View Full Version : What is an obscene post?

What is an obscene post? Is it someone's personal opinion. Is it something where you have **** ***** ******* all over the page cause it is obscene. Is it full of dirty words. When a person reports an obscene posts, what does that mean. How can it be obscene if none of the words are **** *** ***** *** out. The post I'm referring to contained no foul words, it was nothing really bad in my opinion. I guess I didn't know that masturbation was viewed as being obscene.

Why can't people that run around here all offended leave you a PM when they think you have left an obscene post.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not bitching, I'm just curious.

How could we be obscene when all of the fun words are **** out? Masturbation is not obscene if you're just talking about it alone by itself, but if you're running around telling people you just jerked it to some free online porn then that's a tad obscene.

No, just told someone they should practice..(MB) to extend it. It was an article from Mens Health. No big deal...Don't want to get into the details, it's obscene.

ob·scene

1. offensive to morality or decency; indecent; depraved: obscene language.
2. causing uncontrolled sexual desire.
3. abominable; disgusting; repulsive.

Personally, I think talk about masterbation doesn't have any place on a sports message board. It is lewd and indecent. And, honestly, I don't know why you would even want to talk about it on a sports message board.

See this is the problem that I often see. Certain people see things one way...others see it another way. Who is right? We have to choose between one or the other. Either way someone will be unhappy and feel set upon...like you obviously do.

SR

Funny, most 'unofficial' sports message boards I've come across are all fairly lewd and indecent.

If we can't have some verbal freedoms here, we might as well all be posting at Broncomania. After all, we started this site to avoid that one. At least at Broncomania I can say Kung **.

Thats why there are separate forums set up within this site. Fans can only say so much about one team, or even one sport.

If its in a lounge are then I think it is PG-13 at the minimum. And who knows more than 13 year olds about masturbation? Besides MB, I cannot think of anyone.

I'm far from upset. BTW, this wasn't in the sports forum. This isn't a football board in this particular section. Just letting you know. I looked and couldn't find any football threads in that particualar area I was referring to, sorry. BTW, you can find sex and masturbation articles in bookstores and grocery stores all throughout the world. Again, just letting you know.

I know what a lot of sites allow. That is also the reason that I am here and not there. ;)

SR. I don't know about you, but it wasn't because I couldn't talk about lewd things or swear or loss "freedoms" that I left BM. I also don't think that was why this site was created.

Haha. That is funny that that is filtered.

I was meaning the board as a whole...not a sub-forum. I also realize what you can find in books/magazines throughout the world. Does it really justify anything though?

Believe me, being in a country that doesn't allow porn for four months will make one's mind come up with some of the damnedest things.

Been there, done that.

I, as a regular poster here not a mod, don't see the reason to be lewd. I think that it is disrespectful towards other people...even if it is humorous. That is just my personal opinion but that doesn't influence my mod decisions though. Is it really that important to be able to talk about masturbation or sexual positions/situations?

Honestly though, as mods, we have to make the decision what is obscene. It is certainly subjective and often falls under personal opinion. If the people are not happy with where the current policy is then start a poll and let's see what the community has to say.

As LDB said, the line has to be drawn somewhere. And no matter where it is
drawn, some people will be unhappy, on both sides of the line. Nonetheless,
this board has loosened up considerably on what is allowable.

But to those who think it would be better for them on another message board,
then go there. That's pretty simple, isn't it? And I say that without apology.

I don't agree with everything that exists on this message board. But it is the
best one going, IMO, so I'm not going to whine and moan because I know I
would not find the perfect board anywhere out there.

Well, I would just like to state that if the thread is about "What MB Should do Tonight," and the person doesn't expect a few off-color remarks, then they are kidding themselves.

Let's use some common sense, here. If it's in the "What's On Your Mind" forum on a Friday night with a poll about what I'm going to do tonight, it's going to have a few off-color, but not derogatory, or exceptionally lewd, comments. If you are easily offended, and want this to be a "football forum," then why are you in there reading that? Seriously? I guess it all comes down to the "You can't legislate common sense."

Anti-American rhetoric is not forbidden by the COC. Personal attacks are. Avoid the personal remarks and you probably won't be reported. And even if you are, the mods won't do anything if there isn't a violation.

Who interprets what is and is not a personal attack?

When Frenchie said that we will fail at successfully building a government in Iraq, I took that as a personal attack...

