Wow!

Novak Djokovic just knocked Roger Federer out of the Australian Open, in 3 straight sets, to set up a final between Djokovic and unseeded Jo-Wilfred Tsonga.

This was a huge game!

I wish I had seen it.

I'm a tennis fan, but I tend to lose interest when Roddick and Blake get knocked out...I love seeing Federer and Nadal go down for once. If Nadal had reached the final, and Federer had not, Nadal would be the World No. 1...and most likely would stay there heading into the French.

Nadal's game against Tsonga was so weird to watch (yay for working for a company that does sports betting, and allows me to watch these things). Nadal was flatter than the average pancake, and had none of his usual flair, or fire.

Djokovic today was a m achine. His serves were impeccable, and apart from a dodgey drop-shot, his game was all around 100% better than Fed's.

It's nice to see that the level of play is finally reaching that of Fed and Nadal's. It's been a bit of a bleak few years in international mens tennis.

I wouldn't doubt if Federer steps away soon. He's done about everything he can do, especially if he wins the Gold Medal he covets this year. I know he's only 26...but if he wins that Gold Medal, the only reason I see him sticking around is to try to win the French. He doesn't seem to be a guy who's all that worried about "legacy."

Rafa went nuts on Sunday. I missed most of it. I saw the first few points and he dispatched of Federer so quick that by the time I got home from Lawrence, they were showing last year's Wimbledon Final. I mean, to dominate a player the caliber of Federer, is just unbelievable.

Roddick is gonna be back at Wimbledon :woot: and he downed Ginepri recently. That serve and volley game of his is gonna win at Wimbledon some day.

Of course, on grass, Federer has all the shots, and not just the big serve...well, we'll see...

Just a couple of days until Wimbledon starts! Predictions people?

I think my boy Nadal is finally going to break through and take it. It helps him that Djoker drew Fed's half of the draw.

Apparently the American television ratings say anything with a Williams sister gets higher ratings. I, personally, don't understand it.

I'd much rather watch Nadal than them, and their stupid father. But, that's jmho.

Yeah, I'm having to follow the Nadal match on SlamTracker on Wimbledon's website. You have to pay them 25 bucks to watch the matches live online, so I'm forced to follow the live stats. I don't know why ESPN isn't doing that Wimbledon live thing they did last week where they showed 6 different live matches on the 701-707 channels. It'd also be nice if they did like at the French Open and let the Tennis channel show some of the matches. I guess that's just too much to ask.

Well, Nadal was less than impressive against Sheuttler. Hopefully he was just saving his energy for Federer because if he plays like that again, Fed will spank him. I do think Nadal will play better on Sunday just because he has to. Should be an epic match.

And I think the reason ESPN didn't show the Fed-Safin match live was because NBC had the exclusive US broadcast rights to show that match. I could be wrong but that's what I think. Or it could just be that they have a love-fest with the Williams sisters. Who knows?

Murray rubs me the wrong way as well. I usually like to see the underdog win, but I think I'll be rooting for Rafa in this one and for a Rafa/Fed meeting in the Finals. It is pretty stupid that they are playing the other semi right now and all those people that paid money to buy tickets won't be able to see both of the semis...but I guess they felt like they had to do it.

GO ANDY!!! I just got done with the match on the DVR. Andy played well all match, but Djokovic was just too good in the 1st set tiebreaker. Novak was just done after that though and Andy just stayed solid until Djoker ran out of gas in the 4th. I guess all the hard work that Andy did in the offseason really is paying dividends as he was still racing around in the 4th. I've seen 3 of his matches so far and he is definitely playing as well as I've ever seen him play. I'm still not sure he has enough firepower and variety to beat the big guns consistently, but he definitely has a chance IMO.

As for Blake, he will never rach the final of a major. He is too inconsistent and too one dimensional. He blew his chance at the US Open a few years ago when he lost to Agassi int he semis in 5. I love Blake and he is one of my favorite players, but he is simply a second tier player and can't hang with the big boys.

