurt? I think Campbell is doing the right thing--he looks at the hit, the player's history, and the circumstances, and he acts on the hit, not the injury. I think that is how you have to do it, otherwise you open up a can of worms.

Alex is my favorite player outside anyone in an Avs jersey. Great skills, will go after people, play physical, all around hockey player. Definitly want to catchi him in action some day.

The NHL's most explosive scorer has Capitals fans thinking playoff hockey.

In this week's Facing Off, Alexander Ovechkin tells us why The Great One's single-season record of 92 goals may be tough to break, how he compares to Sidney Crosby and what it's like to be the NHL's first $100 million man.

Question from David Amber: Coming to the United States from Russia as a teenager, what was the toughest adjustment you had to make?

Answer from Alexander Ovechkin: It is a different life here. The atmosphere is totally different. There was so much change, but I had to adjust as quickly as possible. Learning English was not too tough. I just listened as much as I could to the guys. I knew some words, so it was OK for me.

Q: Your dad was a professional soccer player in Russia. Your mom won two Olympic gold medals in basketball for the country. Who is the better athlete?

A: My mom is definitely the better athlete. My dad was injured and he stopped playing when he was young. My mom was one of the best in our country. Two gold medals is the [best] she could do. She was a guard, a great playmaker.

Q: I read that you describe her as the Michael Jordan of Russian basketball. Is that true?

A: Yeah, she was really good.

Q: So how did you end up playing hockey instead of the sports your parents played?

A: My brother took me to the Dynamo school, and right away, I just loved the sport. It wasn't something my parents pushed me into; I just wanted to play, so they let me. My dad would say, "It doesn't matter what you do, just make sure you do it well." So I always remember that.

Q: What does Alexander Ovechkin do in the offseason when he isn't thinking about hockey?

A: Just normal stuff. I go out. I go to the movies, go bowling, swimming, all those things.

[+] EnlargeBill Wippert/NHLI via Getty Images

Alexander Ovechkin signed a 13-year, $124-million contract extension with the Capitals last month.

Q: But you go back to Russia, right?

A: Yeah.

Q: What's it like being an international hockey star in your home country?

A: People recognize me over there, but nobody bothers me. I go to places where I have a lot of friends and I know the owner and the people who work there, so it's not a hassle.

Q: In Washington, D.C., do people recognize you?

A: I don't go out much here. My parents are here with me, so I hang out with them. When I go to the movies, I show up at the last minute, so no one really sees me.

Q: What's the best city to play in?

A: I like Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa. The atmosphere is unbelievable. It is cool to be on the ice in those cities. You know the fans are really into the game.

Q: As a rookie, you had 425 shots on goal, the fourth-highest total ever. Do your teammates ever accuse you of being a puck hog?

A: [Laughs] No. Nobody ever tells me to give them a pass or anything. My job is to score goals, and if I don't shoot the puck, I can't score goals.

Q: This season, the team got off to such a bad start. What has been the difference with Bruce Boudreau as coach?

A: It's pretty simple. He changed our mentality and he changed our system and he just really made us believe we are great players and we can win. He helped us get our confidence back. He has done an unbelievable job. I hope he wins Coach of the Year.

Q: Your nose has been broken a few times, you're missing a front tooth. Are you really a tough guy that just happens to have some scoring touch?

A: That's hockey. You never know what's going to happen. It's a tough sport. No tooth, a broken nose, but I'm looking good [laughs].

Q: How does it feel to be the NHL's first $100 million man?

A: Very good [laughs].

Q: OK, that was a dumb question. But I read you didn't use an agent to get the deal done. What was it like negotiating against a billionaire businessman like Ted Leonsis?

A: We have a good relationship. We met about five times and we just reached a deal. It wasn't too hard. If we had any trouble coming to an agreement, I had an agent I could bring in to get it done. The deal, because it is so long, is good for me. It's good for the team. I don't really think about the contract right now. I just think about my game and what I have to do better and that's it.

Q: Of all the goals you've scored in the NHL, which one is the most memorable to you?

A: Yeah, the first one. I scored against Columbus in my first game. I actually scored two in that game. But the first one I remember best. I keep that puck in my house in Russia.

[+] EnlargeJeff Vinnick/Getty Images

Alexander Ovechkin, left, says he has no true 'rivarly' with Penguins star Sidney Crosby.

Q: At All-Star weekend, you tried some pretty difficult things during the breakaway challenge. Where did you come up with your tricks?

A: It was just improvisation. I wanted to try to doing something different. It's hard to come up with things to do, but it's good for fans to see what we can do with the puck, the stick, skates. Afterward, a lot of people said they enjoyed it, so that's what counts.