What is and is not a personal attack can only be interpreted by the person who feels attacked. However, that does not mean that every time someone gets remotely offended that the run to the tit...

Not quite.

The mods make the final call. But personal attacks are fairly cut and dry.

Posting about a specific poster is a personal attack. Example...you are a POS. You are a moron. LDB is too stupid to see the point.

Posting your opinion about a situation to include public people is not an attack. Example...Mike Shanahan is a moron. The President is a moron.

Saying the US will fail in Iraq is a personal opinion...not an attack on anyone.

I'm not chastising you, and it isn't an ultimatum. I'm just saying that if you or
anyone thinks it is better elsewhere, then what are you doing here? I wouldn't
be here if I felt that way. That's all.

And despite your apparently resentful allusion, I would say that either as a

I use the <ENTER> key. It comes from writing sales copy. They have found
that people find it more pleasant and easier reading if the lines are no more
than 72 characters long. I don't know how long these are, though. I have
never counted them. I use the borders in the text box for guidance.

You say I said them; I say I did not. I say that because I do not believe I
would. You might have interpreted it one way, while I meant it another. I
don't know. And I will never know until and unless I see precisely what I said.
I am not provided the opportunity to dispute it, explain it, or apologize and
retract it, whatever would be appropriate.

A vague, undocumented accusation is best left unsaid. As I had in my sig for
some time: "It is best to think twice before saying nothing."

term obscene is applied to written, verbal, or visual works or conduct that treat sex in an objectionable or lewd or lascivious manner.

I guess it may come down to a matter of maturity deciding what is lewd or obscene. Otherwise, if everything is objectionable and questionable, are we all really posting on a Message Board? This is what I'm talking about. How in the world can you expect mods or tned to decifer who you are as a poster and your intentions, when you contradict yourself in this manner....repeatedly so.

Humor I have lots of it, and many friends on this board who would agree with me on that, but I don't feel a lot of toleration for a grown man not to understand how to define obscene. Threads like this are simply for attention, and I'm here to say I don't agree with your take on this board, I don't agree that you incite more arguments between long-time posters/friends, and I don't agree that you care about this board in any way, shape, or form.

Good question. What the mods are using right now, becauase we don't have any clear definition, is network TV. If it isn't allowed on primetmied network TV (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX 7-10 pm central) than it isn't allowed here.

I am not saying that should be the final word, but that "is" the interpretation guideline they are supposed to be using now because it is so hard to define 'obscene'.

Because this, like many of our rules, were pretty vague and put together in a rush when we started the board, we have been reviewing them. We attempted to start that with the general rules discussion thread, but that wandered all over the place, which is why we broke off the profanity/acronym discussion into it's own discussion and then modified the rules based on that.

Now, I think there are a few other discussions that need to take place, and I planeed/plan to start a couple of them today. I won't pre-empt them now. l haven't read this thread yet, but will do so now, but wanted to explain what our mods are currently using as a guideline.

I will say that the approachability of a person does not weigh into it. Most of the time it is more expedient for me to just make the modification and move on. I don't mind doing that. I prefer not to delete an entire post if I can help it. Eh...in any case, I usually just edit the post or delete it if necessary and don't get upset about it. If I notice that it is becoming a trend with a certain poster I will send a PM.

Now, I will usually send a PM for a personal attack, harrassment, or baiting posts.

I think the person should be notified if their post was deleted. And told why it was deleted. If this thread hadn't been started, I may never have even noticed that that conversation was gone, and that that conversation is apparently not appropriate. Ok, here's a few things for people to think about:

Thats why there are separate forums set up within this site. Fans can only say so much about one team, or even one sport.

If its in a lounge are then I think it is PG-13 at the minimum. And who knows more than 13 year olds about masturbation? Besides MB, I cannot think of anyone.

Actually, that isn't why there are multiple forums. I think on broncosfreak, the lounge was more of a wide open, anything goes forum, but that wasn't the case on ABF (mania) where most of us came from, or how the "whats on you mind -- lounge) has been used for here.

Kind of like my answer above to Clay, here the rules apply the same to all. Also, when by football board, he was referring to the entire message board, Broncosforums, which is a football community. The rules have been applied the same to all forums even to the point that duck/smack has been modded as tightly as Broncos talk or any other forum. there have been some requests to allow more/less in certain forums, and that might change in the future. For instance, many feel that things that are deleted as 'personal attacks' should be allowed as 'fun smack' in the duck/smack forum.

