In the numerical gymnastics that form an NFL quarterback's passer rating, interceptions are crushing parts of the equation.
But much like the passer rating doesn't credit the quarterback who changes a broken play into a positive play by running the ball out of trouble, a passer rating and the interception total don't fully show how a quarterback is or isn't taking care of the ball.
Looking at the total turnovers a quarterback has accounted for is most helpful to see how much punishment he may be taking behind his offensive line, or to see a sort of "lost opportunity" stat to gauge scoring chances that were eliminated by turnovers directly from the quarterback.
In that regard, Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton has been one of the best in the league this season, with just six total turnovers — six interceptions and no lost fumbles. Orton is one of only two passers in the league — Colts star Peyton Manning is the other — to have started every game this year and not lost a fumble.
That puts Orton's totals behind only Vikings star Brett Favre, who has only four total turnovers (one lost fumble and three interceptions). Eagles star Donovan McNabb, who missed two starts, has seven total turnovers (six interceptions, one lost fumble). The Packers' Aaron Rodgers has eight. The Bengals' Carson Palmer, the Chargers' Philip Rivers and the Ravens' Joe Flacco have nine.
All play for teams in the playoff hunt.
Rodgers' total, however, is remarkable in the big picture. He has thrown just five interceptions and lost three fumbles despite being sacked and hit more than any other NFL quarterback this season.
Rodgers has been sacked 44 times — nine more than the No. 2 QB (the Chiefs' Matt Cassel), 34 more than Manning and 29 more than Orton.
That doesn't even take into account the times Rodgers was hurried, hit or harassed on plays that weren't sacks. It's also why the Packers continue to stay in the NFC playoff race, despite their troubles on the offensive line.
The Bears' Jay Cutler and the Panthers' Jake Delhomme, each with 21 total turnovers, are the worst among the league's starters. Jets rookie Mark Sanchez is next at 20. Lions rookie Matthew Stafford has 19.