Q: What's the biggest difference between you and Sidney Crosby as players?

A: I think we're really different players. He's a playmaker. I'm a shooter. He's a great player. I like watching him play.

Q: What kind of rivalry is there between you and Sid?

A: We don't have a rivalry; we respect one another. But because he's Canadian and I'm Russian, we will get to play against each other at the Olympics and things like that, so maybe a bigger rivalry will grow.

Q: Who is the best player in the league right now?

A: There are so many good players, that's hard to say. [Pause] I think maybe the best player is Roberto Luongo. He is really tough to beat.

Q: Really? Luongo? What about you?

A: I'm a good player, too [laughs].

Q:The single-season NHL record is 92 goals. Is 93 possible?

A: It's hard because times have changed. The goalies have changed, and if you see how goalies played in the 1970s and 1980s, it was pretty funny actually [laughs].

Q: How many goals would you have scored playing in those eras?

A: I don't know. It's hard to know what I would have been like. That's a tough question.

Q: Who is the team to beat this season in the NHL?

A: Detroit. They have so many good players. They have tons of experience. Their forwards are fast. Their defense is solid. They are good top to bottom.

Q: Knowing you're staying in Washington for the long haul, it makes a lot of Caps fans feel confident that one day the team will win the Stanley Cup. Realistically, how long will that take?

A: As soon as possible. You never know. Look at the New York Giants winning the Super Bowl. No one thought that was going to happen. So you can't just have a plan, you have to play out the season. That game was pretty cool. We watched the game together as a team. About half the guys were cheering for New England and the other half were cheering for New York. I was cheering for the Giants because no one believed in them. Maybe that will be like us, where we can surprise everyone with a championship.

Alex is my favorite player outside anyone in an Avs jersey. Great skills, will go after people, play physical, all around hockey player. Definitly want to catch him in action some day.

He is something to watch. I enjoyed it when he came to town last year. Glad you got him in the east.

Good luck to the Avs and Pens as my Canes suck and most likely
are not going to beat out a very hot Wash team that deserves the SE divsion.
I know they are tied but look like a deer in the headlights

It was like the NW was a month ago, win one night be in first, lose be in last. Canes at this moment are 3rd in the Easten Conference, turn that frown upside down Med! Should be good races in both conferences for playoff spots!

Ran across http://www.hockeyfights.com not only do they put together all the fights from each days action and you can vote on the winner they have team news and such. Been having some fun suffing through the fights, all good quality video as well!

Finally my Pens beat those cross-state rivals the Flyers!! But it was tense throughout, especially the ending!! I'm so impressed with Malkin's play and leadership-he's really turned his game up 2 notches since Sid got hurt. You were right, MED-they have enough depth (so far) to carry them through until Crosby comes back. Big question is-who's in goal when Fluery comes back, him or Conklin? I say Conklin because of his puck-handling skills (except for that late screw-up today) and the team really gets out of their own end smoothly because of it. We'll see....

You have to ride Conklin on this run, he has played well enough to deserve it and Fluery is the "future" in goal so he will get his shot. Give the vet his chance to continue the rest of the year and teh postseason, IMO.

Sens acquire Stillman, Commodore

February 11, 2008
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA (TICKER) -- With the February 26 trade deadline still two weeks away, the Ottawa Senators have juggled their roster.

The Senators on Monday acquired left wing Cory Stillman and defenseman Mike Commodore from the Carolina Hurricanes for defenseman Joe Corvo and right wing Patrick Eaves.

Stillman is enjoying a solid season, recording 21 goals and 25 assists in 55 games for the Hurricanes, However, he has cooled off recently, registering only seven points in the 2008 calendar year.

According to TSN of Canada, Stillman, who won Stanley Cups with Tampa Bay in 2004 and Carolina in 2006, waived the no-trade clause in his contract.

Commodore, also a member of the Hurricanes' Stanley Cup-winning team, has registered three goals and nine assists in 41 games for Carolina this season.

Commodore and Stillman are scheduled to become free agents on July 1.

Corvo has played in 51 of Ottawa's 56 games this season, collecting six goals and 21 assists while playing on the Senators' top power-play unit.

Eaves returned to Ottawa's lineup on January 15 after missing 24 games with a separated shoulder suffered at Buffalo on November 21. He has played in 26 contests this season, recording four goals and six assists.

"We're pleased to acquire a very good, young player in Patrick and address a need for a mobile defenseman who can move the puck on the power play like Joe," Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said.

"We are very thankful to Cory and Mike as two great contributors to the Hurricanes, including during our Stanley Cup run in 2006."