The Spanish brat? I was rooting for Fed too, but Nadal is far from a brat. Nadal's last 2 matches were both epic...simply incredible tennis. Props to Fed and Verdasco for pushing Rafa to his limits, but he was just too good. If Rafa can stay healthy he may be able to surpass both Roger and Sampras (sp?...how the hell do you spell his name?) in majors won. I've never really rooted for Nadal, but there is no denying his greatness.

You got Sampras right!

After living in Spain, and getting to see the way he behaves in public when he makes it home, you get a greater respect for him.
I used to not like him so much, but I like the way he has worked his ass off to become the best, changed his game to be able to beat Federer, and worked to have a great game on every surface. That kind of hard work, and the humility he shows in interviews these days really has made me a fan.

I am also a fan of a passionate player, which is probably why Fed and Sampras were never favs of mine.

1989: American Michael Chang comes out of nowhere to win his first and only French Open
1999: American Andre Agassi comes out of nowhere to win his first and only French Open
2009: Andy Roddick to continue the trend?

I agree that Roddick is a huge longshot but who would have thought that Djokovic and Nadal would both be out before the quarters? Nothing that happens in this tournament will surprise me at this point.

IMO, Roddick doesn't have the weapons on clay. Sure, on a good day he can beat anyone... But you don't win Roland Garros on one game... You have to beat some damn good specialist of this surface... And even if you beat one, you often lose some in the battle (if you see what I mean).

The most unbelievable finalist I've seen there is Stefan Edberg... Typically not the kind of player I could have believed to have a chance to win the French... He didn't fit the clay's style...

Anyway, anything could happen... But I don't think Roddick is as gifted as Edberg was... NO offense there... Andy is a very good player... BTW I like the guy and the player... But he misses the little extra thing IMO.

Next step for Monfils is Federer... very interesting game... Federer wasn't at his best yesterday... Monfils is still recovering a knee problem.
Del Potro was amazing against Tsonga... Very good player on clay BTW... May be the best clay's player left with Monfils...
But Federer is still alive...
Will Soderling keep on playing like that?
Very interesting tournament...

Personnally, I was shocked by Nadal's elimination so early... He didn't played well and Soderling made his best game ever.
I like both Federer and Nadal... About style, I prefer Roger... But I like Rafa's warrior mind and his behaviour... He can accept defeat... His press conference after his loss was pretty nice... Sure, he was mad, but he shows humility and said he has to admit he has to play well to win, even on clay... The guy will rebound with this state of mind...

I'm all for Monfils (of course) or Federer to win the French ... But I wouldn't be mad if another one win it... My fav is for now Del Potro... The guy really made a great impression last day...

Monfilis should be the favorite against Federer tomorrow. Monfilis is a great clay-courter and is playing his best tennis right now while Federer is struggling. It all depends on if he has the confidence to beat Federer, because he definitely has the game. Soderling toyed with Davydenko today and if he keeps up that level should easily make the final over Gonzalez or Murray.

As for Nadal, that was one of the top 3 biggest upsets in sport that I have seen in my life. Soderling is just playing absolutely out of his mind right now. The one upside for Nadal, though, is that he can now have some much needed rest for Wimbledon and should be twice as motivated now to make up for his short stay in Paris.

I dunno, Soderling embarrassed an in-form Davydenko. Wouldn't shock me to see him win it. I do agree though, that the Federer-Monfilis winner will be the favorite to win it. As for Del Potro, seeing as he is Federer's bitch he better be praying for Monfilis to take him out.

I'm rooting for Monfils now... But I wouldn't mind if Roger win.
In one hand I'd like to see a french win at Roland Garros (we've been waiting for too long about that - for men) and I like the way Gael is playing with the public... In the other hand, I'd like to see Roger winning his 14th here and win then only Grand Slam he hasn't won yet... Federer is one of the greatest and he would deserve that...
Tough choice then... :D

I didn't think Soderling could beat Davydenko like that... But the guy is unplayable right now... How can you play against a guy who hit so strong always in the court? No way...
I think he'll make the final now...

The 2nd part is more difficult : Federer, Monfils, Del Potro & Robredo are all great players on clay... Very interesting tournament...

I'm mad Sharapova is out... I like watching her ;)

Domination by Roger. I have a gut feeling that Del Potro will take Roger to 5 sets despite how he has been dominated by Fed in the past. Del Potro is playing great...I still expect Fed to pull it out tho. And I think Soderling will take out Gonzo on the other side. Both guys just hit the felt off the ball, but Soderling is stronger on the backhand side IMO.