See more about this in a Town Hall Discussion that will be started in the next hour or so, and then another that will be put up soon.

You might be right, but currently the rules don't support the concept that things in a "what should MB do tonight" thread should be more anything goes than in a 'religious' or 'broncos talk' thread. It might be that should change, but until it does, the mods are expected to apply the same rules to every forum, every thread.

When you go into a thread titled: Scientolgoy.. you expect religious wars but not Dr. Ruth!

I agree that there could be a thread that says.... anything goes *can be sexually explicit those with weak stomachs and strong morals stay out*

Then those that want to be carefree and moon the world can and there would be no reason to report anyone in a thread that warned you first!

See more about this in Town Hall Discussion that will be started in the next hour or so, baed on an on and off discussion the advisory board was having for a few weeks.

not demanding/complaining that tned changes everything to fit their personal needs. ;)[/B]

Jody, I appreciate the sentiment, but I have been dealing with some form of those demands for our four months now. Whether it be around what should or should not be allowed in pics/languages, whether or not to have a CP type system, and many other topics. While a lot of posters have just sat back and had fun, a vocal minority have been pushing hard for things they like or don't like since day one.

However, I think that is what should happen, I just would prefer the silent majority join into Town Hall discussions so we can evolve the board to represent what the community at large wants. Since over time the community will change, then so should the message board rules.

At least it's in the proper forum. Isn't this what this forum is for? True.

No, see my above comments. The broncosforums.com "what's on your mind" is not the anything goes that it seems the Broncosfreak's lounge was, so adding the (aka, the lounge) to the title might have confused things, and I will take responsibility for that. It was intended to point out where the general chit chat area was, since our forum titles are a bit cryptic.

Yes, it felt good. When the little snitch button went in and it sent, I almost exploded. I undestand why they do it now.....

FWIW, we have previously told people to hit the report button if something breaks the rules, since the mods can't see all, and it's better to get the mods involved to edit a post that breaks the rules (such as a personal attack) rather than having posters feel the need to start back and forth arguments/flame wars.

I think the reported post button is used here more than on the freak, but it comes from people saying, "how come you allow so and so, to do such and such, and we responded that we can't see everything, if someone breaks a rule, that is what the report button is for".

LOL, I know, but that's where you got that. It's kind of funny.

Yesterday I was talking about wanting to go Kung Fu on someone and was astonished to see I couldn't say Kung Fu with out the Fu in Kung Fu being **. I just like the little stars. It brings a bit extra to the table. ****. ****. *****.

Sweet! I can say Kung Fu now! You da man!

 @ people snitching. Yea I've always hated snitches. Whether it was in school or on a message board. Some people just like to complain and find a reason to whine about something. I dont got a problem with anything. You can cuss me out in a post if you want and I wouldn't care. :elefant: Oh well. Masterbation isn't offensive to me. Maybe we should filter it out?

Snitch. That is a term intended to intimidate people from helping to maintain
control in a society. I guess some people think it is better for someone to just
grin and take any kind of beating their attackers want to dole out. That poses
quite an advantage for the attackers.

I don't mind snitching if it protects someone who needs protecting. I've done
it before, and I'll do it again.

Must be a generational thing. :coffee:

"Bad things happen to those who snitch." I heard that a lot from inmates
when I worked in the prison system. I heard a lot about snitching from
students when I was a high school teacher.

I just have never heard it much from my peers: you know, adults. :noidea:

Don't get me wrong: I don't have much use for tattletales who can't mind
their own business in things that otherwise would be relatively unconsequential.
But if something needs to be reported, then by all means it should be reported.

Are you a snitcher, SR? Are you the one that turned in 9798?

*taps toes impatiently* Come clean now. :D

Not at all, we are old friends here, but 'just checking'.
The mood he's been in lately on this board is frightening. :D
Someone's got to give him a hard time outside of fighter pilots.;)

Me? Snitch? Rebel? What are all of these things you speak of?

I'm just getting testy. Certain people here are starting to irritate the bageezus out of me. It's all good though. One month from today I'll be back in Texas with my son and getting wrecked after he goes to bed.

We're all still figuring out how to run a message board. From admining to modding, we have bee learning on the job.

The big thing none of us should lose site of is that this should be an enjoyable place to spend. If everyone focus on having fun, but still respecting differences, I think in time everything else will work itselft out.