Ottawa, which lost to Anaheim in the Stanley Cup finals last season, is first overall in the Eastern Conference with 72 points - three ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

While outside the top eight in the Eastern Conference, the Hurricanes are just one point behind first-place Washington in the Southeast Division.

Sound advice. The other night on Versus between periods Brian Engblom and Keith Jones were "discussing" this and it got a little heated! Engblom said that Conklin is playing so well that he deserves to stay in there, while Jones said that Fleury had 40 wins last season and shouldn't lose his job to injury. Conklin plays the puck much better and jumpstarts the team breaking out of their own end better than Fleury. It should be interesting!

The NHL really does have a good future if they can just get over the darn TV problems. For the hardcore fans their will be plenty of talented players to watch for years to come!

In this week's 10 Degrees, we count down the top franchise builders -- under-25 players you would want to build your franchise around today. This list is so good, Cam Ward, Zach Parise, Patrick Kane, Eric Staal, Mike Richards, Rick Nash and Jason Spezza didn't make the cut.

10. Ryan Getzlaf, C, Born: May 10, 1985
On a team with a world-class goaltender and two future Hall of Fame defensemen, it's easy to get lost in the shuffle; but Ryan Getzlaf is a franchise player in his own right. At 22, Getzlaf was a key component in the Anaheim Ducks' championship run last spring. The physical center had seven goals and 17 points during the postseason and provided the necessary presence along the boards and in front of the net that all winning teams need. Offensively, Getzlaf is improving each season and is on pace to be in the league's top 10 in both assists and plus/minus. In conjunction with his gritty style and strong two-way play, he is a cornerstone any coach would love to have.

9. Carey Price, G, Born: Aug. 16, 1987
If you want to start your team from the net out, Carey Price is your guy. The 20-year-old has already shown why he is expected to be the next great goalie for the Montreal Canadiens. In 22 games this season, he has a 10-8-3 record and 2.83 goals-against average. Selected fifth overall in the 2005 draft, Price's maturity and size are what strike you most. Much like Ken Dryden and Patrick Roy, Price eats up so much of the net with his 6-foot-3 frame. Throw in his quick reflexes and ability to play angles, and this is one can't-miss prospect that promises to be a franchise goalie for years to come.

8. Paul Stastny, C, Born: Dec. 27, 1985
Probably the most underrated player on this list, Paul Stastny will be the perfect player to take over in Colorado once Joe Sakic calls it quits. Stastny has already proven to be a point-per-game player with excellent defensive skills. Not nearly as flashy as others on the list, Stastny is just as effective at playing special teams and moving the puck. Like his Hall of Fame father, Peter, he is tough to knock off the puck and has the grit to be a star in this league. Don't be surprised if Paul is able to do something his father couldn't, and that's win a championship.

7. Jonathan Toews, C, Born: April 29, 1988
The youngest player on our list who could turn out to be one of the best. Jonathan Toews was on pace for a 33-goal rookie season before suffering a knee injury in January. Toews and teammate Patrick Kane should provide the Blackhawks with two franchise-type players. Unlike Kane, Toews is already a two-way player with the necessary size to thrive in this physical league. As impressive as Toews is offensively, his play away from the puck, especially in his own end, is what sets him apart from his peers. He is a complete player with more offensive upside than Getzlaf or Parise, better defensive skills than Nash and as many leadership qualities as Richards. Oh, and by the way, he is at least three years younger than all of those players.

6. Ilya Kovalchuk, LW, Born: April 15, 1983
Barely eligible for this list is the elder statesman, Ilya Kovalchuk. Yes, he is much older than, say, Kane, but the winger has the potential to be a superstar for at least another decade. In five NHL seasons, Kovalchuk has averaged 40 goals for the Atlanta Thrashers. He is on pace for 56 this season. His scoring instincts rival Alexander Ovechkin's. His touch around the net, speed and grit make Kovalchuk the total package. And for a franchise player, you also want durability, and Kovalchuk's bullish 225-pound frame has missed only six games in the past four seasons.

5. Erik Johnson, D, Born: March 21, 1988
If you like Scott Stevens, you'll love Erik Johnson as a cornerstone for your team. The first overall pick of the 2006 draft is a physical force with a bullet of a shot from the point. It's rare when a defenseman can make an NHL team as a teenager, but Johnson has poise and puck-moving ability beyond his years. Measuring in at 6-foot-4, 222 pounds, he is a 19-year-old boy trapped in a man's body. Even as a rookie, Johnson is already a plus player for the St. Louis Blues. And like Stevens, Johnson saves his best for when it matters most: His three goals this season are all game winners.