I was glad to see Serena go down today...can't stand her. I was happy for Kuznetsova that she held it together and pulled it out...she's choked a lot in the past. I expect to see a Kuznetsova/Safina final, and I'll take Safina to win it all...no matter who she plays in the finals.

Honestly, when Roger is playing like that, there are not so many players who can beat him... The 1st set was the key... Roger won and Monfils didn't recover then... I really liked the congratulations between the 2 guys... A lot of respect and friendship. I also liked Gael disponibility despite the defeat... He had a quick interview while quiting the court... And the after game interview of Roger was great too... It's amazing to see such a player talking like that... A lot of humility and respect... Classy.

Del Potro let me a great impression too... I think Roger would better to play like he did against Gael... To start well the game and not make the same game he played against Haas.

I agree, Soderling seems more complete too... Better service... Equal forehand... Better backhand... Better near the net...

It's amazing to know that Roger has only lost ONE game against all 3 others guys left
12-0 against Soderling
5-0 against Del Potro
8-1 (I think) againts Gonzales

I'm for Cibulkova to win the tournament... She's the sexiest of the 4 semi-finalists ;) :D (BTW, she is the ex of Monfils).

At this point, the trophy is Federer's if he wants it IMO. But almost every prediction I've made in this tournament has been wrong so who knows...Well... I hope you're right with the prediction... Now that Monfils is out, I'd like to see Roger win it... Equaling Sampras at Paris and winning the only Grand Slam missing on his record would be priceless... :elefant:

Many tought Roger was struggling... I thought that too... But not after Haas' game... When you're so close to be out and you make it anyway, something happens... May be Roger needed that to become back FEDERER... I was afraid the real Federer would play MOnflis and I was right...
But the tournament is not over... You have 3 guys who have all the weapons to win Roland Garros... IMO the 2 best challengers are Soderling (almost unbeatable when he plays like that - you don't beat Nadal and Davydenko like that on clay only by luck) and Del Potro... But they have never won against Roger and may be it will be a huge psychological advantage... Don't mention all the experience Roger have (22th semi final of a grand Slam  )... None of the others have ever made a grand slam semi if I'm correct... Roger knows he is the fav, but he does know too that he'll have to be Federer to win the French... he is warned...

Go Roger... I cross my fingers for you... It would be so amazing to see you winning here !

Other than Nadal, every player on the tour is scared to death of Federer and every single time someone manages to get a lead on him, they choke it away. Every single time. But, it's also because his game is not easy to be matched up... Monfils told it very well : he has a lot of troubles playing Roger's way of playing...

When Roger is agressive like that and find back his backhand's slice, not many players have the key against that...

In the other hand, Roger has the same problem with Nadal... Because Nadal's balls are fast, heavy and so lifted he has to play farer in the court than usual... And when he tries to be more agressive he takes more risks and is less accurate because of Nadal's way of hitting balls.

I think you don't win 14 grand slam and have 20 finals only because players are scared by you... He played against some legends and won anyway (Agassi and so on)... Some very young players are coming now and can't yet dominate him now... But I don't think someone like Del Potro is really "scared" by Roger... Roger is one the best ever and certainly one of the most complete player ever.

The final was disappointing though... Soderling really doesn't know how to play Roger... BTW, Roger explained that Soderling won against guy who usually plays farer in the court (Nadal, Davydenko & Gonzales) than he does and that was certainly the key to beat Soderling...

I was really surprised by wowen's final... Safina really blew it up...

I didn't say he won 14 GS finals because people were scared of him. I just think he is winning more now because people are scared of him. He was outplayed at the beginning of his matches against PHM, Haas, and Del Potro in this tournament but once all 3 of them got the lead they just collapsed and let Federer take it. Same with Berdych back at the Australian Open. And as for today, Soderling was defeated before he stepped onto the court. It's just disappointing to say the least. It would be nice for a change for someone other than Nadal to step up and challenge Federer in a major. It's being said that Nadal's knee is bothering him again and his status at Wimbledon is questionable. If he can't play or if he isn't at full strength, they might as well just hand Federer the trophy now.

