In what in many ways has been the season of his pro football life, Broncos outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil has put himself in line for his first Pro Bowl selection.

Oh, and this year's NFL all- star game will be played in his hometown.

"If I deserve it, I deserve it," Dumervil said. "If not, it's OK. I'd be in Miami either way."

The NFL is having the Pro Bowl in the Super Bowl city this season as a test to see if more of the league's marquee players will play in the game or if it will stir more fan interest. As a result, the game will be played at Land Shark Stadium the weekend before the Super Bowl is played there.

Dumervil, despite having at least 8 1/2 sacks in three of four seasons, has not been named to a Pro Bowl by his peers. In his first year at outside linebacker in the Broncos' 3-4 defense, he leads the league in sacks with 14.

The AFC and NFC Pro Bowl rosters will be announced Dec. 29.

Quick work.

Former Chargers wide receiver Chris Chambers has been with the Chiefs only since Nov. 3, but he already is one of quarterback Matt Cassel's favorite targets.

"He's added a playmaker to their offense, no question," said Broncos defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. "He's been a guy the quarterback feels confident in on a short notice and been very effective. Even watching the game Sunday, it was clear he was part of the plan early."

In Chambers' four games with the Chiefs, he has 17 receptions for 319 yards and three touchdowns. That kind of production means the Broncos may match Champ Bailey on Chambers for significant parts of Sunday's game.

Grow up in a hurry.

Of the Broncos' top three tacklers on their special-teams units, two are rookies. Rookie safety Darcel McBath leads with 10 tackles on the coverage teams, while rookie safety David Bruton is third with six.

"I don't consider them rookies anymore. I told them that in a meeting the other day," special-teams coach Mike Priefer said. "They've got 15 games under their belt."

Footnotes.

Safety Brian Dawkins (ankle) was held out of Thursday's practice, the second consecutive day he did not participate. McBath was in Dawkins' spot with the starters. . . . The Chiefs held out running back Kolby Smith (ankle) from Thursday's practice. Smith had practiced Wednesday. . . . The Broncos practiced outside Thursday with temperatures in the teens.

He can stay at home instead of a hotel because he will be playing at least one weekend and hopefully two!

He better not be playing in the Pro Bowl if we win the AFC Championship game.

If he keeps up his current pace he should set a new record for the team in sacks. If that isn't Pro Bowl worthy I'm not sure what would be. He's shown he's worthy to me. Of course it would be much better to have him in Fla for the real game. :D

One of the guys over at MHR put together a great article about Doom. It looks at his value to the team and what his sacks have done for them this year. He breaks down each sack and looks at it's value based on the quarter it was gotten, what down it was, and where the opponent was on the field at the time it happened. Great read.

Here are the first few paragraphs.

It's good to be the king--of sacks.

That's because sacks are critical in today's NFL. Sacks have become such an important part of football, that today they are cause for orgasmic euphoria on the part of players and fans. It seems that this single act of taking the opposing quarterback down two-to-ten yards behind the line of scrimmage is almost on par with touchdowns themselves. Gyrating, break-dancing, and in the case of Shawn Merriman, outright seizures disguised as celebrations are in order after just a single sack.

Deacon Jones might have fathered the sack. Lawrence Taylor might have raised it through adolescence. And Michael Strahan might have helped it pay for college. But today, every roster is filled with a least one player trying to make a real man out of the sack.

That's because some sacks are hellaciously important. Not because Ryan Clady (wlmailhtml:{60222F7E-280D-43AE-91B1-C5E77AA7EB29}mid://00000021/!x-usc:http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/4107/Ryan_Clady) makes a lot of money defending against them. Not because Michael Lewis says so. But because a sack has real value.

So much value, in fact, that the Denver Broncos (wlmailhtml:{60222F7E-280D-43AE-91B1-C5E77AA7EB29}mid://00000021/!x-usc:http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/DEN) should resign Elvis Dumervil (wlmailhtml:{60222F7E-280D-43AE-91B1-C5E77AA7EB29}mid://00000021/!x-usc:http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2920/Elvis_Dumervil)--before the king leaves the building.

The Temple of "Doom"

Let's start by stating the obvious. Elvis Dumervil is taking a run at the record book in 2009. He's going through left tackles like Al Davis goes through 1st-round draft picks. Dumervil is not only flourishing under the Mike Nolan 3-4, he's getting fat on the hog. With 14 sacks, there's an outside chance he could reach Strahan's single season record of 22.5.

With 5 games remaining, Dumervil needs to average 1.7 sacks/game. While this may appear like a lot, it's certainly within the realm of possibility. Dumervil is already averaging 1.2 sacks/game, so he'd need to amp up his current production slightly. But he's not miles behind Strahan's pace. Let's compare Strahan's 2001 season with Dumvervil's 2009 season through 12 weeks. Keep in mind Strahan had a week-12 bye and Dumervil a week-7 bye.

Guys, the players elected to a pro bowl spot who are also scheduled to appear in the super bowl are not going to be played, just get the nod and the honorable mention. They're trying to make the pro bowl worth something this year.