4. Evgeni Malkin, F, Born: July 31, 1986
Evgeni Malkin is the franchise player anywhere else but Pittsburgh, where he lives in Sidney Crosby's shadow. Malkin has carried the Penguins since Crosby's injury last month, proving he can be the "star" when called on. Malkin has incredible size, strength, vision and puck-handling skills and would be perfect for a team trying to build up the middle. He also has the versatility to play all three forward positions, which can be a nightmare for opposing coaches. Malkin is an underrated defensive player who is still learning the nuances of the game. Expect him to be Crosby's sidekick in Pittsburgh for some time, somewhat reminiscent of Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr.

3. Dion Phaneuf, D, Born: April 10, 1985
It's hard to believe a rookie could lead all defensemen in hits, but it's true. During the 2005-06 season, Dion Phaneuf left his mark, literally, at age 20, piling up highlight-reel hits and striking fear across the league. Now the Flames defenseman is a battle-tested veteran who will be vying for Norris trophies, as well as MVP honors. In last year's ESPN.com NHL players' survey, 43 percent of players who responded chose Phaneuf as the league's hardest hitter. To complement his body checks, Phaneuf has a booming shot from the point. Two seasons ago, he became only the third NHL rookie defenseman to score 20 goals, joining Barry Beck and Brian Leetch. With Phaneuf, you get a physical defenseman with scoring ability and leadership qualities. Not a bad way to start a franchise.

2. Alexander Ovechkin, LW, Born: Sept. 17, 1985
If anyone can give Wayne Gretzky's record of 92 goals in a season a run, it's Alexander Ovechkin. Since entering the league in 2005-06, no one has scored more goals than the Washington Capitals forward. On pace for a career high in goals and points, this scoring machine will only get better as the Caps surround him with more talent. Few players seem to enjoy the game and show as much desire as Ovechkin. No wonder the Capitals opened their wallets and made the Russian star the NHL's first $100 million player. With his unique blend of speed, size and scoring, Ovechkin is the rare franchise player that can attract new fans to the game.

1. Sidney Crosby, C, Born: Aug. 7, 1987
Sidney Crosby has been hyped as one of the all-time greats since he was 13. So far, he has lived up to the billing. Last summer, a month before turning 20, he was honored as the league's MVP and scoring champ. To the casual fan, Crosby has become the face of the NHL. Some players would find that a burden, but he has embraced the responsibility with class and dignity, following in the shadows of Gretzky and Lemieux.

Picking Crosby over Ovechkin as the ultimate franchise builder really was a toss-up. But considering Sid is two years younger, why not go with the youngest superstar in the league?

The bottom line is we can expect both players to help grow the game, win championships and evolve into two of the biggest stars and "franchise" players the game has ever seen.

Well it looks like Peter the Great might hang them up for good. He put his body through so much and it just can not take it anymore. Fopa and Rod Smith are two great athletes that many people should look up to and fans should be greatfull to of had both in Denver!

Former NHL MVP Peter Forsberg, who has been hampered by foot and ankle injuries in recent years, is unlikely to play in the NHL this season, his agent said Monday.

"The prospect of Peter having enough confidence about the foot/skate issue to play for the rest of the NHL season does not look good at this time," Forsberg's agent Don Baizley told The Canadian Press. "As a result, the teams have been advised that it is unlikely he will return to the NHL this season."

Forsberg, who won two Stanley Cups with Colorado, was being courted by several teams including the Philadelphia Flyers. He spent 1½ seasons in Philadelphia and was the team captain last season until he was traded to Nashville.

Before Monday's news, Forsberg had rejected the Ducks, Stars, Red Wings, Predators, Flames, Penguins and Sharks, which left the Flyers, Avalanche, Senators, Canucks, Blackhawks and Wild in the running for his services, according to numerous reports.

Forsberg hasn't played more than 60 games in a season since suiting up for 75 games in 2002-03 with the Avalanche. He also helped lead Sweden to Olympic gold medals in Lillehammer in 1994 and Turin in 2006.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Melrose chat from today:

Buzzmaster: (2:58 PM ET ) Barry Melrose will be here soon! Keep sending in your questions!

Barry Melrose: (3:02 PM ET ) The races are unbelievable and it looks like it will go down to the deadline.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
scatch(NY): Barry, do you think Phoenix will make a move to help their chances to make the playoffs this year?

Barry Melrose: (3:03 PM ET ) I do not think so. I think they are working with a plan that revolves around young guys. I do not see them spending big on players. The plan so far is working well with the young guys as they are near a playoff spot. So I do not think they will go after players.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Craig Charlotte, NC: Barry, a five goal lead? You have to be kidding me...a five goal lead? I have faith in my NYR, but a five goal lead?