I won't deny Roger has a huge psychologial advantage over almost every players now...

PHM? Well... He's French, so being the underdog, he should have won ;)
Haas? IMO he was ahead because Roger played awfully... When he found back his real play, he was too good for Tommy.
Del Potro? yeah, I will agree with you... But was it only mental? I think Roger played a bit better, Juan Martin had some physical pb (he began to be tired), and mentally, he saw Roger came back in the game and certainly the "fear" came then.

Well... against Soderling, yeah you're right... And Roger played very well very soon in the game to use this mental advantages...

You know, it's always the same... His skills allow him to have a mental advantage over his opponents and his mental advantage helps him to use better his skills...

Talking about the English... yeah, Roger is the best player there since many years.... Nadal's win was also explained by the fact the surface was slowed down that year : they compared Roger's service through the years and showed that at the same speed, last year, the ball was losing more than 1 metre... And Rafa also really improved there...
IMO, after winning RG & his 14th Grand Slam, I wouldn't be surprised if he breaks the record at Wimbledon...

Well Karlovic beat Federer at Cincy last year but that was just best of 3. Fed can beat him in this current form but the key is not to slip up in tiebreaks. This is the best Karlovic has ever played though so whoever beats him will have to be playing very well. He went the entire 4th set against Tsonga without losing a single point on serve which is amazing. Ivo usually tires at the end of 5-setters but he appeared to get even better as the match went on which is very unusual for him and very scary for anyone else. I don't think Verdasco stands a chance against him which means we are set up for a Federer-Karlovic quarterfinal. That will be very interesting to say the least.

He is an incredible server, may be the best I've ever seen... Plus, he can play some tennis (not like Ivasinovic).

Oh my...I'm so happy for Andy...Roddick, that is. He has worked so hard to get back to this point and have a shot at another GS title...I got a little emotional seeing him get choked up after the match....you could see how much it means to him. I think he will likely get stomped by Fed in the final, but you never know. Hopefully he at least puts up a good fight and makes it a worthwhile match. I don't know what it is about Murray, but I simply can't stand him...I've never liked him. Also, the crowd was annoying as hell today and acting like a bunch of teeny boppers at a Jonas Brothers concert or something. Maybe it was just because they were rooting against Roddick, but they just seemed to be acting quite rude and immature today.

As for the women's final, I won't be watching. I can't stand the Williams sisters and wish there was some way that they could both lose. Women's tennis has really gone downhill lately. All of the top players besides the Williams sisters and Sharapova maybe are extremely frail mentally. Safina getting rolled 0 and 1 in the semis??? Please.

Obviously I wanted Murray to win, but I'm happy for Roddick too. He's a great guy. I thought he served awesome. His groundstrokes were some of the best I've seen from him. He seems pretty strong mentally at the moment, playing a much more intelligent game and not just relying on brute force like he used to. I hope he plays to the same standard Sunday so that we have a competitive final. Considering he was playing a home grown player I thought the crowd were pretty fair myself on the whole, they gave him a huge round of applause at the end and Roddick seemed pretty appreciative of their response.

It's a shame that the only player who can beat Fed in a grand slam is injured. As hard as I was pulling for Andy I had no doubt that he would find a way to lose it in the end. He played a lot better than I expected but it was just a matter of time before Fed pulled it out. I cannot wait until Nadal gets back.

No shame in shedding a tear. I've always liked Andy got a little teary eyed myself seeing the disappointment on his face after the match. Golf and tennis always hit me the hardest emotionally...I think it is because you feel more emotionally attached to an individual than you do a team of players.

I can't believe Andy let the 2nd set slip away when he had 4 set points in the tiebreak, but hopefully Andy can take some sort of positive and keep playing the way he did in London. He is playing the best tennis I've seen him play and should be a factor at the US Open.

I was livid when Roddick blew that second set. I thought he had a shot up until that point but after that it was just a matter of time. He got my hopes back up in the 5th set but it was clear that Roddick was the first one to start to tire and Fed just continue to hit ace after ace.

