Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton said today he is optimistic he will be ready to play in Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers.
"That's the goal," Orton said during his weekly news conference. "I'm going to do everything that I can to be on the field Sunday. Myself, just like everybody else, we're excited to move on and play San Diego in this big game for the AFC West."
Orton suffered an injury to his left ankle Sunday in a 24-17 loss at Washington. The team has not disclosed the extent of the injury, but Orton said he would try to practice this afternoon.
"It's going to be a day-to-day deal," he said. "I haven't done much on it as of yet, so we'll go out there and see what we can do. I'm not positive if I can go today or not."
Back-up Chris Simms, who completed only 3-of-13 passes in the second half against the Redskins, will take the majority of the practice reps if Orton is unable to participate.
"I'm going to prepare like I'm playing (and) I'm sure he's going to prepare like he's playing, and we'll communicate through the entire week and make sure whoever is playing will do a good job," Orton said.