Barry Melrose: (3:05 PM ET ) To show how rare it is, it has only happened 9 times. This is the first time it has happened to the Canadiens who have been around for 100 years. I think the Rangers will make the playoffs, but this loss may stay with them for a while. And I am very disappointed with the leadership on the Rangers, for allowing that collpase to happen.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scott - Atlanta: Is Hossa going to be dealt? If so, do the Thrashers have enough offense outside of Kovy to win the Southeast?

Barry Melrose: (3:06 PM ET ) It looks like Hossa will be dealt, because they have tried everything to sing him and nothing has worked. Even he said there is a slim chance they would resign him. If they lose him will they make the playoffs? I just do not think so. It will be very hard for them to make the postseason if Hossa leaves.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jack: Hey Barry loved when you said coact to coast peanut butter and toast a month ago, when describing a length of the ice goal. You should trademakr that. it was classic. Your thoughts in the Isles?

Barry Melrose: (3:08 PM ET ) I am very impressed with the Isles; they won a big game last night. They had four regulars out and they still found a way to win. They have heart and character. I am very impressed by this team.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paul B (Manistee, MI) : When Hasek comes back, will he be the starting goalie for the Wings in the playoffs?

Barry Melrose: (3:09 PM ET ) Well that depends on Osgood, and he is not playing very well right now. Goaltending has been an issue, but so has Hasek groin injury. Right now goaltending and injuries seems to be the achilles heel of the mighty Red Wings right now. We'll have to wait and see.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alan (Fredonia, NY): Does Campbell stay a Sabre? If not, where do you see him going?

Barry Melrose: (3:10 PM ET ) I think they will trade him. They cannot afford to lose him for nothing, like they did in the past. It will be very tough trading him, but I just do not think you can let an asset like that go. I think they will try very hard to resign him up to the deadline and if that does not work they will trade him.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JJ (Albuquerque): Hey Barry you should at least get 45 mins a chat! Is there any chance the Avs make a move for say bringing back Tanguay or get a Hossa?

Barry Melrose: (3:12 PM ET ) I think the Avs are trying to make a move, with all the injuries they have, They need somoen who can put the puck in the net. But I do not see them trading one of their great young players for a rental. So that is a tough situation. Buit I do think they are talking to Hossa and other forwards who are available. So they are in the talks, but I just do not know if they will be willing to part with the young players it will take to get those top forwards.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Justin (Philadelphia): Should we stick a fork in the Flyers?

Barry Melrose: (3:14 PM ET ) No. But something has to change quickly. They played better in the shootout lost recently. They play SJ tonight, who has lost 5 in a row, so now is a good chance to turn things around. The Gagne loss was big, but look for them to make a move soon; and I also see them making the playoffs. I still think they are one of the top 8 teams in the East.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chris (Nashville, TN): If you were the Predators, would you try to get a forward before the trade deadline?

Barry Melrose: (3:15 PM ET ) If I am them Predators, I am gun shy, because they got killed last year with Forsberg. They gave up three players for Forsberg and it did not work out well. I may try to add a depth guy but I would not go crazy and get in a bidding war for Hossa, especially after last season.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tony (Detroit, MI): Coming out of the recent GMs meeting, do you see any significant changes (e.g. insitgator, 3pt system) for the NHL in the near future?

Barry Melrose: (3:18 PM ET ) I hope things will change quickly. My biggest thing is the goaltending equipment. It is too big, and I want to see it get smaller. The equipment was meant to protect the goaltender, not help the goaltender make the save. I think the rules have gotten out of control, as far as the equipment. I think the instigator rule should change, and I also do not think a team should get a point for a loss. Right now there are still 29 teams who think they can make the playoffs because of 3 point games. So those are some things I would like to see changed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brian (Washington, DC): What are your thoughts on the St. Louis Blues? Will they make the playoffs? What do they need to consistently perform up to their potential?

Barry Melrose: (3:20 PM ET ) I do not think they will make it. They have games in hand, but I think they will just miss. They need to keep progressing with their great young players. They need to add some guys; but they are in a good positon going forward. They need to try and sign Salvador or Jackman, and trade the one they cannot keep. They have had a very good year, but I do not see them as one of the top 8 teams in the West.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone (San Jose, CA): What's wrong with the sharks?!

Barry Melrose: (3:22 PM ET ) That is a good questions. I think they are not passionate enough. They should never lose 5 games in a row. When you compare them to the Isles, who are playing great with all the injuries, it is crazy that they would lose 5 in a row. They have so much talent, and I am very disappointed in them. I think, talent wise, they are one of the top three teams in the NHL.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dobber (Orlando, FL): Do the Devils need to make a trade to have a serious shot at representing the East? Their powerplay is ridiculous.