BTW, I've heard people saying that this final was better than last year's...not even close. This year's final was pretty much a serving contest that had a ridiculous scoreline because of no 5th set tiebreak. Last year's final was a great tennis match in every way.

Also, in the 5th set with 15-40 on Roger's service he has a chance...

I have mixed feelings... I'm glad that Roger won, but I'm sad for Andy who was really, really, really close to win the Big One.
Federer wasn't that good, mainly because Andy played well too... But to be fair, I think that if Roger would have played like that against Rafa, it would have been a 3 sets win for Nadal...

I have to say Andy is a great and classy guy... His speech at the end of the game was awesome... He is not as gifted as Roger, but I like his warrior mentality... Bravo Andy... See you back soon in a Grand Slam final and hope you'll win it... You deserve it... You deserved it yesterday but a very few points made the difference...

Congrats to Roger anyway... He made history yesteday...

I still think Federer would have won even if Andy won that 2nd set.
I really hope Roddick wins Wimbledon one day though. He deserves it.
How many more Slams for Federer I wonder.
I would think at least a couple more.
Maybe as much as five even.
20 slams would be one heck of a record for anyone ever to beat.
I suppose it all depends on how soon Nadal recovers.
I predict Andy to win U.S Open. Which Andy, I'm not saying ;)

Yeah, may be Rodger would have won anyway, but I'm not so sure... Roddick was really good on his serve. He was better in the 1st, 2nd and 4th... They were close in the 3rd and Roger was better in the 2nd part of the 5th (after having to save some break points). IMo Andy had a great chance to win it but a very few points made the difference... This is where Roger is so great...
Was amazed me was the calm of the 2 players... Unbelievable

Yeah, I think Roger can make a huge record... It will be tough to beat... Even for Nadal... Nadal's style is more physical and his body suffers a lot because of that... I don't know if he will have a very long carreer, but who knows? Rafa in good shape is a beast... Roger has a lot of troubles against him but I don't see Rafa winning 20 grand slams (because of injuries)...

 ... yeah... Which Andy will win??? I was laughing during the semi opposing Andy to Andy --> "Come on Andy"... but Andy Who??? :D

I think A-Rod will have a good US Open... The guy deserves to win another grand slam...
A-Mur has a lot of talent... But I'd like to see him more agressive and not relying too much on his opponent's faults... He can take the game, he has the skills for that... Why doesn't he come more near the net? (Note that I think too many players are staying away from the net... Too bad because they could have many easy points after a good attack)...

I really liked the way A-Rod played at Wimbledon... Always attacking when he had a chance and coming to the net to finish points...

I don't think Nadal will ever beat his record either Frenchie, what I meant was, the number of Slams Federer wins depends on how soon and to what extent Nadal recovers from his present injuries. If Nadal's career is hindered, then I think the path is open for Rodger to go on to win as much as twenty slams.

Gasquet's game must have really fallen off. Murray didn't look great last night, just average, although the dude he was playing showed flashes of absolute brilliance but the McEnroe brothers said he has all-world, No. 1 talent, but doesn't care enough. And I could tell. I didn't get a chance to see Roddick, and of course Federer can't be ruled out of anything. Federer, Nadal, Murray, Roddick and Djokovic are probably the true contenders.

Yeah Gasquet is spraying alot of shots. He hasn't really found a great rhythm. His effort has also been lacking at times. But yes, I agree that the top 5 are the only players with any shot of winning this tournament. Andre Agassi used crystal meth while he was playing professional tennis, according to a new autobiography to be released next month.

The information was confirmed by the director of media relations at Knopf, a division of Random House which is publishing the book, according to a report in the New York Daily News. It was first publicized widely by Sports Illustrated writer Richard Deitsch in a Twitter post.

The Daily News said that the year was 1997.

"FYI: There's an off-the-charts book excerpt from Andre Agassi in the forthcoming SI: He admits to taking crystal meth during his career," Deitsch wrote Tuesday morning. The post was later deleted. The excerpt of the book is due out later this week in Sports Illustrated and People magazines.

"Those excerpts contain revelations about Andre's use of crystal meth when he was a tennis player," said Paul Bogaards of Knopf, according to the Daily News.

