ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Quarterback Kyle Orton isn't practicing as the Denver Broncos install their game plan for Sunday's AFC West showdown with the San Diego Chargers. Backup Chris Simms took the snaps at practice Wednesday because of Orton's bum ankle.

Orton is holding out hope that he will start Sunday. He was knocked out of the Broncos' 27-17 loss at Washington last Sunday with a sprained left ankle and replaced by a rusty Simms.

Simms is the quarterback best known for having his spleen removed after taking a beating during a loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 24, 2006, when he played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Simms hasn't started a game since that day.

Ravage!!!

Damn.. 3 seasons and 9 games. Thats a long time to be out of the line of fire.

This article is a bit misleading...everything I have read today says Orton wasn't on the field for the opening of practice that is open to the media...but no one can confirm if he came out and practiced later (which would not surprise me). I wonder if they can confirm that he didn't participate at all.

Orton not on field to start practice
November, 18, 2009 Nov 18 4:45PM ET

Denver quarterback Kyle Orton was not on the field during the portion of the practice that was open to the media Wednesday, according to the Denver Post.

It is conceivable that Orton could hit the field after the media departed. We will update his status late Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, Orton said he will try to play in a pivotal game against San Diego on Sunday. The winner of the game in Denver will take sole possession of first place in the AFC West.

Orton was injured in the first half of Sunday’s loss at Washington. Orton was playing well when he was injured. Backup this Simms did not play well after taking over for Orton in the second half when Washington took control of the game.

Phil was just on Sirius and said Chris did indeed take every snap in practice yesterday. I just have a bad feeling in my gut that we get our asses kicked with Chris at QB, but I will be hoping he comes prepared and plays well.

That was a freind test. Had to do it. Some of these fans are like terminators. Hard to detect.

I was happy when we signed Simms to be the back up but was disappointed in his play last week. Hopefully a week of preperation will have him ready because we need to beat the Bolts. I want to see Merriman cry about a lack of respect again after the game........

Maybe this was the plan all along. We only brought in the Big Name Orton to sell jersey's.

The real plan was Simms, and Hillis all Along.

:savingforfuturereference:

I haven't really seen very many fans predicting that Simms would play poorly with a week's worth of practice taking all the snaps. Mainly just a bunch pointing out that Simms played a lot worse than Orton did in the same game against the same defense. This being exaggerated quite a bit because several prognosticators were calling for Simms to be promoted to starter.

We'll see how he does. At this point it looks like to me that he will be starting for us. I sincerely, sincerely, really truthfully, hope that you and Claymore are not the one's lining up for a serving of crow.

I am willing to bet that simms plays so well that people say orton who?

We really will be fine. Goldenrod is fleet in the foot, golden in the bush, hard in the rod, and fires his ball fast and hard.

no- that is not a sexual reference to anything either. You twisted sobs out there. You know who you are Tned.

Let's not make this thread about individual posters/members.

I wonder if brandy got any reps?

If so, those are what we in the business like to call "waisted reps".