Barry Melrose: (3:23 PM ET ) Well I do not think they need to make a trade to have a shot at the East. I think they would like to add some players to improve the Power Play, maybe Campbell.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike (Pittsburgh): Hey Barry, some love for the pens! Wanted to hear your thoughts on the Pens and how they will fare down the stretch with the return of Sid and Fleury?? Also, if his pace continues, Malkin for Art Ross??

Barry Melrose: (3:26 PM ET ) Malkin has been great. he is probably the main reason the Pens are where they are. He has evolved into a great player. But he cannot fall back when Syd and Fleurry get back. Pittsburgh is a great team. They need to get a second line that can score, and with Syd's return maybe they can put Malkin on the second line. But Malkin has really showed the world how great he is with the injury to Crosby, and once they make the playoffs they have a great shot at making a very deep run.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jeffrey Los Angeles: What are the Canadiens going to do? Not signing Souray saved their season

Barry Melrose: (3:27 PM ET ) Well they are supposed to be one of the teams going after an elite forwards. I think they are the best team in the East, and can make it to the finals, so I think they will be looking to add another forward.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tucson, Arizona: Do you think Dallas has a legitimate chance of going deep in the playoffs this year?

Barry Melrose: (3:28 PM ET ) They are playing as well as anyone, depsite the tough loss to Calgary. I think they would like another winger to play with Madano to help scoring. If they can add that they are for real in the West. But they need to add scoring to comepte with the Ducks and Detroit in the West.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carl Raleigh: What in the world are the Hurricanes to do? Hockey fans are going crazy wondering what team will come out night after night!

Barry Melrose: (3:29 PM ET ) They are an interesting story. The Southeast will be like this until the end of the year. I think they are the best team in that division and that they will eventually prevail, but the team needs to step up with the loss of BrindAmour.

Sorry ECF, I felt the same way last night when Phoenix scored the goal to tie the game with 2.8 seconds left. The truth was Doan had Theo beat in the shootout but lost the puck at the last sec. It's tough esp since we love out teams so much. Hang in there, hope you have a good week.

It's very frustrating but it is something that hopefully "sticks in the team's craw" as well and inspires them to take it to the next level. I didn't see the Pens game, but when you look at the stats and the 3 goal lead you think "how the heck didn't they win that game"? But they went 1 for 6 on the power play, let the Sens come back from 3 goals down, and I'm sure that it frustrates them too. Ryan Malone hit the post in overtime right before they let the game-winning goal in...UGGHHH! Hopefully all of our teams improve from this!! AND LOOK OUT HERE COMES MED AND HIS HURRICANES!!!! New life for our buddy from Mass!!! Maybe this is the start of a winning streak for them!!

Well another afternoon game and another loss! But I have to look at it this way as some on the Pens message board put it; they got 4 out of 6 points vs. three top teams (Montreal, Ottawa and San Jose). They also played back-to-back afternoon games which I'm not too crazy about. But New Jersey keeps on winning and picking up 2 points while we settle for 1 and they are starting to pull away from us. But like Med says they're still in good shape. And Fluery was recalled so that'll either be good or bad, and hopefully Crosby is 7-10 days away. But they still can't blow leads like they did yesterday and Thursday against Montreal and expect to go far...

Good luck to your teams this week guys...GO CANES beat the hell out of the Devils!! :D

Its Thursday, that means it is Barry time:

Barry Melrose: (3:03 PM ET ) Great trade deadline! A lot of temas changed drastically. I hope your team improved!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pete, Floral Park, NY: I've been telling all my friends that I truly believe the Rangers will finish first in the Eastern Conference. What do you think the chances are of it happening?

Barry Melrose: (3:04 PM ET ) Not very good. The Rangers have not shown us anything to make us think they will go on a hot streak. Winning two and then losing two will not ensure first place. Right now I would be worried about getting into the playoffs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
craig, NY NY: Have you heard anything re the strength of Forsberg's ankle?

Barry Melrose: (3:05 PM ET ) I think time will tell. He skating now with the AVs, and there is not time-frame as far as when he plays. Obviosuly he feels good about it. But I think the Avs are hoping he will play in a few weeks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jester (Pittsburgh): How would you draw the lines up in pittsburgh with a healthy Crosby?

Barry Melrose: (3:06 PM ET ) Well I would keep Malkin, Malone and Sekoya together, and then go with Crosby, Hossa and maybe Roberts. Malone and Malkin have been so good together you would hate to have to break them up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Michael (Connecticut): Do you think Pittsburgh has a shot winning Stanley cup with Hossa on board? It's seem a big risk move for Pittsburgh.. I dont think Pittsbugh has a shot to re-sign him if they dont win it all?