Agassi had won the Olympic gold medal in the 1996 Atlanta Games, but didn't win a major in 1997. His next major came at the 1999 French Open. He won the U.S. Open later that year and went on to win three more Australian Open titles before retiring in 2006. He won more than $30 million in his career, and eight major singles titles.

He is currently married to former Grand Slam champion Steffi Graf. They have two children.

The book, titled "Open: An Autobiography," is due out on Nov. 9.

I've always enjoyed watching tennis on the clay. Plus, Michael Chang was my tennis idol when I was a kid, and my favorite match ever was when he beat Lendl at Roland Garros (which until I just looked it up, my memory has it as the final. But the final was actually against Edberg). It was his only major. I liked the counter-punching of Agassi later, so the U.S. Open later became a favorite. He had some epic matches in Flushing.

I am a Murray fan now that Roddick is retired, but I'd like to see someone break through besides Federer/Djokovic/Murray too. Del Potro would be interesting, and he does have a Open title (five years ago now...). I like Monfils, but I don't think his game is good enough on hard court, love to watch him play though.

Maybe I can get back into women's tennis if I don't have to hear about the Williams sisters every two minutes. Can't stand either of them.

Monfils has an interesting matchup in round one. 17-year-old Jared Donaldson, American who earned a wild card spot.

I've slightly taken against Bouchard, not through her own fault, but media building her up as the next Sharapova which is annoying!

I quite like Simona Halep's style of play. She was good in the French, but a bit disappointing in the latter stages of Wimbledon.

What's the name of that tall young American who won Eastbourne but had to pull out of Wimbledon half way through due to injury? If she's playing she might do well....?

Can I ask why the Aussie is your fave Abe?
The womens is so open. I'd like to see Li Na win another, she's so fun.

The Aussie seems the most relaxed to me I guess. I'm not really sure, but the atmosphere seems really cool. It comes on about midnight here, and i'm a night owl so I find it a good time to watch. Not 100% sure why but I love everything about it. If I got the chance to go to any one major, it'd be the Aussie.

Li Na could do stand up comedy. A very good sport :D

I watched 5 minutes of the sharapova/wosniaki game - after that i was spent and seen no need to watch anymore

I prefer ESPN's coverage to CBS or NBC. That might also be a factor as to why I prefer the Aussie Open to any other, because they cover the game the whole tournament.

I have watched two games and I love Kei Nishikori's game. Counter-puncher with a backhand return reminiscent of Agassi at his best. I've never seen Nishikori before. Could be a new favorite.

Dimitrov and Monfils tomorrow. Go Monfils!

That Nishikori match Monday was something else. I didn't watch his comeback five-setter today. But, yeah, two brilliant sets that had just about everything. Set up for late night epicness at the Open.

Andy has hit some monster winners thus far. That was a crazy forehand to get to 1-1 in the third.

Sad he's out, but no shame in his perfomance.
In fact it's been a slam of taking steps in the right direction, beating a top tenner for the first time since winning Wimbledon and playing pretty awesome tennis v the Joker at times from what I heard. I was asleep for most of the match and only caught the latter part of the fourth set.

Federer v Monfils is a tasty prospect.

I love Monfils to death, but he does not seem to have the killer instinct, dedication, passion that Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic have. He is fun and original and refreshing, but he's so damn talented that he should really be competing in quarters and semis MUCH more often. Del Potro's achilles heel is injuries, but Monfils' is himself. Fun, original, and refreshing do not make a champion.

A 3 1/4 hour, five-setter for Nishikori in the opening round with a possible calf injury to boot. That's a problem.

Men's tennis doesn't move the needle in the U.S. It sucks for those of us who'd rather watch Murray and Nadal than the Williams sisters, but it's a fact of life at this point.

This is why ESPN3 comes in handy. Every major match in its entirety.

I get them showing live coverage of the Williams sisters playing over a top men's match, but showing a practice session is just a bit much IMO. And just having their talking heads on the air for 30 minutes while there is live play going on makes even less sense.

Nadal was playing a qualifier from Argentina and ended up sweeping him. I'm sure they have numbers showing talking about the Williams sisters gets more ratings than seeing that. They showed all of his first round match because he drew an up and coming Croat on centre court.
