Mike Bell, above, has coach Mike Shanahan's confidence. (Post file)The Broncos realize Mike Bell is not thrilled with the fact he has permanently moved to fullback.

But they believe he can be a standout at the position.

"I think Mike can be a Pro Bowl fullback," Broncos coach Mike Shana- han said. "I really do. He can be a special player there."

The Broncos moved Bell from tailback to fullback last week. He is competing with Cecil Sapp to start at the position.

"I'm just sucking it up and trying to make the best of it," Bell said. "Now, it's my job to win the fullback job."

The Broncos have not heard from any teams wanting to trade for Bell, which is fine by them. They want to keep him.

"Mike is a quality player," Shanahan said. "I think he'll do very well at fullback."

Hamilton out two weeks

Shanahan said left guard Ben Hamilton has been given medical orders to rest for two weeks as he recovers from the lingering effects of a concussion that kept him out of the preseason. Shanahan said Hamilton will be re-evaluated after the two-week period.

Hamilton went to Pittsburgh last week to see a concussion specialist after he continued to have dizziness.

Chris Myers, who worked with the first unit all preseason, has replaced Hamilton in the lineup.

Paymah recovering

Backup cornerback Karl Paymah said he could play at Buffalo on Sunday if needed, but he could also be held out another week as a precaution from a concussion he suffered in the Broncos' preseason finale Thursday against the Arizona Cardinals.

Paymah was knocked unconscious while making a tackle. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and spent the night at a hospital.

"It was scary," Paymah said. "But I'm feeling fine now."

Meanwhile, tight end Stephen Alexander was held out of practice because of a lower leg bruise but is expected to be ready to play Sunday.

Footnotes

To make room for Simeon Rice, the Broncos will have to trim a player from the roster. ... Receiver Javon Walker said it is reasonable to think he could gain 1,500-1,600 receiving yards this season. ... Linebacker Cameron Vaughn signed with Arizona's practice squad, and offensive tackle Manny Akah signed with Kansas City's practice squad. The Broncos cut both players Saturday. The Broncos put a waiver claim on offensive tackle Rashad Butler, but he was awarded to Houston because the Texans had a worse record and better claiming priority. Butler was cut by Carolina on Sunday. ... The Broncos expect rookie offensive lineman Ryan Harris to be ready to play in about three weeks. He had minor back surgery Aug. 15. ... Former Broncos punter Paul Ernster has a workout today in Cleveland. ... Quarterback Patrick Ramsey switched from No. 8 to No. 11, and offensive lineman Chris Kuper switched from No. 77 to No. 73.

No it didn't really jump out at me and its not because he went undrafted. I not usually one to get overly excited about trades one way or the other.

Someone should remind him that it was our fullback that scored two touchdowns for us in Superbowl XXXIII. It seems that our fullbacks over the years have always come up with huge plays just when you are starting to forget that they are on the field.

yeah but i think its because they rarely get the ball:tsk:

i dont know let mikey pack on a few more pounds then well see, hes not a small guys by anymeans this year (i thought he was small last year oh well) 6ft 230lbs he could be decent, i just hope he can block a little better than last year

i remember last year, i think it was anyways that we were running it down some team all day, and then either sapp or johnson came in and took a coulple handoffs for like 30 yards or something

lets hope for the best

At 6'0" tall he should carry about 20-25 extra pounds.

I said in another thread that if I saw Mike Bell at fullback I would vomit continuously untill the end of the season. It looks like I better be preparing some sickness bags then.

:coffee:

He cannot block at all! Unless he has made some MAJOR improvements from last year then we are going to have problems. The Fullback position plays a bigger role than most might think, an extra blocker can be the difference between a 50 yard TD pass and a sack and fumble returned for a touchdown or a block from your Fullback could open up a 50 yard TD run.

The lastest depth chart has him as the number two fullback behind Sapp. So he probably wont see a lot action.

Thank Shanny. ;)

Let's hope Cecil Sapp stays healthy so that Mike Bell never has to come on the field and attempt to make a block.

Mike is in my opinion a better runningback and receiver so maybe he can be utilized in various situations that would call for him using those skills.

I guessing you are basing his inability to block what happened last season? That is last year and Bell seems like the kind of guy who dedicated to getting better.

I agree completely with this post TXB. I also think that it's an important move for the Broncos incase of injury to the RB position. The Broncos for the last several years have a policy of keeping 3 RB's on the roster, but declaring one RB inactive for every game (I believe every team has to declare... what is it... I think 3 players inactive for every game). Obviously Shanahan thinks Bell can help as an FB, and as the second FB, he won't see a ton of time except when Sapp isn't fresh anymore. At FB he wil lbring weapons to the running and catching game not normally there IMO.

To boot, because Hall will likely be named inactive every game unless he is needed on ST (one of the reasons he was retained), if injuries hurt Travis Henry, it makes sense to use Bell as an RB in a RBBC with Young to keep both fresh IMO. It's a two fold thing IMO. Keep him as a weapon at FB, and also leave it open for him to be utilized as an RB incase the one RB should go down....

I don't know about other coaches but I know Shanahan values highly versatility in players. If you can play more than one position as back up the better your chances on the game day roster of 45.

I also think you're right on the mark about why Bell is being kept which goes back to his versatility.