Barry Melrose: (3:08 PM ET ) Well they are taking a chance, and I love it. They are trying to win the Cup., It is easy to try and not to win and they could easily win the wide-open East. And Once in the final anything can happen. Yes if they lose in the first round it looks like a very bad trade, but I think every fan in Pittsburgh is happy with this trade.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steven (StL): What do the Red Wings need to do to snap out of their funk they're in?

Barry Melrose: (3:09 PM ET ) They neeed to get guys back. They have a lot of injuries, and Lindstrom is close to returning and that is the main thing. They have a bunch of games to get everyone healthy. When everyone is back they will be one of the best teams in the West again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mcloving (San Jose): so sharks in the finals with cambell now?..sharks will be eating cambell soup if he resign with the sharks you think he would sing contrac extension

Barry Melrose: (3:11 PM ET ) Well I am worried about anyone who's name is McLovin. But SJ is a very talented team who has everything. If they get bounced early, it is a huge upset. I think they are capable of winning the West.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
craig, NY NY: Where does Jarome Iginla rank on your list of Hart trophy candidates?

Barry Melrose: (3:12 PM ET ) There are a lot of guys with Lindstrom, Ovechkin, Malkin, Luongo etc. Iginla is there, without a doubt. But I do not think he is in the top three; but he is in the top seven or eight.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steve (Norman, OK): With the Canes up 6 points on Washington, does it look like the Southeastern division race might finally be getting settled?

Barry Melrose: (3:14 PM ET ) I do think the Canes will win the Southeast. But Washington has played so well that they might not win the Southeast but they may sneak into that 8th spot. The East has changed a lot recently, and two teams from the Southeast may get in. With Huet and Federov coming, this is a good team. Washington has done a good job.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
john long island: why wont boston lose?

Barry Melrose: (3:15 PM ET ) Interesting. They have been a great story. They play as a team and have great goaltending and good special teams. They are overachievers. With all the injuries they could have gone in the tank. I think it is a great story, and Boston fans should be proud.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dan (San Jose): Yeah they've got talent, but did the Sharks trade for some toughness and heart? Because that's the reason they've lost in the past couple of years. Why shouldn't I be sceptical Barry?

Barry Melrose: (3:17 PM ET ) You should be, because you are right. They got Shelly, a tough guy, and Campbell plays hard. But yes, they have been a major disappointment in year's past in the playoffs, and this year in the regular season, and you should be skeptical.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steve, Van.: Barry I hope you watched Avs @ Nucks yesterday, because that was one hell of a hockey game!!

Barry Melrose: (3:19 PM ET ) Yeah it was a playoff game. The intensity level was high, and the game was played very well. It is going to be a great finish, because the Avs are much improved and Van. did not address their goalscoring problems, which showed last night. And I think these teams play four more times and it will be very exciting to watch.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
James (Staten Island): Were the rangers competing for Marion Hossa and if they were why didnt they get him?

Barry Melrose: (3:20 PM ET ) I do not think they were in the mix, because they do not have the assets, young players, teams want. They were not going to trade Staal, and after that they do not have many trade options. So I do not think they were really in the Hossa sweepstakes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evan (Arlington Heights, IL): What's your feeling on the Hawks with all the young talent that we have?

Barry Melrose: (3:22 PM ET ) I love the Hawks. I am not sure they will make the postseason this year. But they have great kids, and they will have a high pick if they miss the postseason. But they are fun to watch, they fight, they hit and score goals, and I think they will be a very good team for years to come.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tommy, Michigan: Barry how surprised were you that the wings didn't make a bigger move before the deadline

Barry Melrose: (3:23 PM ET ) I think they tried, that just did not happen. It is very hard to make deals with the salary cap, and Detroit does not have a lot of young guys to move, so that makes it very hard to make deals happen.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don (Albany, NY): Are the Kings going to outlose Tampa down the stretch? The Lightning have put together a nice losing streak but I think LA take them.

Barry Melrose: (3:25 PM ET ) I agree. I think at the end of the year LA will be the worst team in the NHL, and you want the bottom three so you can get the first-overall pick. I think the bottom three will be LA, Tampa, and the third spot will be close. But last overall will come down to Tampa and LA.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tom(Texas): What's your take on the Stars? Can they raise the cup this season?

Barry Melrose: (3:26 PM ET ) The Stars are a good team, with great goaltending, a great defensive team, and they added Richards to a good group of forwards. They are one of three favorites to win the West with SJ and Detroit, along with my darkhorse of Minnesota.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
James (Staten Island): What is with the Senators sudden problems getting consistent wins?

