View Full Version : Car - 1996 Lincoln Continental
I have an opportunity to buy a 96 Lincoln Cont for $2500 - 160k miles - pristine condition - it was orig sticker price of $45k - Im driving it for a few days and I have a friend who is the shop manager at a ford dealership and he is going to change the oil and give it a once over - it has all the whistles and bells including retractable sun/moon roof (whats the difference  )
But what do you all think - anyone with personal experience
Anyone whos a gear head that could give me some advice
PS - At the moment im driving a 97 Pontiac Bonneville with 175k miles and a leaking radiator, a broken passenger window and the high setting on the heat/air doesnt work
My pontiac is paid for but this one will be too - no payments and my insuance only goes up $100 a year

160 K is a lot of miles. But $2500 is pretty cheap.
Do you have much of a commute daily?

No its 12 miles one way to job # 1 and then about 2 1/2 miles to job #2
Although about every other week I drive down to the lake to see my parents (its 90 miles one way)

Well, it's hard to go wrong on a $2500 car. It probably doesn't get the best mileage, though.

I drive a 2001 Continental.
Have your buddy check the air ride suspension. Those used to have problems.
Sweet ride though. Get used to people thinking you are 80 years old.

if 45k was the mileage and NOT the sticker price
Do a kelly blue book on it.. i think its KBB.com
see what its worth.... it sounds like a decent buy as long as its in condition... Suspension, brakes, rotors, shocks and struts shuld all b checked out

I did and im getting it for cheaper than the private sale price and way cheaper than the retail value (so if I wreck it my ins is gonna pay me way more than I paid for it :D )
I know 165K is a lot of miles but my current car is one year younger and has almost 10K more miles on it - also needs a new radiator
And yes - the air ride suspension thing is one of the cons ive heard from everyone about this car - but I heard you can change it to reg. suspension if they go out, rides not as smooth but the savings is - plus I know several people who work on cars - so parts is the main expense for me - and from what Ive been told they made a lot, and a lot of lincolns have interchangeable parts - so hopefully I could get junk yard parts if something bad happens
One more bad thing I heard was about the tranny - they seem to give out right about now - and that would be a pretty penny no matter who you know

There would be another $2000
If its been well taken care of...mileage shouldn't make that much of
a difference...I usually never have a car that has over 70,000 miles
on it.
My father in law gave my son his 92 Jeep Cherokee when he turned 16
and it had over 250,000 miles on it.It drove good but leaked oil bad.I
wouldn't let him park it in the driveway til we got a new motor put in it.
Good Luck tho...I am always leary tho of cars that have a ton of miles on them
but thats just me.

I bought mine from my father in laws buddy (who owns the local Caddy dealership). 47k miles on it, mint condition. Drove it for 8 days. On the ninth day, the tranny blew. The dealer was not obligated to fix the car, but they did anyway, on their dime. Bill was $2450.
If the tranny still has not gone out, it is about to in my opinion.

The mileage is not a concern at all it fit was highway driving, a lot less wear and tear on the rest of the car Brakes, shocks, steering engine and tranny than around the town stuff. 3
Where is the car from was it in cold country that used alot of salt on the roads.. also you can run one of those car history reports to check and see what damage has been done to it and well as repairs.. also ask for repair receipts if you can get them.
Lets get back on topic please..
The problem cars start to run in to at that high of mileage are things like spun crank bearings, bad valve seals (the car would smoke blue on the start if the valve seals were bad), and other small things. Chances are if the car has that many miles on it the valve seals have already been replaced and the engine was broken in properly (not breaking an engine in properly will cause the crank bearings to not seat properly and they'll spin in less than 100k miles). Depending on what engine is in the car (probably either a 302 cubic inch pushrod motor [5.0] or a 281 cubic inch dual overhead cam [4.6]), you could probably get another 20-40k miles out of it. What you need to do is take the car to a mechanic and have him do a compression check to make sure all of the cylinders still have proper compression. If not, chances are that either a piston is shot or the rings are cracked. Check the radiator to make sure there isn't any brown flakes floating around in there. If there are, that means either the radiator is corroded and needs replaced or someone ran pure water in the engine and the waterjackets inside the engine are corroded. Another way you can check to see if the inside of the block is corroded is if there are whitish-blue calcium deposits around the freeze plugs. Unfortunately, if it's a 4.6, you won't be able to see the freeze plugs on the front of the engine because the timing chain cover covers them.
If you have any other questions, let me know. Small-block Ford engines are my forte.

A friend of a friend is a shop manager at a ford dealership - they checked it all out and changed the oil - even checked those airbag shock do-hickeys and they said they were in great shape - probably been replaced and not the originals - when you pop the hood its immaculate as is the interior and exterior - the good thing is im also buying it from a friend of a friend (all of them friends for 20+ years) so im thinking i'll be ok
But then again it is me  I'll let you know when something ****s up ;) you can come to my rescue and fix it for me :eyebrows:

I would still take it somewhere to have a compression check done. It's very important that all of the cylinders have retained the proper compression. If not, the car will run like ****.
I probably wouldn't be able to come to your rescue, but I'd probably be able to walk you through almost anything.

Great engine. I had one in my 2003 Mach1. My friend Gordon got 175k out of his 4v 4.6 that was in his 1996 Cobra before he finally cracked a piston.

I'm on the edge of my seat here...
I think the problem with OB's car is it is a 96. But, im on the edge of my seat as well.
The freakin air bags went out - almost two weeks ago - got the kit to change it to a non air ride (reg. struts) $600 for the kit (it was $650 per air bag to replace) someone is gonna do the work for about $200 - have had to share my daughter car for going on 2 weeks - driving me insane
I've had four Mustangs that were older than '96 and only had bad problems with one, but it was because the kid I bought it from ran the car without a thermostat and that eventually cracked #8 cylinder straight through the water jacket and I HAD to build a better, stronger, faster motor. :)

You probably could have isolated and fixed the problem with the air ride suspension cheaper than buy the shock/strut/spring kit.

Year of car?
Mine is a 97 has 180k on it - was told by two separate people that the bags in front had been replaced at least once
Also - getting it towed will cut the longevity in half, IMHO - i had mine towed right before this happened and im convinced that the towing company did not shut off my air ride system before putting it up on the bed of the truck and clamping it down
Always make sure the air ride is off before ever lifting the car for any reason
