In what in many ways has been the season of his pro football life, Broncos outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil has put himself in line for his first Pro Bowl selection.
Oh, and this year's NFL all- star game will be played in his hometown.
"If I deserve it, I deserve it," Dumervil said. "If not, it's OK. I'd be in Miami either way."
The NFL is having the Pro Bowl in the Super Bowl city this season as a test to see if more of the league's marquee players will play in the game or if it will stir more fan interest. As a result, the game will be played at Land Shark Stadium the weekend before the Super Bowl is played there.
Dumervil, despite having at least 8 1/2 sacks in three of four seasons, has not been named to a Pro Bowl by his peers. In his first year at outside linebacker in the Broncos' 3-4 defense, he leads the league in sacks with 14.
The AFC and NFC Pro Bowl rosters will be announced Dec. 29.
Quick work.
Former Chargers wide receiver Chris Chambers has been with the Chiefs only since Nov. 3, but he already is one of quarterback Matt Cassel's favorite targets.
"He's added a playmaker to their offense, no question," said Broncos defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. "He's been a guy the quarterback feels confident in on a short notice and been very effective. Even watching the game Sunday, it was clear he was part of the plan early."
In Chambers' four games with the Chiefs, he has 17 receptions for 319 yards and three touchdowns. That kind of production means the Broncos may match Champ Bailey on Chambers for significant parts of Sunday's game.
Grow up in a hurry.
Of the Broncos' top three tacklers on their special-teams units, two are rookies. Rookie safety Darcel McBath leads with 10 tackles on the coverage teams, while rookie safety David Bruton is third with six.
"I don't consider them rookies anymore. I told them that in a meeting the other day," special-teams coach Mike Priefer said. "They've got 15 games under their belt."
Footnotes.
Safety Brian Dawkins (ankle) was held out of Thursday's practice, the second consecutive day he did not participate. McBath was in Dawkins' spot with the starters. . . . The Chiefs held out running back Kolby Smith (ankle) from Thursday's practice. Smith had practiced Wednesday. . . . The Broncos practiced outside Thursday with temperatures in the teens.