Barry Melrose: (3:27 PM ET ) They have alot of dressing-room problems. They got a coach fired, Emery has been a distraction, and apart from the No. 1 line, no one has played well of late. They have been very average recently, and much of it has to do with the dressing room.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dan (Alexandria, VA): Do you think that Fedorov will be a contributing member in the more offensive oriented Caps game as opposed to the Blue Jackets? And just how much gas does he have left in the tank?

Barry Melrose: (3:29 PM ET ) Well I hope he socres more for the Caps because he did not score a lot for the Jackets. But this is a good pick-up because it does not cost too much, and he may sprak Ovechkin to play even better, since Ovechkin idolized him when he was at his best. This may be a very good fit.

Med has loved the game since 1979 when I was eight years old.

Was a Bruins fan as a kid and then stared to like the Whalers in 1986 and have followed them to North Carolina and like them as much as I do the Broncos. Still like Boston as well.

there are only a few teams I do not like.
the Dirty Flyers
The crybaby Lindy Ruff Sabres and thats about it.

I even respect the Canadiens and as I kid I depised them as they
broke my heart too much

I was a Stars rooter vs Buffalo in 1999 as I can not stand
Dominik Hasek. never liked him and never will.

I grew up outside of Philly, so I followed the Flyers, but was more of a NorthStars and Bruins fan. Can't really say why those two teams attracted me, but they did. I played goalie as a kid and in high school and I was a Jon Casey fan and Cam Neely was my favorite player.

Somewhere along the way, I drifted toward being a NorthStars fan more than Bruins and then they moved to Dallas a year after I did and it was perfect.

I didn't realize that Hossa and Glen Murray had a knee-to-knee collision last night and Hossa will be out about a week! What a great start that is! Just saw that on the Pens site-lucky that it wasn't worse!

My Bruins are on a roll....6 wins in a row...playing intense hockey with sound defense. Giving up very few second shots.

Milan Lucic - 6' 4" 220 lbs. 19 years old. Reminds me of a young Cam Neely.

The kid can throw a punch.

You can add me to the list of those who love hockey. Thread can now read "6 Fans who care".

It's now crazy time in the NHL with almost every game meaning something.

How about Jack Johnson's hit on Ryan Smyth? I thought he was dead.

I'll give you two guesses and the first doesn't count.

I live in Toronto and have never seen my team lift Lord Stanley.

You mean you are a Vancover Canucks fan.... jk

God love you. A real leafs fan :salute:

I remember back in 93 when I thought they were going to play the Habs in the Final and then Gretzky pulled one out of his ass in game 7.

back in the days.

hey dont feel bad my team had to move before winning a Cup

(from HFD to Carolina)

at least I was a Leaf fan on Sat night when they helped my Canes out

2nd fav is Boston.

really only hate Philly and Buffalo. the rest of the league is okay with me.

They're going to tease us once again. They'll go on a run (which they're doing right now) and fall just short of the playoffs. This in turn will cost them a lottery pick in a very strong draft year.

Saying that, Mats is on fire and Toskala is playing as good right now as any goalie in the NHL.

As for '93 I still have nightmares of the Gretzky high stick on Gilmour in game 6 (which wasn't called by the way).

I've never seen a team get a worse bite from the injury bug than my Avs had this season. There's probably only been maybe one or two games where our three best players were on the roster (the good part, anyway) and got ice time. Just plain bad luck (and one unfriendly wall, in Mr. Smyth's case).

it does suck. I can related as my Canes have been missing 2 of their top players for the rest of the year in Rod Brindamour and Justin Williams

Also the Bruins have been hit bad as well, not having Bergeron basically all season and Alberts their 2nd best D has been hurt, both do to stupid Flyer cheap shots

Don't even think of saying the word injury!!!! Marc-Andre Fluery, Gary Roberts and Sid the Kid so far this season for me. Fluery FINALLY is back, Sid is still out, and there are some reports saying that Roberts may be finished with hockey from this broken leg injury! Don't even THINK of the word injury or we'll all lose someone else!!! :D

Svatos is out for the season with a torn ACL, Clark still recovering from a bad shoulder seperation, Symth out after being hit into the side of the bench concussion, Cody McCormick Chest Contusion, Cumminsky/Sakic/Stats just got back hockey is a physical game and it sure has taken its toll on players this year! Here is to a good playoff run for all!

Man, that's just awful for Svatos. He had been growing into one of my favorite players, especially after his crazy rookie season. I always used him on NHL 2005, and he would be my leading scorer because of his speed rating :coffee:.
